What is Cyberpunk? - The Origin of the SciFi Subgenre - Science Fiction, Expressionism and Film Noir

Today we look into the origins of Cyberpunk (mostly the film perspective). Science Fictions, (German) Expressionism, Film Noir. A special focus will be Metropolis, M, The Third Man + The Maltese Falcon, Métal hurlant aka Heavy Metal, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", Blade Runner, and Neuromancer. The complexity of this topic is vast and I could only scratch the surface of this SciFi subgenre. I hope you still enjoy it.
I focus more on the film site of things. Shout outs to Akira, Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix
There will be mistakes too.
► Mistakes:
-
In the introduction section there's a "to explain" too much, no idea why I didn't notice 😅 There are some more little language mistakes like that.
- Tom Maddox is most likely the origin of the term Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics (ICE), however William Gibson made it popular in his books. As far as I could find out, the term is from an unpublished script and according to a statement of Maddox he showed the script to Gibson, who wanted to use it and asked for permission, which was granted by Maddox, quote:
"Maddox is the originator of the term Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics (or ICE). According to Maddox, he coined the term in the manuscript of an unpublished story that he showed to Gibson at a science fiction convention in Portland, Oregon. Gibson asked permission to use the acronym, and Maddox agreed. The term was then used in Gibson’s early short stories and eventually popularized in the novel Neuromancer, in which Maddox was properly acknowledged. " - www.epubbooks.com/author/tom-...

    Clear and comprehensive breakdown of the biggest influences. Metal Hurlant in particular gets very little play in these things normally and I was delighted you took the time to really show off Metropolis. Another great film from the 70s, although a flop I believe, was Logan's Run; Brilliant miniature-work for the time, dystopian control and ideological rebellion, implants, I always thought it was very proto-cyberpunk.

I have seen most of the animes and movies you mentioned, read most of the seminal novels, I got some Metal Hurlant colletions back in the day, and little by little the cyberpunk infection has gotten into my system. I have read anthologies, literary criticism articles and essays, as well as numerous video essays on KZread, but no one ever mentioned the connection between German Expressionism-Film Noir-Cyberpunk. That was a piece that was missing until now. Thanks for the tip buddy, it may be crucial in the solving of this mystery that Cyberpunk is...

Videos. ---- Hi TPG, First of all a big thank you for your incredible work and time you have done for this video! Here, quickly in German, I'm about to run the text through a translator, because I don't have time to translate everything ;-). Cyberpunk is - next to science fiction, horror and fantasy - one of my rather rare favorite genres and I'm glad that you took care of the historical background in the depth (as you are used to)! Cyberpunk (and also the subgenres steampunk, biopunk, etc) still has a niche existence, which hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 will now upgrade a bit and bring into consumer awareness. I've been surprised for decades that there aren't many more fans, especially on the Internet. On the other hand, cyberpunk also partly shows quite realistically the dystopian future of humanity, enslaved under megacorporations, NGOs and totally controlled, monitored and oppressed. These possible future prospects probably only a few people want to hear about ... I personally approached the topic as a teenager with the then Amiga game "Syndicate" from 1993, further with System Shock 1994 and the Deus Ex series until today. The topic of games was unfortunately a bit underrepresented in your video, but that's understandable given the length. Interesting were the explanations back to Metropolis, which few people will even know. Other movies (or even series!) with cyberpunk reference can be easily pulled from Wikipedia. I enjoyed seeing: The Rattlesnake 1981, Robocop 1987, 12 Monkeys 1995, Gattaca 1997, Matrix 1999, Equilibrium 2002 and many more. I loved your comment about Westworld, Yul Brynner was a hit! There is now also a Westworld series btw. Interesting are also your comments on anime (nice that you know about that too!), in this case Akira and GitS. I immediately think of Ergo Proxy and especially Blame! and anything else by Tsutomu Nihei that definitely needs to be mentioned. Fullmetal Alchemist is definitely steampunk, as are other anime and manga that mix old and new technology -> retro-futurism. If you will, then also partly in even popular brands like Naruto and less HunterxHunter, that have such elements (making them even more interesting for me). A big and important topic that you didn't address at all was music! Music is one of the essential carriers of tension and emotion in media, and it also brings across that very cyberpunk feeling that we love so much. "Cyberpunk" music (e.g. also called Dark Electro, etc.) has a certain niche existence, so the score of Cyberpunk 2077 is recommended for enthusiasts as a very good introduction. By the way, I have read the books of Philip K. Dick, but found the cinematic realizations partly better, because these were also story wise more adapted to the respective time and I have anyway a soft spot for CGI and powerful images. Total Recall from 1990 is one of my absolute favorite films, Minority Report could also be seen. Blade Runner I will watch again today after about 20 years ;-) Wish you a nice day and hopefully many more (long!) videos.

