How to Get Cheap Internet in 2022

Getting cheap internet is easier than you think. I used to sell services for Comcast, Charter, and Verizon, to name a few. Here are the hacks you can use to keep your bill low.
Buy your own equipment!
Motorola is what Comcast uses: amzn.to/2ZQ0qNQ pays for itself in less than a year!
Netgear has a cheaper one but not as powerful: amzn.to/2P1OvZt
Get this one if you have a triple play: amzn.to/37z4rJf (Yes, it's more expensive but you really have no choice in this matter)
This router will be great for most: amzn.to/2Sh9kC2
- First, know this. No company needs your social. So stop giving it to them! The only thing you’re doing it making it harder for you to keep getting good deals. Furthermore, you open yourself up to the risk of them putting stuff on your credit if for whatever reason you can’t pay, or they lose your equipment! Yes, they lose your equipment or “forget”, to check in the fact you’ve turned it in, and now the burden is on you to prove that you actually turned in your equipment. (Hope you kept the receipt!) Those things are expensive too. For a cable box it can be up to $1,000 and they put that stuff on people’s credit all the time even though the person turned it in and turned it in on time.
- Always stay in a promotion. When the promotion is up, cancel, and put it in someone else’s name. So armed with the fact you know you don’t have to give them your social, you can put the thing in anyone’s name. Now some companies like Comcast have tried to stop this as of late and if the disconnecting of services and reconnection happen all the same week they may ask you for a lease in the next person’s name. So, you’ll need a lease showing the new person’s name.
If they’re hip to this and are giving you problems, just go with another company for 30 days. All of these companies have a 30 day money back guarantee, although this can change whenever they feel like it, but I THINK it’s law. So within 30 days you can cancel for any reason and get your money back. So just do that and then go back to the other company or keep the new one.
These companies rarely compete with each other, so you usually won't find two dominating companies in the same area. You might be able to get Verizon and Comcast, or even Google. So if you do live in one of these areas, you can just cancel one service and get the new one hooked up and when that promotion is done, switch back, and keep doing it.
- Don’t believe them when they tell you, you have to sign a contract. YOU DON’T. Just simply tell them, “I don’t want to sign a contract”. It is usually always the same deal, but of course they want you to sign a contract because it keeps you locked in longer and paying more. The contracts are usually always longer than the promotion period, so you’ll sign a 2 year contract, but the promotion is only for 1 year, leaving you with 1 year of high payments. Don’t do that.
Never sign contracts if possible, not for anything unless the contract benefits you. Always leave yourself open to the option of freedom, and being able to switch, cancel, or modify a service or product when you want.
- Never rent their equipment! It’s ridiculously expensive. So, let’s say you’re going to enter into a deal where the promotion is 1 year. If you’re paying $13/mo to rent the modem, that’s $156 (plus tax) that you’ve paid for the equipment. Just spend the $156 and buy your own modem and router. It’ll be brand new, and you can keep it forever and use it with any other cable company.
- Don’t get the triple play or the home security they offer. You likely have a cell phone and don’t need a house phone, but if you do need one, there are companies like Ooma that offer free phone service if you just buy their device. I used them for years. It’s like $3 per month for taxes. Also get a security system that doesn’t require a subscription. Get one that just needs a wireless connection.
Now for me, I’d skip the cable as well. Subscribing to Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime are all cheaper than having a cable bill every month, even if it’s on promotion. No commercials (except for Hulu) and you can watch on your own time, can’t beat that!
- Don’t get the top tier internet. 100mbps or something around there is perfect and if it’s Spectrum, it’s their base package. I got around 130mbps and I only paid $42 per month for a year. Even after that it went to $62 which still wasn’t bad and since I knew I was about to move I just left it at that.
So let’s do the math, Internet $42 + Prime $10 + Netflix $13 (for their mid-tier package you can go cheaper) + Hulu $8 + Ooma $3= $76/mo
So that’s it. Armed with this knowledge you can permanently cut your cable, internet, and phone prices each month.

