What Internet Speed Should I Get

In today's video we talk about internet speed and answer the question, "What internet speed do I need?" for your home internet. I will cover what internet speed you need for gaming and what internet speed you need for streaming. This advice will work well for verizon internet, xfinity internet, fiber internet, etc.
Now I made this video in response to a comment made under my "How to get cheap internet video" which you can see here: • How to Get Cheap Inter...
But the person doesn't like me saying that you don't need a gigabit speed tier. While it's clear that person has never worked for a cable company before. I thought I'd make a video that 1. Explains why I'm a trustworthy source on the matter, and 2. Go over in detail how much speed you need for the most common tasks completed online.

    Always start with the lowest tier you can handle when buying internet. There are no fees to increase the speed any time later, but if you want to downgrade because you bought a faster speed first, they'll charge you a ridiculous fee for doing so. Typically the fee is so high it makes no financial sense to downgrade at all unless it's within the first 30 days. Then the downgrade is free from fees.

    Hey Hannah! Your comment really means a lot to me. Both my wife and I have the exact same situation. Strained relationships with our mother's and both our father's passed away. Mine when I was young. So we're all we have and had to navigate life alone. Financial intelligence is something I'm passionate about and don't really talk about enough on this channel. I'm actually working on a bunch of videos right now on the topics. Especially with the last round of stimulus checks going out. Videos like this internet video help people reduce their monthly expenses which is just as important as making money. If you have fewer expenses, you don't have to work as much to pay them. Anyway, thanks for your open and honest comment and stay tuned for some videos that teach about financial security. Credit, how to build it safely, what type of credit cards to get, how to easily invest in stocks with little effort, how to set aside money for yourself every month to just blow... etc.

    I have been with Comcast for 36 years!!! I now pay "only" $155 for cable, internet and landline triple-play package. But today was the last straw!! Comcast raised my monthly bill by $10.22. Not a big increase, but I'm on a contract! I agreed to a certain monthly amount and Comcast agreed to provide what my contract calls for. But not today! They broke the contract by increasing my monthly rate, so I'm breaking the contract for good! Your KZread video has been the best 13 minutes I could have spent. Goodbye Comcast. Thanks Tool Deals!

Check around on occasions for any other providers in your area. Depending on deals at the time it could save you half each month and give you the same or faster speeds. 6:25 HD is the same as 1080p. 4K is 4-times larger screen size, but with signal compression, mileage will vary. So, 25 Mbps for 4K and 5 Mbps for HD makes sense, 5-to-1.

While on Zoom, and will occasionally be doing various things on my phone I.e. IG videos/KZread/or games. So what would you recommend 400Mbps or 600Mbps. I also have to make calls using an internet calling app, but usually not at the same time as streaming, but sometimes while I’m on Zoom. Unless my wife is in the other room streaming. From what I’m guessing I would need (maybe 100mbps) but I have trouble with my WiFi signal dropping my calls or my zoom going in and out at 250Mbps.

  • @ToolDeals

    @ToolDeals

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question. As far as speed goes, 100mbps (most cable companies minimum is 200 now) would be more than enough. If you're experiencing lags anywhere, that would stem from something else such as, the signal reaching the device you're using. It could be a number of things causing that such as: Router is too far away; wall material (brick, plaster, etc); Router being too low to ground; Router being too close to other electronics; Defective router; etc. I would troubleshoot the router if you have issues. The router should be as far away as possible form other electronics and up kind of high. I keep mine on the bar countertop in the center of the house. But when it comes to buying these packages, always start with the lowest speed. The most demanding thing you can do online is stream video and you don't need anymore than 30mbps to do that in 4K. Each device would need the 30mbps bandwidth, so if two people were streaming you'd need 60mbps, etc. So start off with the lowest speed. It's always easy to just upgrade to a faster speed later on. What's not easy is downgrading to a lower speed. Companies generally penalize you for doing that. Hope this helps!

  • @ToolDeals

    @ToolDeals

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good question! That depends on your service provider (ISP). For cable companies, companies that use coax, they'll require a modem and a router. For companies that use ethernet such as Verizon Fios, they only require routers. So you'll have to check with the company first to see what type they use. You could just call or try to check their website for the equipment they recommend. Every provider has a compatibility list on their site that tells you exactly what equipment to buy. This info is oftentimes buried in the site, because they make most of their money from renting you equipment. So if it's hard to find just do a google search like this: "Comcast modem compatibility list" and it should pop right up. Hope this helps!

  • @ToolDeals

    Well this really depends on where you live. In some areas Xfinity has data caps. If you're in one of those areas, I'd say go with AT&T as long as they have fiber. In most places AT&T doesn't have fiber and those speeds will be trash. Up to 25mbps which ain't enough at all. You guys need a minimum of 100 mbps. 200 mbps would be perfect. Anything over that would be overkill and doesn't give you a better experience; just less money in your pocket at the end of the month, lol. So in conclusion, if you can get AT&T fiber at your place, I'd do that. If you can't, Xfinity will be your only choice really. IF in the event Xfinity does have data caps, you could try Tmobile home internet. It's a flat $50/month. Never increases in costs and has no data cap, but the speeds won't be as good as a cable provider. They're generally around 100mbps, which is much better than AT&T's NON-fiber internet service. Hope this helps!

