5 Reasons Why You Should NOT Study Biochemistry 🔬

You would like to study biochemistry? Here I give you 5 reasons why you should NOT. Studying biochemistry is interesting, but definitely not for everyone. It can be boring, complicated and difficult sometimes and I hope with this video I can give you some information about the downsides of a biochemical career.
This video should help you in making a decision whether biochemistry and the life as a biochemist is the right thing for you. During my studies many people dropped off saying: "That's not what I expected" and with this video I want to make you aware what you are going to experience in a bachelor/undergraduate program with some perspective into the future. This all might sound that I would recommend nobody to study biochemistry, but this is absolutely not the case. I personally don't regret that I studied it and I even did my Masters and I am going to do my PhD as well. There are enough reasons FOR biochemistry, I just want to give you a more or less realistic view what is going to await you.

I love Biochemistry, it's my life. I don't mind if I have to wait long hours or repeat experiments and to be honest those are the attributes a true scientist should possess. There is no option on whether to study Biochemistry or not because without it no one would understand what happens in living systems. That is say medicine whether human or animal, production of drugs, cosmetics and what have you wouldn't make much sense. Also, there products that are not directly administered to the body yet, there effects on the body can only be explained by biochemical methods. So, a 100 and more reasons to study Biochemistry. Oh! Also show some respect for biochemists that have laboured to come up with your everyday products and drugs also.

Its incredibly helpful to have someone explain the cons of this major specifically. I don't have problems with learning by heart or patience, but I just get scared that what if I can't handle it etc etc. But that's another reason I want a tough major, need to face this fear. I know I can do it, just need more guts ig.

You forgot the most important fact about the industry : Erooms Law... or in other words. the terminal decline of this industry as research costs continue to double every 9 years and productivity of researchers continues to decline. The future for scientist looks very bleak especially since most of the world is aging. As the USA and UK population ages they usually spend less and are less likely to invest their retirement savings into risky businesses like sciences.

Interesting that u mention food science, I actually studied it one semester. Definitely prefer biochem cuz u have much more options!

What a whiner! Dude, if you’re not happy on your current path you should pick a new one. I’m a biochem major, I love it. I make mistakes in research, constantly. I’m always repeating assays. The excitement of making a new discovery and being a part of something bigger than myself outweighs any negative feelings I may have about those long hours in the lab. If you’re interested in biochem I dare say many of the things he speaks about in this video are not accurate and could be linked to his poor fit to this field. Go for it!

The only whiner I can see here is you! I am a biochem PhD student right now working on Leucemia - I know what I am talking about. Back to your undergrad program!