    Danke ^^ Very nice that you translated it to in English too, so other viewers know what is going on. Yes there are a lot of topics I sadly did not cover and I think I need to make a second part covering the time from the 80s to now. Esp. I regret not talking about William Gibson more, who also made one specific Cyberpunk style popular with Neuromancer (ofc inspired by the Heavy Metal magazine from the 70s) that is a bit different compared to Blade Runner. Cyberpunk 2077 is more in the style of Gibson using some of his terminology (Street Samurai, ICE, Night City, etc). Sadly Cyberpunk 2077's reception was not that great due to the technical problems and it being release while still in beta state. Even with current patch it still has problems, which shows that the game really needed another year of development time for a good release, though it's slowly getting better. I fear a bit that this might have a negative impact on the genre. I Also really love Ghost in the Shell, Total Recall (also written by Dan O'Bannon who also worked with Moebius on the mentioned the Long Tomorrow) and also Matrix. As you wrote there are also some great Cyberpunk games. Deus Ex (2000) is my favourite game of all time, but you also mentioned System Shock and Syndicate, etc. One could also mention Snatcher by Hideo Kojima from 1988. Yes as you say the 80s heavily influenced the music common for this genre, that's also a topic I could not fit into it. So I definitely feel the need for a part 2. Sadly the video did not perform too well to be honest, which I expected, but it performed even below my already low expectations, though I think it's one of the best videos I have ever made. Currently part 2 is not that high on my priority list as a result, but I definitely will make it at some point. I'm not looking too much at numbers (which is also a privilege), but ofc it's sometime hard to justify to put 1-2 months of work into a video while every thing else is on hold. This only works if the channels runs well and my passion for the project is there. As you say the Cyberpunk sub-genre is a bit Niche. One thing might be that it simply does not really provide "escapism" (it pretty much never does) like e.g. some fantasy stories and as such it's maybe not as appealing. Ofc there is also popular darker fantasy (e.g. A Song of Ice and Fire), but in fantasy you have a broader spectrum. Fantasy stories work with less, while in Cyberpunk or SciFi you often need a lot of exposition per definition and cover more "philosophical" topics. As a result fantasy can also be more character driven, while hard SciFi and Cyberpunk focus much on the "idea". As said Cyberpunk is really narrowly defined. So you always know what you get. If you don't like it, there is not much you can do. In e.g. fantasy subgenre's you find more variety I think. So It's a combination of a lot of factors and maybe only the fantasy/SciFi hybrid Star Wars manages to break out a bit (if they are not busy making abysmal films, meaning the sequel trilogy). I think in general (hard) SciFi is more niche. I think one can make the categories "focus on emotion" and "focus on the idea" for stories. And "focus on emotion" is always more popular, because the other one needs a lot of build up and a certain mindset of the viewer. If the idea is also so abstract or complex, you can easily lose the audience. I really loved Nolan's Tenet, but it's really difficult to think the idea of it through. The Transhumanism ideas of Cyberpunk are maybe easier to understand in cpmarison, but also can get really complex. While with "focus on emotion" stories you can be more character driven and create more relatable conflicts. For me a good SciFi story often makes me think when I red/saw the ending and in some cases the "thinking about the implications of the story" (the "idea") takes more time than seeing/reading it. I enjoy that, but that is different for other people, who want a more emotional experience (and there is nothing wrong with that). But I think this is why Cyberpunk (and to a degree hard SciFi in general) is niche and will remain niche.

