What is a Parsec and What does it mean to make the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs

In Star Wars A New Hope, Han Solo brags that the Millennium Falcon can do the Kessel Run in only 12 Parsecs. Naturally everyone assumed a Parsec was a measurement of Time. But it’s actually a measurement of distance. In fact a Parsec was originally designed by astronomers to measure the distance of stars from our Sun and indicates the distance at which one astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arcsecond. This comes out to about 3.26 light years. So when Han brags that the Falcon can do the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs, he’s actually saying that the Falcon only has to travel 39 light years compared to other who have to travel 59 light years or 18 Parsecs. This was made possible due to the navigational charts downloaded from L3-37 when it died on Kessel. So in fact, Han Solo is actually bragging about the quality of his navigational charts. How about that?

You were right about everything...until the last bit about the charts. Kessel is a planet that exists near a large collection of black holes called "The Maw". If you got too close to The Maw, the black holes would drag your ship in and you would be dead. But how close is "too close"? It depended on the mass and speed of your ship. Imperial ships were large and therefore couldn't get as close as the small smuggling ships, which is why the Kessel Run would bring the smuggler as close as was dared to The Maw. But the closer the smuggler gets to the gravity of the black holes, the faster his ship needed to be to escape the gravity. Han Solo's brag was NOT a mistake; he was saying his ship was fast enough to shortcut the Kessel Run down to only 12 parsecs (i.e. closer than anyone else) and still escape The Maw's gravity.

Good analysis... Knew what a Parsec was but not about his charts 😉

I figured there'd be an out for Lucas if it was a mistake, but I couldn't quite figure out how. Grateful for this video, NEAT!

But the Parsec measurement is using earths distance to the sun as part of the equation. It uses the AU (Astronomical Unit) of 154 million KM and that is unique to the Earth Sun relationship. Starwars has no canon about Earth and would definitely not use that relationship to describe a measure of distance..

It’s not difficult. Whoever wrote the line didn’t know what a parsec was. And when they filmed it, no one caught the error. It’s a blown line. That’s it. It’s nothing else.

@@thesmilingman7576 That’s Retcon. The whole point of the conversation was how fast of the ship was. Not how ingenious the navigator was.

Lol what a bunch of nerds. Lucas threw the term parsec in the script without knowing what it meant. This fan backtracking to « keep the canon coherent » is cringy af.
