What Is Blowby? What Is Too Much Blowby?
Every engine produces blowby, but too much of it can be an indicator of cylinder damage or other engine wear. This video goes into what blowby is, how to troubleshoot it, and how important blowby is. Any questions can be left in the comment section and I try to answer the comments. Thanks for the good info mine dont look bad after that lass one in the vid!
Thought I'd mention that different engine manufactures run this test differently, i.e. idle no load to high idle no load. Just so the viewer knows but depending on engine manufacture you can have other causes of high blowby. Such as a bad air-compressor. A leaking intake manifold/valve cover gasket bad oil seperator. It's getting to the point now a days that the rule of thumb is getting thrown out the window. Love your videos keep them coming. :)

This is my first time viewing your videos and I have to say I am now a fan! Great info! I used to work on Caterpillar truck engines in late 90's early 2000's and have seen this myself. I remember getting some with a scored cylinder pack that would puff fumes out of the blowby tube every time that cylinder fired. I miss working on these engines since I have been out of the game for almost 12 years but I am slowly working back into it looking to re-start my career in diesel repair.

I have been driving tractor trailers and am now in real estate. I enjoy driving trucks but real estate not so much. I have missed the diesel field for quite some time but seems difficult to get hired today without certifications. I have tried for Peterbilt, Cummins, and Detroit Diesel since we don't really have a Cat Truck shop anymore since they phased out. The only Cat shop we have now is more for heavy equipment and I don't really care to work on the machines, prefer trucking. Seems like the ones getting hired have technical school and certifications but little experience. My old Cat job was old school and basically just trained on the job so I left without much to show and now I have been out of it for some time. They have since closed shop since the Cat truck engine market kind of died of. Thanks for the reply

Great Vedic 👍👍
Good morning Josh! Came back to this video as we have a truck in the shop that had combustion gasses in the cooling system and it received a long block (PACCAR MX-13). The truck now has blow by both out of the oil fill tube and the crankcase tube. For transparency the technician that did the install was inexperienced and did not replace the oil cooler or flush the oil module (Claims there was no metal) and they used about a half a can of ether over the course of an afternoon as they could not get the truck to start initially (Bad High Pressure Pumps). CCV filter has been replaced. He was told to drop the pan and inspect the liners from the underside. He found a small vertical mark on cylinder 2 and orders from above were to replace the liner and rings on said cylinder. He stated to me he couldn’t really feel it with his fingernail. I don’t believe it will solve the issue. After his repairs I’m looking to come up with a strategy to isolate the source of the blow by. This is what I have come up with: Bring truck up to operating temperature. Verify blow by. Disconnect air compressor inlet and outlet to isolate air compressor. Run unit and revaluate. Pull rocker shafts off to ensure closed valves. Remove turbo feed and drain tubes from block. Pressurize turbo inlet to check turbo and intake valve seal integrity. Revaluate unit. With the rocker shafts out pull all 6 injectors and perform a cylinder leak down test on each cylinder. Wanted to see if you have any input? I can email you a video of the blow by and the mark the technician had found. It was his first major engine job and I’m preparing to take over his work.

Also metallic glitter was found in the oil pan once he dropped it to inspect the liner bores!
A turbo may cause crankcase pressure but by definition is not blow by. Blow by is literally gases blown by the rings in a cylinder.
Remind me of a truck at work, had blowby as bad as the RV and burned 8 gallons of oil a day. They used it that way for about 10 months

Hi u simplify technicien information and put it in excellent order , this simplify things
I have also heard that if you removed the oil fill cap - and feel strong puffs of air coming out of the oil fill hone (with engine running) - that often means the rings are bad.

I know nothing about engines but removed my oil filler cap on my diesel and it was puffing air out like a steam train. No smoke or colour, just air and oil.
So accurate. I always said when a Cat engine idles and it has that sweet oil smell it's going to blow up real soon. Also I don't know why some Cat liners have a real noticable taper after many hours verses a Cummins..Maybe because Cat depends on Two compression rings as other manufacturers use more rings for this purpose.
Good info

Great information I have a question about blow-by. What if you have blow-by at idle and it goes away when you Rev up your engine. What could be the cause? Thanks
Thanks for the tips! How long did the owner/driver run the RV like this? What % of power do you believe was lost? Fuel mileage percentage?
My c15 acert had tons of blow by when hot. After replacing my high pressure turbo it all cleared up.
My c7 has a lot of blowby only at a cold start. It only has about 185k miles currently. My mechanic said to just keep up on the oil level and it should hold up. What's your take on this?

