    Yes I've got a couple watches with helium release valve. They're used for saturation divers. We live in saturation chambers breathing helium with a % of 02 in it as normal air becomes toxic at the depths we work.

    There is a Helium escape valve on my early 2000s Breitling SuperOcean blue dial. If I am ever in a hostile Helium environment, my watch will allow me to escape to safety.

    No it fucking won’t. A helium escape valve is when you are returning to a normal pressure when sat diving. “Hostile helium environment” stfu. That single sate,not alone shows me that you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about.

    @@hochspannunglebensgefahr5339 I hear you that why I 😆 🤣 😂 in my earlier post. Such type of watches are now obsolete in saturation diving... waste of time and money to have the helium escape valve incorporated.

    Another very nice and informative video. As of right now the only watch that I have with a helium escape valve is a Deep Blue 100bar dive style watch. It is quite the large piece of steel. Great job!

    I have the Ocean7 LM-8 Chronometer Diver deep-tested to 2000 meters, and it has the He valve similar to the Doxa, Rolex, and Breitling.

    I think some of these valves are non functional on cheep diver type watches. I changed the battery on one such watch. There was nothing to suggest that this was anything more than just a drilled out hole in the side of the watch case, and finished off with a nice shiny bolt on the outside..No mechanism too see at all...If I am wrong, then I apologise for my ignorance

    wouldn't just unscrewing the crown and pulling it out do the same thing? Or are these valves designed to be opened when in the water? If so, how could there really be more pressure in the watch than the pressure of the water around it when deep?

    Unscrewing the crown and pulling it out would just allow water to get inside the watch and damaging it.

    I only have a pocket watch from 1923 that I use as a daily carry because I'm too rough on wrist watches. I've never heard of nor seen a watch with a helium release valve. Just curious, if you dive to great depths a diver absorbs more gasses into their body, by breathing air from the scuba tank, due to compensation of the greater pressure exerted by the water column. They then must ascend slowly to let the extra gasses leave their body and avoid getting the bends. Where is the extra gas pressure coming from in a diving watch that a helium valve is designed to release as the diver ascends back to the surface? I thought the "clam shell" case design was supposed to be like a "diving bell" to withstand the greater water pressure of diving and whatever amount of air inside the diving watch remains constant because it's a sealed case. What am I not understanding? Can someone please help me?

    During normal diving this isn't an issue. Only during saturation diving, when living or working in a hyperbaric chamber with Trimix (Oxygen, Nitrogen, Helium) will helium build up in your watch (basically equalizing the pressure inside and outside the watch). During decompression the helium expands faster than it can escape from the watch, risking blowing out the crystal. Your body is constantly venting, the watch isn't. While you could just crack the winding crown, your focus is usually on other things during decompression, so the helium escape valve was introduced to prevent catastrophic failure of the watch case.

    I watched the video and got even more confused. If a watch is under immense pressure from water on the outside, there's an imbalance of low pressure inside the watch. I would have thought that the release of more air into the watch would neutralise this pressure and prevent the watch from being crushed by the water, rather than have helium escape from the watch to decrease the pressure in the watch more...

    Very true, but the compression is absorbed by the case structure. It's easier to build something capable of withstanding compression than expansion. Helium build up can only occur when you're in a hyperbaric chamber (either above or below the water). The air mixture will be adjusted for extreme pressures, taking out oxygen, and adding helium. Most gasses have molecules made up of at 2 atoms (H2, O2, N2) or more (CO2, H2O, NO2). Helium, however, is a single atom molecule (He), and is a lot smaller than other gas molecules. It also lacks a polaric charge, meaning it doesn't have the tendency to clump to other molecules. It's completely inert. Helium can therefore enter through smaller holes than other gasses, causing it to build up over time in the watch while you're in the hyperbaric environment, up to the pressure of the hyperbaric chamber. As you decompress, the helium expands rapidly, more rapidly than the molecules can move back out of the watch. This creates an overpressure in the watch, which can blow out the crystal (usually the weakest spot of the watch). To prevent this from happening, you can break the seal by pulling out the winding crown. However, your mind is generally not on your watch during decompression, so certain brands have included a one-way escape valve that will open up once the pressure difference exceeds the force of the spring keeping it closed.

    Actually hydrogen is smaller than helium. But it's not an issue in saturation diving. I have an invicta hydromax reserve with a HEV. Not that I will ever use it. But it's there. Lol

    On another KZread video they tested the Russian-made cheap Vostok Amphibia wrist watch (about USD100 ) in a small pressure chamber. Officially it's only a 200m dive watch but broke at 80 bar (800m). Makes me wonder if this helium escape valve is just a gimmick to inflate the price of those luxury watches even more.

    Any depth where you're staying for an extended period of time in a hyperbaric chamber (like a dive bell), breathing trimix (Oxygen, Nitrogen, Helium).

    @@antoniodelrio692 Desk divers generally don't need a watch that can go below 100m. These watches are made to go well below that, and for the few who actually work in such hostile environments a helium escape valve is a must.

    @@bloodymarvelous4790 In my 5 years of diving not one person has wore anything other than a Seiko. Helium escape valves are little more than a trinket in the dive industry as dive watches have been completely and totally replaced with dive computers. Helium escape valves are in no way necessary for 99.9% of the population.

    Only open in the bell chamber. To release pressure and Enter heliun the particules are small Then the o2.

    I think the idea for the screw down style is that it still maintains 50 meters water resistance when it's opened, so you would not open it underwater, only in the bell. There is also the automatic He release valve, which is exposed all the time, but is a stronger one-way valve.