    First of all, I love this video. You not only just flat out made a good video, but you also gave me some really good ways to describe to people what I like about the movie Bladerunner. Most of the people I know say that it’s boring, which although over all I think it’s great, but I see that too. But now all of the background, or I guess inspirations, that you added in here, I can give a batter description of why I like it. (I guess it helps that I’ve seen and read most of what you talked about in this video, ha ha.) You also showed me stuff that have slipped through the cracks of what I’ve experienced. Like The Long Tomorrow. I’ll have to find that and read it, I love Jean Giraud, or just French sci-fi, so I’m sure I’ll love this comic if I can find it. Before recently I never wanted anything cyberpunk. It was all hard sci-fi or nothing. Like Arthur C Clark, or something like that. Then that other video about the history of cyberpunk became visible to me. The four hour three parter. I’ve gone nuts about cyberpunk and your video is great like his, but I didn’t need to set aside time to watch it. I also like yours because of the attention to history of the genre you showed in here. I may be wrong about this, but if I was to add anything to this video it would be the story about how Scott showed Bladerunner to Dick and Dick loved it and said that he understood the book and actually liked the film better than his book. Which is funny considering how amazing all of Dicks books are. I may have that story all wrong though. Not sure. I’m sorry, I probably missed something. Seriously though, I loved it!!

There is for sure a ton of stuff I missed, but you are right that would be an interesting addition. Also thank you for the long comment!

    In this context, one way to define the literary genre of 'science fiction' is to contrast it with its opposite literary genre 'Romanticism.' Science fiction stories spring from a conjectured reality in the external world that does not currently exist. Romanticism emanates from the internal, emotional world of a character. Genres can share features. It's where the emphasis lies that defines the genre.

    Interesting video! It seems whenever we try to "distill" genres into concrete definitions, the more illusive they become. Although Blade Runner has elements associated with film noir, I don't think cyberpunk needs to have noir elements. The Matrix does not, but is still cyberpunk. One of the best definitions I've heard for cyberpunk is that it's a "combination of lowlife and high tech". This is mirrored in the the aesthetic, which juxtaposes technology against a grungy, urban setting where most people live in poverty and semi-squalor. Actually, The Batman (2021) felt like a cyberpunk aesthetic to me, although the tech/science fiction elements weren't there to make it legitimate cyberpunk. Interestingly, though, I think it might be considered a "modern noir" film.

    Amazing video, and a great overview on the cyberpunk genre. Since you mentioned Casshern, its likely that that series was inspired by 8-Man, which has a similar concept and protagonist. 8-Man was the "Robocop" of his day. And while Casshern is often called an "android", he is actually a cyborg. Other cyberpunk series Japan has given us include well-known titles like "Ghost in the Shell" and "Battle Angel Alita".

    @@ThePhilosophersGames No problem. And yes; that is right. You see, 8-Man was created by Kazumasa Hirai and Jiro Kuwata (both of who are no longer with us now). The character debuted in 1963 with his own manga and a TV series. The series hasn't had as many reiterations as other older series have, which explains its obscurity. But 8-Man is very similar to Robocop, because he was a police officer before he became a cyborg. And he underwent the same procedure as Casshern in which he had his essence transferred from his human body into a robot body. So he and Casshern share that in common with Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. And the reason why he's called 8-Man is because he's the 8th experiment.

    I have an alternative question. Does cyberpunk have to be set in a future setting? Could you have a cyberpunk setting in the 1930s, or would that just be film noir? And also, does cyberpunk have to be set in OUR future. Could cyberpunk be set in a world that’s not earth, and if so would that categorize Star Wars as cyberpunk?

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

    3 жыл бұрын

    It could be set in another world. Star Wars does not focus on the typical themes if Cyberpunk. In a way Star wars is a bit "punk", but it's not really cyber if that makes sense. Time is relative. Cyberpunk is not limited to the future, because from our perspective Blade Runner plays in he past (it plays in the year 2019 or Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep plays in 1992 ^^). Important are in my opinion themes and style.

    @@ThePhilosophersGames well that also opens the question of does cyberpunk have to be inherently pessimistic and dark? Basically what would it be called to have a lighthearted and optimistic version of blade runner or something with blue clear skies and happy androids. Like overwatch or something. Is that just classified as futuristic? That has all of the cyber but none of the punk.

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    We have something like this with Star Trek (a very optimistic world at least in TNG), but that is just considered science fiction. The science fiction subgenre Cyberpunk is really about those dystopian worlds and the other ingredients I listed - as explained in the video. It's quite strict in that regard. Cyberpunk is just a sub category of science fiction. In a way cyberpunk is also a phenomenon of the 80s and we have today this hommage cyberpunk, but I guess the genre does not really develop much further, maybe one day that will change again. In the 80s it just happend that we got several works of that style in a row (it was something new and the works were similar enough to find a category for them -> Cyberpunk), but this is ofc different today.

