What Is Diabetes? | 2 Minute Guide | Diabetes UK

We have a more recent video on this topic. View it here: • What is diabetes? [Spo...
3.8 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes in the UK, but a lot of people still don't know what diabetes is.
Diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition where your blood glucose level is too high.
There are two main types, Type 1 and Type 2. They're different conditions, but they're both serious. There are some other rarer types of diabetes too.
For more information about diabetes go to our website: www.diabetes.org.uk/
We've invested millions into diabetes research over the last decade alone, thanks to your donations. With your help, we're getting closer to a cure.

My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article kzread.infoUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.

*My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*

Even though I wasn’t diagnosed with diabetus until 1990,when I was about 55, my doctor thought I had it at least 10 years before that based on my sugar level- I hadn’t been to a doctor prior since the 1970’s and just started having slow healing wounds and nerve damage in my feet in the late 1980’s. The moral here is you can go a long time having diabetus without having symptoms. So it’s good to get checkups. I wish I did

One thing that really frustrates me about the subject of Diabetes is, how many people out there aren't aware of, & don't even believe, either. That there is such a thing as TYPE 1.5 also. 1.5 is what my maternal grandmother had years ago before she died in 1991 at 72 yrs old. I've called the Diabetes Association & told them about my grandma having this & that I'd certainly appreciate it if they would start advertising this Type of Diabetes also. So far, no luck. Just like those who have 1 or 2 alone, Type 1.5 is just as dangerous too if & when it isn't found or treated, either. For those who aren't aware of what Type 1.5 is, The most straightforward description I can give is this. You have just as much symptoms of Type 1 as you do Type 2 Diabetes. You can wake up extremely low & fall asleep with it dangerously high. It reminds me of myself & my grandma whom when we both started in our early years having thyroid problems. We would go from hyper one week & be skinny like a rake to hypo the following week & have actually gained 50 or more pounds without ever eating differently, more or less, changing exercise routines, etc... Our metabolism in our bodies changed that much & that quickly too. No joke, all fact. When my grandma got older & started having diabetes symptoms, they had a hard time determining if she was 1 or 2 & that's because she had both. She had just as much of Type 1's symptoms as she did Type 2's symptoms. She was 50% of each. Back then, they didn't know much about how to treat someone with both where I live. So, grandma ended up with Gangrene, amongst many other issues too as a result of untreated thyroid problems, etc... I really would appreciate it if doctors out there would make videos like this one about people like my late grandma who had Type 1.5 Diabetes. It really needs to be advertised & put out there because, there could be many people out there who are unaware that they are like my grandma was & a friend of mine who is now in her 50s with it also. More people need to become aware of this issue too, if we want all people to be treated fairly, & for their bodies to be able to fight & be given a fair chance at life too. So please. Would you mind doing a video that explains to all people possible that my grandma's problem was & is a real problem & not some story that I made up as may people think? Too many people even medical professionals don't believe that this problem exists. Thank you very much for your time & help in this matter. It's greatly appreciated by us all. Take care. Marie Sparling from Iroquois Falls, Ontario, Canada.

Uhh can I just ask one thing. How come at 1:32 the cartoon figure in the bottom right is wearing a turban? Was that really necessary? Like I know diabetes is common amongst Indians but I found that pretty strange

How is it that doctors know for sure that you are indeed diabetic and not, for example, just eating too much sugar your body does not need (so it stays in the blood, instead of going into cells that are already supplied with enough sugar)????

Hi @TanjaVK1968 - The main blood test used for diagnosing diabetes is called the HbA1c test. HbA1c is what’s known as glycated haemoglobin. This is something that’s made when the glucose (sugar) in your body sticks to your red blood cells. Your body can’t use the sugar properly, so more of it sticks to your blood cells and builds up in your blood. Red blood cells are active for around 2-3 months, which is why the reading is taken quarterly (very different from finger-pricking). 💙

@@diabetesuk thanks..but i still dont get it. So this test shows that your body cannot process sugar normally. But does it shows WHY (because body is stuffed already with EXCESSIVEsugar OR body cannot process ANY sugar)?? Because if it is too much sugar - the answer is proper diet and not medications.

@@TanjaVK1968 Making dietary changes such as reducing the consumption of added sugars (not naturally occuring sugars) and processed carbs can make a difference, but some people require the extra help from medication if the natural insulin in the body is not doing its job or even when the pancreas itself is not functioning correctly. It really depends on the individual, and for many people with type 2 diabetes, medication is not a permanent treatment (unlike type 1 diabetes where you are on insulin indefinitely).