    Really glad I watched this before signing up! I just left the Xfinity store and the sales rep asked for my SS# and when I asked why, he said it was to "run a credit check" 😒 I must have had this look on my face, so he quickly said 'if you don't want to give it, you just have to pay a $25 deposit that will be put towards your 1st bill". Of course I'd MUCH rather do that! And how is that an alternative to running a credit check?! These businesses are so shady lol and I bought my own Netgear modem/router from Walmart. I do think I signed a contract though...I didn't realize it though😕 Also, in your description you have the same links for both the Motorola and Netgear modems

    Hello. Thank you for this video it help me understand a lot more. My new cable bill is $190/month, smh. I just bought 7 new Roku for my tv's and I am going to take your suggestion on buying my own modem and router from amazon. I really need some help in understanding the landline service you suggested and how to use Hula and Amazon Prime? I have had my landline service for umpteen years and don't want to loose my landline and number. What is the name of the service Uma??? Thank you for your help:)

  • @ToolDeals

    @ToolDeals

    Hi! Thanks for watching. Hopefully I'm not too late in helping you. So yeah, that bill is bananas. What provider do you have? So the Roku's will give you the advantage of turning your TV's into smart TV's. If you bought a TV within the last 3 or 4 years though, you might already own a smart TV and don't need the Roku for it, so double check your TV's capabilities. To answer your question about the phone line, you can get an Ooma. I should probably do a video on this alone! It uses your internet connection to provide home phone service, but it's free! They do offer a paid plan with all the bells and whistles, but you can use your cell phone if you want all the extra capabilities. Always at least start off with the free version and if you feel it's lacking (I never felt that) you can upgrade. But it comes with call waiting, voicemail, etc. You can also port your number over to them when you sign up. You first buy the kit, you can get it from Amazon: amzn.to/37V0bH7. Once it arrives, read through the instructions and it'll explain how to keep your old number. DO NOT CANCEL YOUR CURRENT PHONE LINE SERVICE! Not for 30 days after the port at least! It'll remind you of this, but I just want to say it again. I think it's a $50 fee to port it over, but after that, you just pay taxes every month which depending where you live could be like $6 or so.

  • @ToolDeals

    @ToolDeals

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Sheila thanks for your support! It depends on the location. You can go to www.highspeedinternet.com and put in your zip code and it'll give you some choices. From there you can check out each company to see if they service your home. If the speeds aren't super high, you can balance it out by using hotspot on your cell phone. I know my T-Mobile plan has 10GB high speed hotspot on all 7 of my lines and I only pay $156 per month. That effectively gives me 70GBs and we use that for streaming sometimes. When we watch Netflix, Amazon, or even KZread it doesn't count against our data due to the binge feature with T-Mobile.

    Hey Chris, thank you for this video. I have a question, I live in Anchorage Alaska, do you believe any of the following recommendations would work in Alaska? Also, I may not sure I understood your video in full, when I purchase one of the recommendations, will I still need to have internet from another company in order for my choice of recommendation to work? I am looking for something that will provide my household with full internet access without needing to go through an outsider, if it's even possible to do. Thank you Chris.

  • @ToolDeals

    Sorry for the late response! But you'll definitely still need some type of outside company. I'm not sure what your options are up there. But from glancing it looks like GCI is the fastest followed by Alaska communications. I also see none are REALLY unlimited either. not without spending almost $200 per month, ouch! So it depends on what you do online. If you stream it might make more sense to go unlimited. But I'd just get T-mobile and stream via my laptop, phone or tablet because it's unlimited free streaming with them, and get the $99/mo plan with GCI since that'll give you 400GB's per month at 200mpbs download. Hope that helps and sorry I'm so late! You're in one of those isolated areas where my general advice doesn't always apply fully. but you can still definitely buy you own equipment. It also appears that GCI is a cable internet company.

    That's a REALLY good question Nathalia. From what I've seen no, and I've given up on trying to find anything. I used to use Clearwire 10 years ago when they existed. They were the best during the time. They advertised the same speeds as Comcast, but because of it receiving it's signal wirelessly, then transmitting the signal wirelessly, it was a clear difference between a hard wired line and wireless. Their home modems were a little better but they've long gone out of business. I'm thinking in the future we'll see cheap alternatives. Comcast actually has a really cheap alternative for qualified customers, and Elon Musk will be rolling out a satellite internet that's supposed to be faster and cheaper than everyone else as well. Lastly, 5G should give us options straight from our phones, hopefully they do away with the data caps though. Seems like there's some type of "gotcha" on every front. But if anyone else knows of anything feel free to chime in!

    Thanks for this info CHRIS. Appreciate you bruh. Could you do a video on the difference between cable internet vs Mobile hotspot internet or mifi. I see a lot of people debating that mifi is cheaper then cable internet but not sure about the performance level versus cable internet. Also I currently use Verizon Fios for just internet. I started out years ago with the triple play but realized it was non useful to me so eventually I dropped that and got rid of the phone and cable and just kept the internet. But now My contract expired but I wanna keep the internet but just get rid of the rental equipment and get my own to bring the bill down some more.

