What is a Balanced Reed?

Фильм және анимация

This presentation discusses what a balanced reed is, and offers a proposed work flow for finishing reeds worthy of artist performance.
Besides discussing correct side-to-side balance, how to test for it, and how to achieve it, this video discusses the rarely mentioned yet equally important topic of the ratio between the heart or center of the reed and the sides, how to improve that ratio and the results in actual tonal response, clarity, and resonance.

Your knowledge and advice has changed my clarinet playing practically overnight - thank you. I only wish I knew about all of this thirty years ago! 🙏😊

Thanks for your brief comment about breaking in reeds. All the gyrations that people go through can get ridiculous and are largely useless, as you said. And some of the stuff, especially sanding the back of the reed and soaking the butt, do nothing but harm

Hi, do you ever use your ATG system after you have used it once.. Let say, you ATG your reed, then play it for awhile, and then, at some point you realise, stuff is happening behind your nose, ande then sand it again? IF you know what i mean :) Thanks for alot of really great videos

Yes, after adjusting it, you might need to make smaller adjustments if you notice the reed changing

Which ATG technique are you using to work the "middle" of the reed? could you demo this technique?

Actually, Tom, I demo that technique in the reed finishing video I just finished about fixing reeds for French embouchure playing...you can see it, but I don't think I actually pointed it out.

    A Legere reed ......

That's not an answer to the question posed here. But I will say that Legere recommends the ATG system for making needed corrections on his reeds to fit them better to particular mouthpieces.

@@billyboy647, I respect your response. What does ATG stand for? .... I wasn't aware that Legere reeds required adjustments or corrections. I've searched their website and haven't seen anything on that. Do you have a link for that? I'd appreciate it. Also, I haven't used cane reeds for over a month and have been using the Legere signature series for my saxophones. This is also the first time I heard about your system. I heard about the Reed Geek tool that everyone who uses it thinks it's the greatest but I don't know, I have my doubts.

@@jimmyb1133 ATG stands for Against The Grain, since you scrape the reed from tip to vamp. I know Reed Geek say they can adjust Legere reeds too, surely the ATG system can also. I personally can't stand Legeres, much prefer to play a well adjusted cane reed.
