That was me up until a month ago. Made the naive decision to go to art school, was unemployed (“self employed”) but there were restrictions and inconsistent gigs so gave up on doing it full time, did some jobs on the side but was either abused by employers so I left or the work wasn’t fulfilling so I dropped it. Then comes 2022 with all the AI art bs and I was severely depressed, it felt like I lost everything and my life no longer had meaning because now the art market would be even more saturated than it was before. Now I’m finally in a job I enjoy, literally told my boss to pile me up with more work because it’s been doing wonders for my self esteem. Still very depressed and existential but it does help with the financial security fears atleast

I have a very flexible life, so often I do feel lost and lazy. But this morning, I got up, made some coffee, and worked on my sci-fi novel I've been writing. I could have done some remote projects to earn money or smoked some weed and done nothing with my morning, but in either circumstance, that anxious feeling of being lost would return and tear me apart. When I work on my novel, I feel like I am where I should be, both instinctually as I love writing, and traditionally as I see writing as a longstanding craft and spiritual calling. When I write or create, time disappears and I find myself within a blissful eternity of my own choosing. So to put a long story short, I have found meaning in creation, and no matter what job or situation I find myself in, I'll always be happy if I'm able to write.

I listened to the audiobook of Man's Search For Meaning and deeply appreciated Frankl taking time to talk about unemployment. I was unemployed at the time and I felt like he was speaking about my experience; it really is amazing how laboring not having a job can be, when you have everyone constantly either scolding you for not work, guilting you into doing work for them since "you don't have anything better to do", and judging the work you are trying to do.
