I didn't know anything about clicker training. I was reading a book in the evening, it told a story about a dog that, no matter what they did, would not lay down. My young girl Teaghan was much the same way. I got up and started shaping her to a down, it took 2 session, maybe 5 minutes total. I like the bribery vs. reinforcement section of your video. I just think of it this way, bribery is showing a treat *before* the behavior. Reinforcement is payment after the behavior.

I just started clicker training with my parents' maltese (age 9) and yorkshire terrier (age 5). They're pretty well behaved dogs, but they've developed a few bad habits that I'd like to break them of. I introduced them to the clicker by running through the basic tricks they know and rewarding them accordingly. The yorkie was intimidated by the sound at first, but she warmed up when she connected it with the snack reward. Now they both come running to heel when I pick up the clicker. I love it!

Thank you so much for making this video. I've trained two dogs in the past but I've never heard of clicker training or prt. After watching your video I ran out and bought a clicker cause we just got and puppy. She's 13 weeks and already shows signs that she learns quick. I'm excited to start her training with a clicker! I'll keep you posted on her performance. Thanks again!!!!

Like a number of others... I want to thank you for an excellent description of the clicker training. I, like you in the beginning of your video, was unfamiliar with them and thought that they were silly. I changed my mind after reading a Karen Pryor article and after buying one I looked for info on how to properly use it. Your explanation satisfied that need. My dog is an 8 month old GSD/Husky. I like the mention of muffling the sound. Some people think that if they have it a foot away it is fine, when a lot of the time it isn't. Personally, I have two clickers. I live in a household where the TV is often on and so I have a loud very sharp clicker for distance work and work with the TV on, ect, and a soft click for working on the ground, at night when it is quiet, ect ect. My favourite saying is, "The clicker is not a reward and it is not a command. It is only a sign that a reward is coming." I know somebody who used one only to teach their dog to come, and now they use the clicker or snap their fingers to get their dog to come. Which is all well and good, but now to actually use the clicker correctly, they would need to desensitize and recharge the clicker, which, depending on the dog, may be incredibly difficult. I have only recently started using a clicker and the difference between my dogs is shocking. One is traditionally trained, the other clicker trained. One is basically terrified if he thinks I am angry and the other comes over and gives me kisses if he thinks I am angry. One takes a good 10 minutes to warm up to doing tricks, the other will do them rain, hail, or shine, reward or no reward. I think that clicker training my dog has made me a better person, and has very much opened my eyes to how dogs think. I wish to be a dog behaviorist and spread awareness about clicker training and it's benefits. I recently came into contact with people saying that positive training was just bribery and that you couldn't train a working dog to herd using it. I showed them to a video of a very talented treibball dog, and while I am sure I didn't away anybody, I know that this is what I want to do from now on.

It's a toss up between sit, down or a positive interrupter. Depending on where you live and your lifestyle it would really differ. I taught Luna sit, down, paw, interrupter, stay, recall (I believe in that order) - it was so long ago. But I really get my clients to teach a positive interrupter at the same time frame as sitting and recall.

I would like to say that positive activity does work. click training, training collar, and even force training. I've had several labs and depending on the dog I have had to resort to just about all. Also one of my labs was Alpha or dominant trait from 6 weeks, which I needed to try and reduce or eradicate. She ended up being my best Dog 16 years

Yes, it's always a good idea to incorporate known behaviours when first using a clicker, such as sit or down (if your dog knows these). Once you see your dog looking in anticipation for the reward after the click.

The clicker is just for the learning stage in training a behaviour. You would give a cue, shape the behaviour or capture it, click as soon as it happens, reward with food as well as praise. After the dog knows the behaviour reliably, you can take out the clicker and just use praise and food rewards, then once it's perfect you can start weaning out food rewards at a ratio of 4:5, 3:5, 2:5, 1:5, every perfect performance.

I was wondering how to manage clicker training with two dogs. I guess the obvious is to train at different times with one dog only. However, in my situation without leaving my house it will be difficult to use the clicker with one dog without the other hearing it. I have a 10 week old spoodle and a four yr old border collie x kelpie. The 4 yr old was basically trained without the clicker ( we were unaware of this method at the time) but could benefit from further training to improve consistency and response time to certain behaviours. I'm wondering if I train one and the other can hear but is not receiving treats will that desensitize the other to the clicker.