Nice explanations,thanks; And if the crankcase is pressurized,the oil cannot drain down from the turbo? and ends up in the intake pipes,and then,you have a lot of blue smoke from the exhaust? And,that can lead to engine RUNAWAY???!!
my cat 3116 have blow by after the engine warms up ? Could it be the engine or the valve seals ? I had a overhaul engine rebuild about 60 000 miles ago and unless something was done wrong I don’t think it’s the block
Just because something makes sound through a mic crackly doesn't mean that sound is called static. Static noise is only caused by stray electricity or bad tuning or signal.

@AdeptApe
7 жыл бұрын
I don't believe it is legal with the EPA and since your truck is a 2007 or newer, a knowledgeable DOT inspector may notice that your engine isn't an emissions engine. Now depending on what area you are in they may not notice, but if you got caught it could be some big fines. I understand wanting to put a more reliable and powerful engine in your truck, but I would hate to mislead you. If you know someone that has done it in your area maybe you can discuss it with them, but as far as I know, it is risky. I'm glad you like my videos, In going to be doing a regen class soon as well so if you want to know more about your emissions maybe check it out when it comes out.
I’m interested in that tool to measure flow out the blow by tube. I currently use a manometer and that is a lot less hassle.
Great videos sir. Thanks for all the masterful knowledge. I have an '07 W900 with a C-15. Last week it blew the oil fill cap off & pushed out 4 gallons of oil while pulling a load. I replaced the cap & oil and within 10 miles it did it again. We put a pressure gauge on the filler neck & without a load were only able to generate 1-2lbs pressure. A compression test indicated all cylinders are sealing within spec - they should be as this engine has 17,000 miles on it since a complete in-frame. The thought is that the high-pressure turbo has lost its oil seal & is pressuring the crank case. Before the expense of replacement is there anything you would suggest we look for? Thanks again, my son & I really appreciate your vid's.

Looking at a 1993 KW W900. Truck has a 3406B 425HP Serial 4CK09888. Owner parked the truck a year or 2 ago because he started to get blow by. Right now the water pump is off. I spoke to a licensed mechanic and he said it could also be a bad head gasket. I cant start engine until i pay for re and re of water pump. What do yo think on the blow by? If there is no coolant in the oil does that mean its probably worn rings, and if so is it ok to bobtail it home? Truck is in Calgary Alberta and im in Ontario about 3000 miles away. thanks

+Jay Wiles Blowby can be caused by a lot of things, typically it is worn or damaged cylinders, but it could be worn valve seals, turbocharger, or air compressor. It is usually worn cylinders though. You can drive a truck with blowby it doesn't hurt it, unless something is coming apart.
So it means a new engine or rebuild ? And how much approximated price for cat 3126 rebuild ?

+Kjk Alm Where is the oil coming from? The intake housing or the exhaust housing? You might have a plugged crankcase fumes filter, this would cause high crankcase pressure and can make the turbo appear bad even though it isn't.
Hey Adept Ape! Great Channel, I've watched almost every video you have on the C7! Great Channel!! I do have a question for you about an 05' C7 in a straight truck I have. Mechanics found that cyl 5 either has ring damage, or cylinder damage, basically rebuild time.. BUT i'm 1500miles away from home with the truck, can I just unplug the cyl 5 injector and limp home to prevent more damage to the engine, and get her rebuilt at home?
@AdeptApe
8 жыл бұрын
If you already have cylinder damage or a broken ring, then you can unplug the electrical connector to that injector to prevent the injector firing into a dead hole. You should be able to run it home without a problem, obviously you'll have a lot less power. These engines don't have liners though, you probably knew that, so you'll have to get a new sleeves machined in or get a new short block. Let me know if you have any other questions, and subscribe please.

I was going to say that just be mindful, watch your oil pressure and keep your ears open for any knocking. Hopefully you don't have a piston coming apart or something, but it's most likely cylinder scoring. You just don't want to throw a rod. Just be mindful of any weird noises or oil pressure changes. Good luck.

Perdonally, I think the crankshaft would nmbe toasted running 1,500 miles, countess thousands of revolutions, with a missing fire sequence. I hate it and grind enamel off my teeth when my truck-tractor misfired intermittently while warming up in cold ambient temperature. Cost of crankshaft vs tow: probably less expensive to drive it.

