Your watch doesn't need a Helium Escape Valve

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today, we're going to talk about Helium Escape Valves on watches, and why, statistically speaking, you don't need one. HeHeHe.

    4:25 to the end reminded me of: - Do you know what a duvet is? - A comforter. - It's a blanket. - Just a blanket. Why do guys like you and I know what a duvet is? Is this essential to our survival in the hunter-gatherer sense? No. What are we, then? - I dunno. Consumers. - Right. We're consumers. We are by-products of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty. These things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my knife. Omega. Spyderco. Olight. - Martha Stewart. - F*** Martha Stewart. She's polishing the brass on the Buck 110. lt's all going down. So f*** off with your escape valves and Strinne green stripe patterns. I say never be complete. I say stop being perfect. I say let's evolve. Let the chips fall where they may. But that's me, and I could be wrong (random jackass).

    as a diver, i never dive with my watch on, it doesn't have nearly the functionality of a specific dive computer, i am not a tech diver, but i know a fair amount of the theory behind it, and a watch really just becomes an extra bit of gear to lose, dive computers have long since replaced the need for tables and watches.

    this is a pretty good video and explanation what I want to know if you can help is how and when do you regulate the use of your helium valve because when you're in the dive Bell you would obviously open it because that's your high helium environment but what happens when you get out of your diving bell and you're on the floor of the ocean do you close it before you go down and at what point coming back up do you open it and then during decompression when do you finally close it

    Love your channel im wondering once you are done with your dive and out of the water wouldn't unscrewing the crown breifly release the pressure essentially doing the same as the screwdown helium escape valve

  • @NickShabazz

    @NickShabazz

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well, kind of. The problem is that if it's gonna pop the crystal, it would've done so during the ascent, not once you're out of the water. And also, when the crown is unscrewed, usually, the watch has next-to-no water resistance (whereas with an Omega-style HEV, the water resist is just lowered to 100m). So, it's no problem to just pull the crown if you're decompressing "dry", because you can just do that, but if you're underwater, it might cause issues. But again, solution in search of a problem.

    I don’t even swim down to a 10 foot mark in a pool. So really, any dive watch is overbuilt for my needs. Yet, they are the ones that I like to wear. It’s almost like wearing a Kevlar motor cycle jacket while riding a single speed bicycle. If I purchased items that simply covered my needs for the tool, I would be happy with only a Casio F-91W for a watch (nice watch, btw) or just an Opinel 8 for my knife. But if I’m going to collect something, then damn it all, I’m going to collect it but good. And yes, if that Medford Praetorian Ti comes with TWO helium escape valves, sign me up!

    Professional divers use dive computers. Helium escape valves are useless, as the majority of dive watches never get wet. It is more a macho statement. That's ok too!

  • @Draknareth

    @Draknareth

    6 жыл бұрын

    To be fair the watch with a helium escape valve would never need to get wet. The helium mixture would only get into a watch inside a dive habitat or diving bell so theoretically the watch would never need to go into water but would be under pressure.

  • @Draknareth
    @Draknareth6 жыл бұрын

    We also don't need 600m water resistance either and most of us won't need 15,000 gauss magnetic resistance. There is an awful lot of marketing in watch sales. I do love the Planet Ocean though and that features all three :D

  • @heiko4448

    @heiko4448

    6 жыл бұрын

    I don't need a He escape valve and they are a reason for me to not get an Omega diver. It's too obvious for me that it's a gimmick. But I often work with magnetic fields between 500 and 1000 Gauss. It's good to know there is some reserve. You are right, but I see a difference between water resistance/HEV and resistance to magnetic fields.

It's one of the greatest innovations in watchmaking, and putting it on a watch is moreso paying homage to their history than marketing. What's the use of a Tourbillon? What about a minute repeater? There is none. It's art. Mechanical watches aren't about functionality, and if this bothers you, don't buy mechanical watches.