Hi...and thank you so much for the explanation and especially the detailed use of the clicker and how bribery and reinforcement differ. I noticed that at the end of the video, you mentioned using it in fear/aggression training. Can you explain a bit more please? I assume that I need a "safe/happy" word (like LASER that you use with Luna) and then a CLICK to reinforce the positive "change" out of the negative behavior with a reward for doing so. Is this correct? (would 2 dogs need 2 different "happy" words or can they use the same one?). Thank you so much!

Hi there, I have question about a comment you made in this video about clicking as a distraction. I've watched all your videos in the past, but I don't remember if you use the positive interrupter (which I learned about from kikopup). As far as I understand, Emily charges her interrupter cue the same way she charges the clicker, then makes the noise to interrupt undesirable behaviors. Would making that noise while the dog is performing an unwanted behavior only reinforce that behavior?

Yes that could definitely work. Watch the timing though as it may be hard to quickly snap it at the right time. Remember the click is just a distinctive noise that you don't hear regularly so the dog can associate it with "hey I did something right!", you can use a clicker on a pen, a whistle, YES (verbal word).

Thanks for clearing the difference between bribery and reinforcement. It seems to me that I have been using bribery with my dog because he only does his tricks when i show him the treats. My dog knows a lot of tricks at this time and is practicing it for a long time now and I am not sure if I can still teach him the right way (reinforcement) how to do it without anything in my hand. Is it possible to change the way he does the tricks or will I teach the tricks all over again? Great video! TY

I'm considering starting with a clicker, as I have found my dog is pretty smart, and want to train her all the way up to being a therapy dog.(I work in the medical field) She is 4 months, and her name is ALSO Luna! My questions is, when starting the clicker training, should I associate it with known tricks? She already has sit/stay/shake/down/High five. Should I "charge" her understanding of the clicker (as you put it), and then proceed to using known tricks with it? Then carry on to new stuff?

  • @sheeeve08

Interesting ... I know of a number of trainers who both learned and began by positive only and were seeing their clients continually struggle with it, and when they went to more balanced training, they started to succeed greatly. They were not at all with misconceptions about using treats, in fact, a great majority of what they still do is on the basis of treats in training. I don't use a clicker, but I do use marker training for my dogs, just, verbally marking the behavior with specific words followed by a reward.

Hello I've done the first step introducing my dog to the clicker. My question is since I've started with the clicker do I have to use the clicker throughout the day with every command? Or do I just use the clicker when I'm teaching my dog a new clicker trick/command? Any info you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We're getting a border collie for the first time in 2 weeks and were wondering what type of dog food and treats you use for Luna and any other advice/tips? Thanks!

Hi great video but i didnt understood very well one thing... After you train the dog with the clicker training and you go out with him and after a while when you stop to speak with someone you say for example "seat", will he be waiting for the sound and treat after sitting or not? its because its not easy to go out always with cliker and the treat... thanks (sorry any mistake but i'm not english)

If your teaching your puppy to sit and they continue to sit after the first command, would you continue to click and reward several times while they stay there? Would you continue to the next trick, such as down, to get him/her to move back and forth between tricks? How do you know if you're overloading him/her with too many tricks too soon?

Where did you get your certification? I'm in high school now but I really want to be a dog trainer once I'm done with it. I've been clicker training my dog an he's just about perfect now. He does really well with basic doggy manners and he knows around 35 tricks.

Kristin, My dog (Yorkshire Terrier) Jack is afraid of the sound of the clicker. I even got a clicker with a soft sound, but no matter what I try or what treat I offer, if I "click", he refuses the treat and runs away. Any suggestions?

Loved the video, my question is how old should the puppy be when you start using the clicker?

First of all thank you for all the wonderful and helpful videos :) I do have a question about when you are slowly going to give less treats for the asked behaviour. For example if you first give treats for every well performed action and then slowly are decreasing it to for example 1 treat every 2 times. Are you at that stage also only clicking on the second time or are you still clicking each time but just giving less treats?

I am not entirely sure the treats I am using for charging my clicker are reinforcing enough for my puppy. Is there any way to tell what IS reinforcing enough? I use these little liver flavoured dog/puppy treats, which according to the package, contain mostly natural ingredients. Will real chicken/beef work better? how do you keep the real meat? just in the fridge? or do you freeze it?

You can start right away. I don't have any housetraining videos unfortunately, you can search Kikopup on youtube and find hers which are wonderful.
