When we deal with numbers in the physical world, we sometimes forget that some physical quantities have a directional quality in them. Telling someone to simply go 1 mile is not helpful. You will have to tell them in what direction as well. Moving from one point to another is called displacement and displacement is a vector quantity. It has both magnitude as well as direction.
