What is Biochemistry?

Biochemistry is the combination of majoring in biology and chemistry. As a biochemistry major you will take more classes related to chemistry until your 3rd and 4th year where you can choose electives in biology or chemistry. Biochemists are also required to do much more problem solving and math based problems than a biology major, who would do more memorization. Biochemistry majors take a majority of chemistry classes but then branch out to learn more about the chemical structures of biological systems. So you will know more about the chemistry of living things, whereas chemistry majors learn about the chemical compounds of everything. As a biochemist you can go into research and development of new drugs and medicine. Biochemists work with drug design and must analyze how the chemicals within the drug are going to interact with the human body. Biochemistry is also a good path to go if you want to become a doctor, pharmacist, nurse, or dentist. In your later years at college you will be able to take elective classes that also have you lean more towards the biology or chemistry side depending on what you choose.

    Just a note here to encourage all young learners: My girlfriend is currently doing her PhD in chemistry (organic chemistry) and she hardly does math at all in her research (and the math that she does have to do, she easily learned along the way)! I hope that helps! No need to rule out options you enjoy just because you're not great at math at the moment!

    0:33 biology also has its fair share of math. Like, for example, if you wanna find how many daisies is in a field, use quadrats. If you don't know what quadrats are, look it up on wikipedia. Basically, it is used for finding the average amount of living things within an area, and you have to use maths like averages. Next, you have to use a lot of surface area and volume in biomathematics, since the size of living things largely effects their insides and structure. Fields like systems biology, theoretical biology, bioinformatics, and computational biology all especially use mathematics and mathematical modelling to model phenomena.

    My school gives biochemistry majors the option to forgo calculus entirely and instead opt for a condensed algebra-based version of p-chem rather than the 6-credit calculus based version that pure chemistry majors have to take. Would it be a bad idea? Should I definitely just suck it up and learn calculus and take the harder p-chem? I want to go into either biotechnology or drug design for grad school.

    Most schools have biochemistry majors take up to calculus 2, while most biology majors only take up to calculus 1. Some schools have biochemistry majors take up to calculus 3. It really depends if your school sways more on the biological or chemical aspect of the major. Most of the calculus will be integration from what I have seen so far, and will be more math heavy with statistical applications. Also yes biochemistry satisfies most/all pre-med reqs. I would say that biochemistry is a tough major and might be harder to maintain high GPAs so watch out for that! That being said, if you're able to maintain a high GPA as a biochem major, you will be a very competitive med school applicant.

    Watch from 5:30. I graduated with BS in Biochemistry. Here in the US, you must have a Masters or PhD to get an ok job. Otherwise, you can only be a technician with very low pay. Don't use this as prep for medical schools, the math portion is overkill for these, and it's hard to get a high GPA. Study Biomedical Engineering instead. Since this doesn't require Masters or PhD, you get paid higher or at least the same as Master or PhD in Biochem.

    Honestly, no, it's basically a chemistry major with a biology minor; for me the only requirements for the biology part of my degree are genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry I and II + lab, plus introductory biologies which you have to have for any life science anyways. The rest are just standard chemistry courses; o chem, p chem, inorganic, quant analysis, etc. and then calculus and physics.

  • @livinghomunculus657
    @livinghomunculus6572 жыл бұрын

    At most colleges you take chem and ochem as a bio major, as well as the complete biochem series that this video neglected to mention, and instead grouped in with ochem somehow. Chemists love to say biologists do not know the structures of molecules and just view them as circles and blob drawings, but no. Molecular Biology is the same thing as Biochemistry and its a pretty ubiquitous course for a biology degree. Biologists will focus less on reaction mechanisms and thermodynamics but still will learn some. The only difference between a bio major and biochem major is Physical chemistry and chem lab vs. random bio electives and genetics. Of course that does not apply to evolutionary or ecology biology majors, but does apply to cell bio, molecular bio, human bio, bioinformatics, etc. I think this video was describing an evolutionary or environmental biologist or ecology degree program fro the bio side.

With this path (getting a master's), It'll be easier to present yourself as reliable biochemistry specialist for the job industry. Speak with your advisor, and professors, and look more into what it means to work as a professional with a biochemistry background or education. Good luck! I suggest learning math through tutors or even Khan Academy. Once you get the basic concepts of maths in your course then the rest of it is more enjoyable and fun to work out. I was terrible at maths as well until I learned through Khan academy and I understood all the basic concepts, I could then easily work out harder questions applying what I already knew, maths is great when you unlock it. You got this

    Not really. It’s the fact that science degrees are made for pre-graduate level curriculums. At this point most people know you can’t get a very good paying job with just a bachelors degree in the sciences, especially life sciences. And so with that said, it is made for people to go to graduate school. And the problem with this is, the variety of graduate programs are very different. You could go into Organic chemistry and have almost no higher math. Or you could go into something like physical chemistry that requires the higher up math you learned. So how do they do it? They set a curriculum that will set up everyone to go into any field they want. The physical chemist won’t use a lot of organic, visa versa. The organic chemist won’t use physical chemistry. So to keep the field non-saturated they do weed out classes. Such as Organic chem, Physical chem, Calc 1-3, etc. Even though the science field is saturated right now, it would be exponentially worse without those classes. So yes, you might go into a field where you might never use the math again. But keep in mind if you can get through it. It helps you in the long run. Don’t give up. Math doesn’t click for everyone, but learn the rules, learn the fundamentals, always do the homework’s, you can get through it

    5:55 no no no. That is what biologists do lmao. That is not biochem territory. Biochemists focus on how transcription factors and what not bind to DNA. Biologists and Bioinformaticians study gene expression and downstream effects. Very wrong. Whoever made this video seems to believe biology, zoology, and ecology are the same words.
