What is a perpetual calendar watch? Watch and Learn #13

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's episode of Watch and Learn, we dive into perpetual calendars. This neat little function keeps the date on track all year for you, so you don't to adjust the date from month to month. Additionally, it will keep track of the leap year, even adjusting for the inclusion of February 29th every four years.
We also briefly discuss why leap years are necessary, but also not quite as well known, that some years which should be leap years will not be.
To see watches and clocks with perpetual calendars, check out the selection on our website at: longislandwatch.com/

Bought it since 2012 but didn't know it had this functionality but it is very well appreciated. It's quite a shame mine got black coating on the stainless steel so now it cannot be restored with brushing and polishing.

    Mark I always enjoy watching your in-depth reviews of watches and how to set them up. My question is when fall arrives what is the procedure for rolling back the time one hour on the 7T86 movement for this watch? Is it safe to turn the crown counter-clockwise or will it damage the movement?

  • @Sparks52

    @Sparks52

    3 жыл бұрын

    Doesn't matter. When you set the time by pulling the crown out to the 2nd position, it cancels all alarm settings. After setting the time on the main dial using the crown, you use the pushers to set the alarm subdial to the same time. At the time sync you push the crown back in. The date changes when the subdial time at the six hits midnight (i.e. 24/0 hours), not the main dial and it doesn't affect the date in time setting mode. Even when the alarm is set, the internal IC knows the current time on the 24 hour subdial and it will still change the date when it hits midnight. You're thinking all the day, date, month and year are mechanically driven by a wheel train off the main hour hand. They're not. It's all electronic with the IC kicking stepper or ultrasonic motors.

    Great information. I'm looking for a "nice" one" with these, but they always to be expensive, out of my price range and / or don't have one with all the features that I want (actual numbers, NOT indices, hand applied or not, and that it's not look to dressy!I just don't dig them, AND yes about half way through, I gave the vid a thumb's, and hit the subscribe button!.This one sounds awesome. I've been looking at the Seiko site for a while, and do not remember seeing this. I've been considering a Citizen because, as you noted, the recharge capacity it has, but that's hit or miss. For a little while I've also been considering a Longines Master Collection L2.755.4.78.6 but damn their expensive) Day and date, that really all I care about. With it (Seiko) being a quartz drive, I'd assume that they're fairly resilient? I am admittedly rough on a watch, less so now as recently I've since changed jobs, but still, I'd say fairly a bit rough. Thanks for any help you can give!

I thought I had fixed a couple of days ago by going through the step again but it still does it. Can you tell me what I might be doing wrong or how you would bring the day increment 12 hours back. It certainly isn't as easy to set up as an automatic. Thank you for your great videos and much continued success!

    Didn't know about this model. I've got three of the Seiko 8Fxx perpetuals with 10-yr lithium batteries made between 2001 and 2003 from the date codes on the back. They were introduced by Seiko in 1999. Just replaced the battery in one of them that was made in 2001 - it's the third battery (counting the original). If you do it when it starts the double-tick warning and get the new one in within 3 minutes, it doesn't require reprogramming the year, month and date before closing it up. I've also got a perpetual kinetic auto-relay made in 2013. Provided you don't let it run down completely in long-term storage, it never needs reprogramming. The battery in this one that lasts five years - at best with zero chrono use and near zero calendar use - more like three years in practical use - defeats much of the perpetual calendar convenience other than end of short month - while imposing reprogramming year-month-date every few years. Kinetic is practical if worn almost daily to keep it charged, and solar would be much more practical.

    Can anyone explain what the 6 settings and 5 positions do or mean on a Bulova watch?

    It would be interesting to find a watch that would also compensate for Daylight Savings Time.

    I don't expect perpetual calendar automatic watch has an affordable price. But is there an affordable annual calendar automatic watch? (Of course Seiko 5 should be a great choice if you want calendar (not annual nor perpetual) automatic watch)

    Based on a not very extensive research, for an annual calendar the Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie Quantième Annuel comes in at about US$6,000 and for a perpetual calendar the Frederique Constant Slimline Manufacture Perpetual Calendar comes in at about US$9,000.
