What is Biochemistry? What do Biochemists study? | Biology |

Join the club: snu.socratica.com/join for updates & monthly newsletter
What is Biochemistry, and what do biochemists study? What is covered in this field, as opposed to Molecular Biology or Cell Biology? The truth is, there’s a lot of overlap in these disciplines. But in general, biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of life.
What’s so special about the molecules of life? It’s a case of emergent properties. When biochemical molecules interact, unexpected complexities arise! Phospholipids form the bilayers found in cells. These compartments allow for high concentrations of chemical reactions to take place, leading to...life.
The four main types of biological molecules studied by biochemists are proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. This video briefly introduces these topics, and each one will be covered in more depth in their own videos.
Our series on Biology is aimed at the first-year college level, including pre-med students. These videos should also be helpful for students in challenging high school biology courses. Perfect for preparing for the AP Biology exam or the Biology SAT. Also appropriate for advanced homeschoolers. You can also follow along if you are just curious, and would like to know more about this fascinating subject.

About our instructor:
Kimberly Hatch Harrison received degrees in Biology and English Literature from Caltech before working in pharmaceuticals research, developing drugs for autoimmune disorders. She then continued her studies in Molecular Biology (focusing on Immunology and Neurobiology) at Princeton University, where she began teaching as a graduate student. Her success in teaching convinced her to leave the glamorous world of biology research and turn to teaching full-time, accepting a position at an exclusive prep school, where she taught biology and chemistry for eight years. She is now the head writer and producer of Socratica Studios.

These videos are one of the most fundamental ones a student should watch in my opinion. The diversity of science and engineering are mindboggling. Unfortunately, so few people have a good idea about them. I think introductory videos to these fields and branches should be necessary in school to show. (As being someone who got introduced to science so lately. My biggest regret is why I didn't got involved or introduced to them earlier) Thank you for the video

This is it. This is what I wanted all along but I never properly looked into the kind of degrees and learning I could get. When I did my A Levels I took Chemistry and Biology because I wasn't interested in the knowledge of physics. The questions I want answered about life are all here. Every damn day for the past few months I've been asking myself what I found interesting in school and it always comes back to Biology and Chemistry. Deep down I guess what I really wanted by choosing these specific two sciences was a subject that would allow the knowledge of both those subjects to be combined into one. And I've always found the pursuit of research towards new medicines, new findings and new contributions to be an interesting career for me so I can't think of any reason not to do this.

Hello ma'am...this is Shubhadip from India...these are just awesome videos that u r making...just the kind of videos some of us were looking for...I personally want to become a really good biochemist, although at present I am a medical student...the subject of biochemistry simply fascinates me to the point where I even sometimes feel like seeking out for everything that happened at the very beginning of life on this planet...so I really appreciate your endeavour in constructing n putting up these videos in such palatable forms...We, the aspiring young budding students seriously require much more of these..So, pls do keep on putting up every single topic of biochemistry and wherever possible, the processes which probably took place at the very beginning of life n all the hypotheses that were put forward n which are presently dominating....thank u ma'am...😊

Nothing wrong with working, getting yourself situated, and thinking about what you really want to study before you invest all that time and money. If only more people did that!! We know so many people who have graduated with degrees they don't really want and tons of debt. :/ Let's make this a great year! :)
