To me… DSE is far more bothersome than blooming. The new LED TVs have gotten so good at minimizing blooming that it is not all that noticeable in most scenarios. However, DSE varies unit by unit and is a total crapshoot. Unfortunately, some manufacturers don’t even see this as an issue even on their high end models.

Man TV reviews are so good and annoying because when you learn TV defects you can't see it. I can't stop looking for blooming , I get irritated by panels with grey blacks or no local dimming in non OLED tvs. Just wish my bank account could match my ideal TV choice 😂😂. Now dirty screen effect 😂

Maybe some additional information on what causes the DSE. There are three things that make DSE: 1. Uneven backlight distribution 2. Uneven pressure on/in the panel itself 3. Uneven space distribution between the RGB layer and difusser from the backlight - The first one can be solved by replacing the backlight system, the uneven bright LED's are causing different light distribution and therefore causing DSE - The second one is solvable if the pressure lays on the panel itself, that's why some people suggest to "loosen up" the back of the TV. If the pressure lays in the panel itself than it's a manufacturing failure and can't be solved. - The third one is tricky. It's caused by either touching the RGB layer and backlight difusser or the surface of the difusser is not even. If the layers touch each other you get lighter white spots but if they don't and the difusser is uneven you can get dark spots. The RGB layer and the difusser have to have a gap between them and the defusser also has to be as even as possible so replacing the difusser solves the problem for the most time.

I lost the panel lottery on a TCL I ended up returning. It was such a hassle to box everything back up that I decided to take a different route altogether. For Christmas I got my son a Hisense U8G and lost again; it was thru Amazon. I decided to give it another shot locally since the TV itself was very good, and got one that was almost perfect. Very happy overall. I do believe that manufacturers ship units with DSE because not enough people notice it or care about DSE. I am positive that if they had enough returns, they would not sell them in the first place; it costs a lot of money to process a customer return item.

Thanks Caleb. I can’t say I wasn’t warned. NOW I know I should’ve skipped this video. But it’s early on a Saturday morning, so I decided to played your “can you see the dirty screen” game. The first few were not very obvious. Then I noticed a spot on one of a colored panels! Great, I think. I‘ve learned something important, I think. I’m going to be ready to check out the screen on a new TV I hope to buy later this year! I think. For several fleeting moments, I’m very proud of myself! The next color flashed on screen and the “pinkish” mark was still there. Hummm. A the third test panel arrived, and the very light, pinkish hue is still there. WHAT! Calm down. I’ll just clean the screen and it will disappear. Nope. I’ll never look at this iPad mini the same way ever again. The “pink splash” will always be on the screen. Right now, it’s on the keyboard while I type. It’s on and between the top corners of the h and j keys as I type this note. It hasn’t bleed on the “u” key, yet. But I’m sure I’ll know the moment it does, because I seriously don’t think I’ll ever “unsee” this again! I swear it wasn’t there yesterday, or earlier today when I watched subwoofer reviews on KZread. I’m resigning myself to months or years of a growing pinkish hue splash, emanating from my iPad mini. 🤦‍♂️. I suppose my only real hope is Apple announcing an unanticipated upgraded iPad mini (@ a super low price) during next week’s Apple Spring event. Right. Pigs will fly first. Caleb, can you do a video of how to put toothpaste back into the tube? Yea, I know. That’s not gonna happen either.

Could a careful scan of the screen be used by software to adjust brightness levels to cancel out the DSE pattern? That might be something useful to offer in firmware or to implement in the factory where they have the ability to perfectly capture a scan of the screen's output.

I think that would be hard to determine without a full almost, camera looking at the screen. Like a calibration. To lower or raise some leds within a picture, would require tone mapping and other algorithms to even out the tones. As the led may still draw the same power so no way for the tv know which ones are affected

  • @fleckx

I thought of this same solution. You use an app to take a really good photo of the TV and the TV processes the photo and adjusts the brightness in accordance with the results of the picture. It could happen but it's probably too much work for them to bother.

Bought a Sharp 60" TV and became aware of this issue the very first day, after a couple of days I was certain it's the TV (and not me). Following advice on one site (which described this problem as clouding), I did manage to gently and I mean gently massage the screen with a very soft cloth to even it out. As you say, I couldn't un-see it, but also realized there was vertical banding. Over the next few days the back light started clumping in other areas. So I returned the TV. In doing research to find a TV that was less likely to exhibit this problem, the Sony X90J came highly recommended. I did more research on this TV and that's how I found your channel, I watched all the videos you made for this TV (and subscribed). I came away confident that the Sony was a good buy, and I am very happy with it. It it does have DSE, I haven't seen it yet (had the TV for a month) so I think I got a good panel. Thanks for your channel and keep up the good work.

Just tried the test images on my Sony 77A80J, and it looks quite good. Not perfect mind you, but nevertheless quite good. That being said, many of us who regularly view these expensive large display panel televisions don’t have perfect vision anyway. For example, I have myopia and astigmatism, corrected with lenses, but still have significant issues with vitreous floaters… which can appear like “migrating dirty screen effect” at times! I guess my point is that nothing is perfect… And even if the screen were absolutely perfect, our eyes may not be capable of perceiving that perfection. As my dear old dad used to say, “it would look good to a blind man“.