  • @ToolDeals

    That's an EXCELLENT idea! I used to work for Clearwire which offered mobile hotspot (MiFi) internet as well as home internet using the same technology, they inevitably went under as it was for people who couldn't get any internet at home but satellite. I'll definitely make that video explaining the difference. Bottom line, if you can get it with one of the major players especially, cable internet is the way to go due to bandwidth issues, streaming, and price. That's a great idea, I'd also shop around and see who else is in your area. If it's Spectrum (They own Cox, BrightHouse, Time Warner, and Charter now) or Comcast you can cancel Verizon altogether, and get a promo with someone else and buy your own equipment. Should bring your bill to around $45 per month or so.

  • @ToolDeals

    @ToolDeals

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Nicole sorry I'm just seeing your comment. But I do! LOL, here's the funny thing about commercial accounts. At least back when I was with Comcast, all they did was give you the SAME service but charged more. That was it. I had a bunch of customers who wanted to get it in their business name, but if you do that, it'll just cost more but be the same service. Before you sign up, ask really probing questions about the speed and any data caps. If it's the same as a personal account, just get the personal account.... UNLESS, your business is a C-Corp or an S-Corp. If it's any kind of LLC, it's still tied to your personal SS# and you'll report the income on your personal tax return anyway, so you can still deduct it as an expense. If it's a Corporation, then you'll have to get it in your business name to legally deduct it. That's why it costs more because they know you'll be deducting it. But it's the same service. Hope this helps!

    Sheesh! Thanks for watching, but absolutely you can add your own modem any time. I just moved (hence the reason I haven't made any videos. I had to rent it the first couple of weeks while I unpacked and found my old modem and router. For some reason I had 2 modems and 3 routers... smh, lol. eBay to the rescue! You also have my condolences for the internet speed. We're getting 200MBPS. But honestly 10Mbps isn't TERRIBLE if you are using 1-2 items on the network at a time. People think they need 100+ but you don't need it to stream well. You just need to make sure a lot of devices aren't online at the same time. I'll make a follow-up video soon. Once we get settled in this house and I'm out of training at work I'll have some more time. But I have some more info on cheap internet to share!

    Do you think 100Mbps is sufficient if you have gamers in the house? Also, our Comcast reps have always REQUIRED a contract with any sort of promotion that I have ever gotten with them. How do you get around that? If you like live sports, you will not get them with just Amazon Prime, Netflix & Hulu, that can be a problem if you have any sports fanatics in your house. I just signed up for KZread TV and am loving it so far. I am cautious about lowering my speed, so that my tv doesn't get interrupted however. I am about to buy my own modem, but don't you need a telphone modem for Ooma?? They are around $200. Btw, this is a GREAT video. Because of the previous owners habit of not paying bills over 20 years and other people not paying bills in their name over the same 20 years (I’m assuming he had people put bills in their name when utilities in his name would get shut off) I had to put down pretty hefty deposits on all my utilities because of his history and my wife and I have good credit. It depends on where you live. What city are you in? I recommend any cable or fiber optic service. Something that can get you at least 50mbps for less than $50/mo. I have Verizon and Comcast where I live now and currently use Comcast, BUT Verizon actually has a sweet deal that I would've gone with had they had it before I got Comcast. $39.99/mo for 200mbps, a $50 gift card, and Disney + free for 12 months... I don't think anyone has anything that good. I don't know if it's a contract though. If it's a 2 year contract I wouldn't take that deal, but if it's no contract? I'd be all over it.

    That's a great question Julie! First, you'll have to go to your internet provider's website and search for compatible modems. Most good providers allow you to search for compatible modems by internet speed as well as 2-in-1 units. That's what I'd go by. After you've found a list. Just look on Amazon for the cheapest most reliable one. Look at reviews to see how people like it, and go with that. I don't spend a lot of money on modems and routers. I've done it in the past and they worked no better than the cheaper modems. For instance, I'm now back with Comcast and I'm using an 8 year old Arris modem. I'm using a good router but I got it on sale for like $40 or so many years ago. The two work better than the equipment Comcast installed the first day! Don't over-think it. Shop for your budget and you should be good. Thanks for your helpful question!

    You can get something off Amazon. I have used Netgear or Linksys with good results.