    Honestly probably not. One of the fundamentals in cyberpunk is Electricity. Literally everything in cyberpunk has electricity flowing through it. 1930s would heavily lean into Diesel Punk instead due to the lack of technological infrastructure world wide. In cyberpunk more often than not. The entire city is connected digitally electronically and its citizens reflect that by being just as entwined or artifical as the buildings surrounding them. Also it's in the name. Cyber. I dont see 1930s having sophisticated enough to operate on a digital level as they were all pretty Analogue back then.

    Yes. I think the biggest "recent" things were the film Blade Runner 2049 (which is really good) and the video game Cyberpunk 2077 (which launch was controversial due to all its technical problems, but is no with patches much better; it's heavily inspired by William Gibson and Neuromancer). Cyberpunk is nothing new though, I found the story decent and it fun to play, but it does not bring much new story wise or re-invents the genre. But it's a decent game with patches and the right hardware + visually quite impressive.

    It's a mix of a lot of things. It's not very focused on covering "SciFi" topics, themes and elements and has some roots also in mythology. But it's close enough to classic SciFi, to boost the SciFi genre as a whole. There was a long time (in Film) where SciFi was basically dead and Star Wars revived it. Films like Blade Runner or Alien or shows like Star Trek TNG are also results of Star Wars' success. It's not hard SciFi, maybe not even soft SciFi, if you want to make this distinction, but it has enough SciFi elements in it, that it is connected to the SciFi genre and had an impact on it. You could argue that other sources like the Heavy Metal Magazine (e.g. The Long Tomorrow) influenced Cyberpunk, as William Gibson (Neuromancer) would point out. But the attention and willingness by media companies (including book companies) to invest into this genre was for sure influenced by Star Wars and it's success. Even if one would not like Star Wars.

    Just to add to my answer (I thought a bit about it, it also helps when you have slept a night after a video release): I guess in a way may video only covers the time until Blade Runner came out and then I had to come to and end only skipping through what came after it for completeness sake. I wanted to complete the video a week ago and worked like 2 month on it in parallel. Longer "editorial" videos are time consuming to make. Maybe I make a part 2 or a post Blade Runner video one day. In that one Neuromancer would clearly be a main focus. I also always wanted to make a The Matrix analysis video, which also borrowed ideas from Neurmancer. So I guess the topic cyberpunk will come back.

    2001 was not a flop when it came out. It was a big hit ending up the second highest-grossing film of 1968. It was especially popular science geeks, budding filmmakers, people who used recreational drugs and people under forty in general. Critics love to pull out negative reviews and interviews of people from the time who thought it was obtuse nonsense but those do not represent the majority of the audience. And I think you may be confusing inspiration and cultural influence with plagiarism.

How lonely many have become. What it means for interpersonal relationships. It saw so much coming. Roughly around 39:54 you mentioned big companies care about money is an artificial and today virtual construct created by mankind??? That has been from the very beginning of the humankind, money and/or power. It is also at least naïve to consider government would force big companies to respect employees and customers. It is revolting how often politicians are left out of the equation while in reality their symbiotic relationship with big companies is quite evident throughout the history... Politicians couldn't care less!

  • @ThePhilosophersGames

    @ThePhilosophersGames

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes ofc money was for a long time a construct to allow easier trading and keep people's greed in check (I assume that was more a side effect though). But there were historically some partially "exceptional" times that could be debated, so I worded this a bit careful. E.g. when money was bound to an gold equivalent, etc. Depends where you are from I guess (and on the politician 😅 I know a lot don't care, some do though inside their limits of the political game). E.g. in my country (Germany) companies would treat people much worse, when certain laws wouldn't exist. It does not mean everything is perfect or that economy wouldn't takes a ton of influence on the law making side, but it could be far worse here. An example is: laws forced Valve to implement a 14 days refund policy on Steam, because in Germany (actually in all EU countries) it's your right being able refund online purchased things within 14 days (basically no questions asked, with some special rules) and they can't revoke that right by simply writing it in their terms of service, so if they want to operate in Europe, they have to comply with the law. Valve would have never done this without those laws in place. Same with other paid vacation days, healthcare, pension, etc. Ofc some laws are stupid, greedy, focus too heavy on corporate interests and greed or are poorly executed, but not all laws are that way - at least here.