4.5L turbo intercooler diesel Runs perfect, idling perfect but burns oil (blue smoke, smells burnt oil) when accellerated or put under load. Smoke comes immediate at metioned, smoke stops immediate after load release. Whats your educated guess ?
@sterlingyoung88
4 жыл бұрын
Ogre Under Bridge White- oil burning through turbo exhaust, turbo, cylinder ware, valve seal, or blow by. White smoke at start up after a duration of time(sitting over night) means a injector is leaking.
I'm seeing oil leaking from the intake hose seals next to the turbo and also from the oil cap. Compression test was done on this engine a few years ago and it was perfect, also I don't see any smoke from the exhaust or loss of power. Is it likely that turbo seals are the problem ? I looked at PCV valve too and at least some air is escaping from it when idling, so it's not fully clogged or something.
My Detroit 60 series has much much greater crankcase pressure at idle than under full load. I've tested it with a manometer. Truck runs great does not use excessive oil. Why would this be? It's smoking me out at idle but no other issues.

Hi, First I must say, great video with so clarity is explaing the issue. I have a 2006 Cadillac SRX 3.6 and get engine oil drops when i park after driving, mechanic says it is a blow by from pcv. Just before this I had the transmission oil leaking so oil cooler and cooler lines were changed.....are these problems related in any way ? My mechanic is now suggesting an oil catch can. Do you think if there is a permanent fix or oil catch can is the only way. pl. help. Thanks
@AdeptApe
7 жыл бұрын
Well I'm no Cadillac expert, but I'll give you my free opinion (you get what you pay for). An engine oil leak doesn't have anything to do with the transmission cooler, as they are separate systems. The PCV system should keep the blowby under control by allowing the intake to ingest the blowby and oil fumes. So if you are getting an oil leak you probably have a problem with your PCV system that fixing should stop the leak. Now a catch can would stop the leak from getting on your driveway, but the engine would still have PCV problem. Sounds like what your mechanic said makes sense.
It's official an in frame and turbos. I'm like Johnny Cash I got it one piece at a time but it cost me every dime. I think these shops know exactly how much money I have.

I have an engine (C15 acert) and it has oil leaking at the top of the air compressor. Is this due to blow by or just something that's common with the air compressors?
So is my Perkins diesel shot if it has blow by that looks like that RV at idle when it is at full throttle ?

What if theres a good amount of blowby but i never have to add oil is that still bad?
Hello , I was looking for a video where you talk about a truck with a new rebuild had a blow by for idle too much
What of engine breather is bringing out oil
great video. I always ran leak down tests if i suspected high blow by to help isolate the problem, but this is a cool way as well. How would i know how many times to multiply (1.5-2) for any given engine? Does CAT or most major engine manufacturers have specific values for this blow by test?
@AdeptApe
8 жыл бұрын
Hey Regal, so the 1.5-2x is the Cat spec on their truck size diesel engines. They vary depending on serial number. A C7 may be 1.75x or a twin turbo C15 might be 2X, but a good rule of thumb is 2X. The problem with leakdown tests is they are hard to do in a diesel setup. The automotive ones are great since you just pull a spark plug and your ready to go, but that could take hours to set up on say a 3406 then you have to reseal all the injectors. Our shop doesn't even have a compression or leakdown test kit. You can try doing a cutout test and watching the blowby to isolate a bad cylinder, that works at times if you have a single bad cylinder. Now when it comes to all engines, gas and diesel, I'm not sure what a good specification would be since a non boosted engine should have significantly less blowby normally, probably 1x horsepower would be my guess or maybe 1.5x for high compression. Thanks for the comment.
@Regal2800
8 жыл бұрын
+Adept Ape Yes leak down tests take long time as you mentioned each injector must be pulled. What do you do when there is no dedicated crankcase breather? I have a pair of Detroit diesel 8v92s and I dont think it has a crankcase breather?
@AdeptApe
8 жыл бұрын
+Regal2800 Hmmmmm, A Detroit question eh!? A 2 stroke at that too, I'm not super familiar with those engines, but every piston engine produces blowby. Do these engines recycle the crankcase fumes into the intake perhaps? Those engines are so unique compared to the traditional inline 6 cylinder 4 strokes that I'm used to, I would have to say I'm not familiar with them enough to really know too much about them. Let me know if you find out where they route the crankcase fumes.

+Adept Ape Well there is a breather vent on each of the valve covers and in my particular case there is a airseps device mounted to each turbo to help create less pressure in the crankcase. The engine does not show smoke through the exhaust pipe. Let me know what you think. Thanks jc

+Curt Clyne If it has high blowby you most likely have worn cylinders, but it can be other things. You can run it because it must likely needs engine repair already, if it starts knocking though then stop obviously
Good stuff to know (which I did not) and Buddy deserves an Academy Award! What a nice pooch! Thank for the Education!