    Aww man, ok. I don't know if they changed it, and I quit about 10 months ago, but they were talking about that in a meeting we had maybe last May or June. So basically, they don't want to sell that package anymore and they're doing just as you said, penalizing people for having other certain services. It's a way to extract more money out of the customer (their exact words). So it kind of hurts you either way. I would try to cancel entirely and try to get service in a different name. Try using someone else in the house, BUT NEVER GIVE A SOCIAL! You don't need to, just pay the deposit which is generally the first month bill. Me and my wife used to do that, switch back and forth using her maiden name, lol. The bad part is, you'll be without service for a few days though. You could also try calling and try to get someone in the retention center. Their whole job is to offer you something to remain a customer. I've found however, that if there are no real competitors in the area, there is no retention center... Good luck!

    Can someone please share how much on average you pay for the internet service? And what kind of service and equip they have? We pay like $180 (FL) for okayish Wi-Fi and little shitty cable channels, in a townhouse (3 TVs, a ps5, 3 phones, 1 laptop). We have a modem from Comcast xfiinity and apparently it HAS to be connected to a desktop computer (that we don’t even actually use, it’s just there for the Wi-Fi box) and the wall Ethernet cables…? This can’t be right?

  • @ToolDeals

    Are there any other providers there? Verizon? Spectrum? Even AT&T (Fiber though). But yeah, Xfinity HAS to have a modem. Verizon Fios doesn't require one, just a router. But it doesn't have to be connected to a computer, just connected to the cable outlet and regular power outlet, then connected to a router for WiFi. You could also use a 2-1 device that's a modem and router in one. On average, a good price to pay is around $50/mo. Xfinity starts you off at $50, then it jumps to around $100. Spectrum does the same but it usually only goes from $50 to $65 or $70. It doesn't double like Xfinity does. Verizon doesn't do that. Price stays the same forever and they cost $40/mo and the speeds are better. 200mbps download and 200mbps upload.

    So my year is up and there is no way on this earth that I will be spending $80 for internet. I do not even use the "1 Gigabit". It is just me and I am out most of the day because well I work. I do not understand why AT&T only offers 1 gigabit on my apartment when they have their lowest 300 Mbps. So I am hoping Xfinity is good.

    Oh no! It sounds like some rep lied to you. They do it all the time. Specifically with the Gigabit internet. I even have people in comments that argue with me and tell me they NEED it. LOL, I used to sell the stuff! NO ONE but a business with a bunch of employees needs a Gig. It's a marketing ploy. But it also lines the company's (and sales rep's) pockets. Even if you call in the order, someone is getting a commission. So yeah, you could've gotten the 300 mbps. But they may give you a hard time about lowering it. What I'd do if I were you is call AT&T and try to lower it to 300 and see what the new bill is for you. Should be around $40 or so. If it's higher than that, just get Xfinity and after the year switch back to AT&T and get the 300 mbps. (Which BTW, is still WAY more than any household needs especially if it's just you!) Hope this helps!

    8:10 20 Mbps for 4K and 5 Mbps for HD makes perfect sense. 4-times more bandwidth for 4-times the screen size. It's odd that Disney and Netflix are suggesting 20% more BW for 4K.

    Could be a number of things. If you still have high download AND upload rates it could be your device needs to be restarted or your modem needs to be reset. You do that by unplugging it from the wall, then disconnecting the cable from the modem. Let it sit like that for 60 seconds. Then, in this order, connect the cable, THEN plug it back into the wall. That should fix it.

    See previous comment. If it's gaming, it could also be the game's server. You can have 5GBps and that won't help you.

    Could just as easily be latency or dropped packets.

    That's insane! If you can try Verizon FIOS. They have parallel speeds. So if you had their 100mbps tier, it would be 100mbps down and 100 mbps up! That upload speed is really important.

    200mbps is perfect, the most overlooked thing is upload speed. Comcast/Xfinity has crap upload speed but Verzion FIOS has parallel speeds. So their 200mbps down is also 200mbps up!

    At least 15MBPS. AT LEAST. I like Verizon FIOS because it's parallel If you buy 100mbps down, you get 100 mbps upload. Xfinity isn't like that at all. I think theirs is anywhere between 15-50. Used to be 15-25. I'm just giving them 50.

    lmao dude. You don't need a 150 Mbps to game online. What matters most in online gaming is latency. The lower the latency, the better. However, having a fast internet speed will help when downloading very large games and update. I gamed on an 18 Mbps connection for years with AT&T as that was the fastest speed they offered at my house for nearly a decade. It was fine, except for the slow download for games.

    Dang man. I have heard terrible stories about Cox. I'm surprised the service is so bad considering it's cable. I would double check the location of your router, ask for a new modem (or buy one yourself), and if that doesn't work ask for a tech to come out and check the wiring. Hope this helps!

    Just ordered 100 mbps from Fastwyre, which is their lowest tier. As Fastwyre just came to town and I will be able to finally get rid of my DSL 5 mbps service that AT&T was ripping me off for $98/mo with a 2 year contract, that has already been fulfilled. Anyway, 100 mbps I believe should be fast enough for everything I do. As it is 20 times faster than the 5 mbps I currently have and I do live alone. There are no contracts and there is also no charge to get connected to their fiber optics network. The only thing is I have to wait until June to get connected. So finally after years of being stuck with only 5 mbps of piss poor service, I'll get to watch content at 4K and hopefully, I don't know for sure, but no more buffering.
