What Is Bipolar Disorder? - Understanding The Symptoms & More

If you or someone you know is dealing with a challenging situation and could benefit from additional support, consider talking to one of the 10,000 licensed online counselors at BetterHelp.
Bipolar Disorder is a brain disorder where there’s a neurochemical imbalance in a person’s brain. The extreme mood swings between mania and depression. When a person is manic, everything seems fantastic. The person feels euphoric and has a lot of energy. Someone who is experiencing mania talks quickly and has a lot of ideas, but they probably don’t make sense to others. People who are manic engage in risky behavior such as promiscuity, compulsive spending to the point of putting themselves in financial distress. Mania feels good, and many people with Bipolar Disorder like being manic.
On the other hand, when a person with Bipolar Disorder is depressed, they have little to no energy, it’s difficult for them to get out of bed or function and can experience suicidal ideation or actively attempt to end their life. Both mania and depression come with risks. If you have bipolar disorder and you’re experiencing severe depression, where you’re feeling suicidal, go to the emergency room or contact a mental health professional. Bipolar Disorder is manageable when the individual seeks mental health treatment. People with the diagnosis hold down stable jobs, have fulfilling relationships and start families. Working with a therapist, whether that’s online or in your local area, can help you lead a full, happy life with Bipolar Disorder.

It’s very hard for people who aren’t feeling what you are to understand it. I am someone who was diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder at 18 and my family wasn’t supportive. I had to keep in mind that since they aren’t feeling this, they can’t really understand. You know your illness is real and that you are on a road to help yourself to the best of your ability. Allow them to feel however they do and just focus on how to best help yourself. Some ways I’ve used to cope with anxiety are reading books, picking up stress less video games, drawing, I’ve also noticed having a routine helps me feel like I’ve taken some anxiety out of my day by knowing those comforting things are already preplanned and coming.

I finally saw someone that understands because I have the same thing going on in my life to my family does not understand or believe that I am bipolar and I tried to explain to them that I really do and I give them all the signs I have and I told them I am sad a lot and I just have a lot of symptoms of bipolar and it kind of hurts when people say that I doubt that I’m just messing with them because that is not true so thank you for understanding

Having bipolar disorder sucks. I _wish_ I had major depressive disorder and not BAD II sometimes. Hypomania feels great and is easy to confuse for returning to normalcy, and the depression can be totally debilitating. It's pretty awful, and life's normal instabilities can throw me into much more extreme states. Getting a new job? It's not just great, it's _this is amazing it's the best thing in the world wow I'm so excited this is so wonderful it's gonna be the best I can do this for the rest of my life I'm sure._ Fast-forward a bit, and it's "wow, this sucks, what's wrong with me, I thought this was going to be fun but I'm just bored and there's no pleasure in this at all, or anything really, might as well throw myself off a bridge". Losing a job isn't just a little depressing and a time to send-out resumes, it's soul-destroying and ruinous confirmation of how awful and useless you are, cue being depressed for months (and more importantly, lacking the energy to fix the problem, like being paralyzed). The worst part about hypomania is that the people around you often just see you as being really driven. To others it looks like a good thing. Then you crash and everyone is left wondering what happened. Must've been something huge and traumatic. Reality is, nope, it can be something small and it just...happens. It's a roller coaster in slow motion and there's nothing convenient like a brake pedal to stop it.

lies damnlies hi I hear ya! I've rapid cycling BP it's like living on a rollercoaster. Yes I take my meds,if I didn't I'd def be in hospital ! Been there, done that 12x over many yrs though) Fourtunately I need not worry,I'm retired a few yrs ago. But I hate MI ( mental illness) and the messiness in particular my manic episodes leave behind.....fights w family ...verbal) screaming rows) then comes the shame way later the tears. Yes bipolar shows no mercy, doesn't matter your age,sex,race..... It's purely evil. The only positive thing is when manic I'm creative & get a lot done.....until I crash......HARD Just like when I was a teenager& did speed same exact feeling. Except no more illegal drugs, not even weed it's illegal here anyways. I also chose yrs ago to stop drink, it does NOT make me nice. Prescription meds & alcohol do not mix. So many die that way. I still have some brain cells working,so,I also hate bars here anyway. Used to love the pubs in the U.K. but with Covid weird set up😷won't be flying back there for yrs this rate. Not that I give a shit 💩💩💩🔮Miss it over there haven't been since 1979 Right On my birthday July 20 this yr will be 59 I'm old & bipolar!!! I'm 1/2 English) 1/2 Canadian, live in Canada. FYI At 14 not knowing what was wrong w me but extremely ill,I vowed to join the die young & leave a beautiful corpse" ( die @ 27 like Janis Joplin,Jim Morrison my rockstar idols) but,in spite of all the abuse, trauma etc by all including hospital staff I made it all in one piece to tell my side of my personal story. Peace to all suffers the road is long,it's tough. I'm not going to sugarcoat anything.

This vid has helped so much thank you, I’m currently in the stay in bed stage and have been for 2 days now, I’m not diagnosed but I know I have this or something similar, I love gaming and some days I feel really great about it and could play forever with no sleep and then other days I’m in bed watching Netflix lights off and not speaking to anyone, rinse and repeat. I was honestly unsure if I was being delusional about this until watching this video, they way she describes the 2 different stages is so on point. Any advice about this is appreciated XD

People with bipolar disease only knows they have it during the balanced periods. Trying to convince someone in a maniac state that what they are doing is not normal and is due to the disease is like trying to explain to a door that its a door. It doesn't listen and even though it makes SO MUCH SENSE, it just won't hear.

Fictitious stories is not the same as having the worst bipolar phychotic depression is the worst depression and phychotic mania is highest up people might get .you have to trust your reasoning phychotic mania is the highest up and phychotic depression is the lowest down which is lowerthen major depression. Phychotic mania is higher then full blown mania.