It's on my 55 inch 2019 TCL 6-series Roku tv. I would call it moderate/acceptable DSE. When watching a movie I rarely notice it, maybe for a brief scene or two (camera pans across an overcast sky for example), or not at all just as likely. Fortunately I don't watch hockey or close ups of golf greens. I knew about this before I bought my TCL and thought a fair tradeoff for the great price and overall quality of the image. After over two years still very pleased with the purchase.

I remember being blown away by my plasma when I set it up. Well….I don’t like the picture on the Sony oled I bought. Even after adjusting the settings the display is just too dim. It looks horrible to my eyes. It’s going back to the store. Now researching mini led’s I come upon this issue. My LG 48 inch 1080P 120hz LED TV from 2012 has it on the right side when it was all gray but I have a small stain now in the bottom corner that only can be seen in light colors. If theres black bars from a Movie its gone so it doesn't bother me that much since this TV is pretty old and I did paid $700 back then and I should of return it because there was a purple banding on the right side since the beginning but never can notice it in dark movies,

I made this test in my moto g8 power LCD and it has DSE at the bottom (seen in all displayed colors, but more in grey tones). It's really annoying, but I use dark theme most of the time, and since its contrast ratio is excellent for an IPS, 1500:1, blacks are solid and makes this issue disappear.

Also my DSE was only noticeable when in horizontal panning shots of mostly same tone backgrounds like snow scenes or desert scenes. My Hisense did not have any DSE with static single tone backgrounds. So your test pattern static color backgrounds would not reveal the kind of DSE a lot of TVs have.

Problems due to age can be the LEDs going bad. This is repairable, though substantial. Symptoms include dark areas all the time, also they can go purple or lose lenses, looking like there's a light inside. NON-backlight problems include LCD "the glass" aging which might look dark and bruised in areas only on dark scenes.

I noticed some severe DSE (horizontal banding) on my 55" Hisense U7QF (H8G equivalent panel I believe). I tried to exchange it within a week of purchase, but the store I bought it wouldn't budge. So I'm stuck with it now. I don't see it as much in regular content, but since buying an Xbox I notice it a lot on the Xbox menus. It's also very apparent in vertical panning shots. The TV is really bright for its price class though, so HDR generally looks great, so for the price I guess I can't have everything.

We just purchased a 55” Sony X89J (UK equivalent to the X85J) and it’s got DSE all along the top and bottom edges as well as vignetting in all 4 corners. The Vignetting doesn’t really bother me as it’s not noticeable on anything but test slides but the DSE along the top and bottom is visible when watching sports. The retailer won’t take it back as DSE does not constitute a fault and Sony have looked and said it’s within tolerance. I’ve had issues in the past with other brands and is why I went with Sony for my last tv and this current one. My previous tv a 55” X70E had no DSE at all this X89J does so I won’t take a Sony TV next time as it seems their quality control has taken a slide. I don’t want to start returning TV’s and playing the panel lottery as this one is just tolerable and the next one could and most likely will be worse. Instead I will just change TV brands next time.

The 85" qn800a Only had a faint DSE spot. But was suffering from an audio issue. The QN90A in the living room was bad it had DSE throughout the screen, But both are perfect now... 🤞🏾🤞🏾 If I would've gotten another bad screen I was switching to Oleds for sure.

So glad to see this video. I had these dark splotches (didn’t know the name for the effect) on the upper corner of my Sony X95. Caught it just a month or so before my Best Buy Geek Squad warranty ran out. Best Buy replaced the TV (with a refund which allowed me to upgrade since prices had dropped) and in so many words told me my effected TV would be disposed, and I was not liable to return in. Since the splotches weren’t horrible, and hardly noticeable unless bright scenes play, I basically just scored an extra 65” X95 for my gym.

I contacted support which told me to run a 1 hour long video flickering between colours extremely fast and also to give it about 2 weeks and then check again. That 1 hour video seemed like it did improve it all cuz now the DSE is mostly visible from the sides. I'm giving it 2 weeks like they said and then I'll make my mind up if I will keep it, change for a new one or to a completely different tv.

I was worried about OLED burn in as I use it for a monitor (but from the bed). So I bought a LED panel one from Philips, and it has slight DSE, but you really gotta look for it. Overall satisfied and accepted that there is no perfect TV, I'll be more aware next time. I just don't know how realistic it is to return a biga$$ TV, I mean the unboxing an installation was such a chore in itself. I don't necessarily want to minmax it and pull the lever to get another one, and another... So many things could go wrong. If I deem it acceptable might as well just stick with it. I mean I did minmax my monitor but that's different and is used for work, I was hunting for bad pixels and there was in-store unboxing of several until we found a perfect one. That's a bit unreasonable for TVs (store employees will surely hate you for making them unbox and exhaustively several TVs that look perfectly good for the average person but you are nitpicking about a bad pixel you will not even see from over 1.5-2m distance or a DSE you didn't know exists before this video :D). Or with infinie money order 10 different models, test them all in your home, then return the bottom 9 with a courier? They'll just love you. Realize TVs used to be black and white and bulky in terms of depth. Nowadays they are far more brilliant than most people's eyes have ever seen. After seeing how crappy TVs are set up in hotels, and at non-TV-enthusiastic people's homes, with wtf/default settings... the fact that we care even a tiny bit about picture quality to notice flaws means we pay attention and are already better off. If it's not that annoying, just be happy with it :)
