What is a 2:1 Degree? Guide to UK Undergraduate Grades - Study in the UK | Cardiff Met International

Learn how the undergraduate grading system works at UK Universities. With names such as 2:1, first and second class degree, the UK degree grading system can be more confusing than standard percentages and letter based grades.
In this video I'll talk you through the different degree classifications, and explain what you need to achieve to be awarded each grade. I'll explain the scores and averages you'll need, and tell you a little bit more about what each degree classification means.
This video is the latest in my series on Understanding UK Universities. I'm currently on a mission to help International Students better understand UK universities, to help when researching coming to study in the UK.
Make sure you subscribe to our channel to find out when we release new videos about Cardiff Met and study in the UK!
Thanks for watching, and hopefully we'll welcome you to Cardiff one day soon! - Jack

Hi Jack, A query here. I have a conditional offer with the condition being to go through Occupational health assessment. But I've not yet received any emails concerning it. As the UCAS deadline is approaching and as I want Cardiff met to be my firm choice, should I pay the fee ? Will it confirm my place? as on the offer letter it was mentioned that there are limited places. So should I pay my advanced fee now or should I wait for the questionnaires to come and pay after that. Thanks.

Thanks for getting in touch, appreciate your concern here. First of all, if do pay you Advanced Fee Payment, and then you are unable to join the course, you will be able to receive a refund, so you don't need to worry about that happening. However hopefully the assessment should be due soon, there is most likely just a delay due to restrictions due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. It may be worth contacting the Admissions Team though, as they will be able to give you a more personalised update. Sorry I can't help more, thanks, Jack

Even though this obviously isn't a degree that anyone would hope to get, I think it might be helpful to explain what a Pass degree is. At the same time, you'd probably have to get into the concept of a degree with honours versus one without honours since a Pass degree is not an honours degree. Another good thing to get into for Americans in particular would be the way points work in the UK. To an American, the concept of getting a First Class Honours degree with an average of 70 points or higher is going to sound strange. To us, a 70 is either the lowest possible passing grade or the lowest possible "C" grade depending on the school. Also, they would probably want an explanation for why there's such a wide range (70-100) for a First Class Honours degree. My personal understanding of it is that 70-79 is like a typical "A" grade in the US, 80-89 is like the instructor is telling you that your work is so good that it's on their level, and 90-100 is nearly impossible. (If I remember correctly, the highest grade I ever managed to get on a paper was 75.)

Thanks for setting this all out - great insight, especially on how students in the US may view the grade boundaries. As you say, it would be useful to do a video talking about the difference between a degree with and without honours, to help students fully understand a Pass Class degree. I'll look to film one later in the series. Thanks again, Jack

Thanks for getting in touch Arjun. There is no exact comparison, however most UK universities would accept this score as either a 2:2 or a 2:1 - so yes, many UK universities would allow you to apply with the grade. In addition, many universities would accept your 12th English score. Unfortunately Cardiff Met doesn't have any pure Science courses, but best of luck with your search. Jack

Hi there, I'll try and answer your questions to the best I can, however there is likely to be a more in-depth update soon. It is likely that not all classes will be able to be face-to-face in September, however the exact split of online/face-to-face has not yet been established. Any course which includes some face-to-face teaching will allow you to get a visa and come to the UK. You will be able to defer if you don't want to start in September. I hope that helps for now, thanks, Jack

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch. You can apply to a UK university before you receive your final 12th grade. The university will most likely make you a Conditional Offer, which is let you know what grade you'll need to achieve in your 12th. Once you receive your final result, you'll need to send this in to the university, they won't be able to receive it automatically. I hope this helps, Jack

So I'm not hugely familiar with the Moroccan system, however at Cardiff Met a Bachelors degree with a minimum of around 14 or 15 is generally considered for entry onto a Masters programme. A bac qualification would be the equivalent to the A-levels required for an undergraduate degree - the DTS may be equivalent to part of a bachelors degree, but this would depend on the university you are applying to. Apologies I can't offer the exact information! Jack

Thanks for getting in touch! This is quite a common system - often the first year of your degree won't count towards your final mark, but your second year will make up some of your final mark. Looking at your scores and your 30/70 split, you should still definitely be able to get a 2:1 - you'd need to get an average of around 62-63% in your final year. A first would be a bit harder, but still possible! I hope that helps, Jack

@@cardiffmetropolitanunivers7174 I wondered why a 70% would be such an achievement. As you said, many other countries do it differently & here in the states, 70% or above is passing so I thought, why is that so hard? However, you state at least 40% or above is passing. Nowwww I understand. Downside is I was told International undergraduates cannot have a minor child with them which makes no sense. However, they did not ask me my opinion & my 2nd choice does allow it. Just as well, I was struggling to find programs American students can take in my subject areas that were not honours. Thanks for getting in touch. There would be UK universities which would accept this for entrance onto an LLM course. Good luck with your search.

Is it silly to only have eyes set on getting a 2:1 if you feel that is your most realistic degree achievable?

I wouldn't say it is at all silly! A 2:1 is a very good degree, and the degree classification which the majority of students achieve. It's also important to maintain a good work/life balance whilst studying, and aiming for a 2:1 can really help with this. Thanks for getting in touch, Jack

Thanks for getting in touch Fahim, in most cases this would be the equivalent to a 2:2, but it would depend on the subject and university. As it is so close, I wouldn't be put off applying for courses which require a 2:1. Good luck, Jack

Hi Eelam, it depends on the weighting your university gives to each year of your course. Many UK universities focus more on the final year of your degree, so I'd need to know this first. Also, it may be different for a 4 year degree. In your case I'd recommend speaking to your university directly to find out. Thanks, Jack

There might not be a direct equivalence, but it should be either a 2:2 or a 2:1, depending on the university you are applying to. Thanks, Jack

@@klindonraj1654 There is no exact equivalence from Indian percentage to UK degree class. It will depend on the course, where you studied, and the university in the UK you are applying for. Sorry that this isn't a straight forward answer to your question.

Im shocked at the percentage levels....... You can only get 45% and get a pass, thats ridiculous. What industry can you possibly go into where you can only achieve 45% and still keep your job, its farcical.

A first or 2:1 is great, but all education and the experiences you gain from studying and living abroad is a valuable way to spend your time and money.
