Opening it up would be a destructive process as it's held together with the melted black plastic rivets you can see around the circumference. I can say what I'd expect to see though: a circuit board attached to a pico projector.

Maybe a bunch of people could each chip in ~$10 of the ~$250 price and have one sent to one of the channels that specialize in electronics teardowns? (EEVBlog for example) Though the only part that is really going to be very interesting is probably the optics. Like TM said, it looks like a picoprojector with a built-in screen in an unusual case.

You would need a computer to this, and you would need to do some serious programming, but I see a really really cool thing being done with one of these - playing satellites is one thing. Current locations of satellites are easily obtainable as coordinates data. You could click on the satellite you're interested in (say the space station) and it will show on the worldeye, what that perspective is in real time. What they're seeing up there, you're seeing the same thing down here on the worldeye. You could also import data from weather satellites and have them overlaid on the globe. You could fuck around with stars. The possibilities for cool effects are endless, just a question of who's smart enough to do it. :P

From dabbling with the footage for Techmoan prior to the release, I can tell you that it will still need some processing. Any 360° content will have to be cut in two, since this is just one hemisphere and not an entire globe, the entire 360° will look weirdly compressed. Secondly, we found out that since this is a flat LCD screen, it's being warped when projected via a wide angle lens. And since the distance from the center of this lens to the center point of the hemisphere compared to the distance from the sides of the lens to the sides of the hemisphere is longer, this causes flat images to bulge in the middle. As you can see on Mat's dashcam footage. That's why I needed to pinch the images that he's kindly linked in the description. This will compensate for the bulging and the material will look natural across the surface of the screen. It turned out that the standard Photoshop pinch filter at 50% was sufficient. So any 360° will also have to be pinched in the area that's being projected in the center area.

The hemispheric display might make a great Magic Mirror in "Snow White", or I could put it in a cauldron and loop a clip of fire burning for the three witches' scene in "Hamlet". There's so many possibilities for fun and creative use of this little circular display.

I had some kids games back in the day, remember Astro Wars and Caveman? They were consoles you held in your hand. Well I also had a Space Invaders console (handheld) that was dome shaped (screen) brings back memories from then. The Space Invaders was around 1978 and Astro Wars and Caveman around the early 1980's. I am sure you remember. Probably still have those game consoles in the loft.

It's basically a small projector and a plastic hemisphere. You could make your own. The resolution seems fine though for what it is. Inductive power only works over a short distance. Most of the time you're better off with a wire. Or maybe a battery and a charging cradle.

But you still need something that applies a 50% pinch to the image in realtime though, and it has to be from a circular mask around the center because a pinch from a square will warp the picture differently and it won't match the hemisphere shape: eox.no/public/pinch.png If you can program something that does this, it would be very much feasible. :)

The software would need to be a basic image mapping table. You have a table, 480x480, and each location contains an address on another 480x480 map. For each input pixel, you look up on the table where it needs to go on the output image. Then plot it there. Simple as, really. A spherical mapping table would just be a bit of cos and sin. For something like Linux it'd be easy, you could just pipe video through a program.

Maybe you could have a look for one of those kits? You could make a radio receiver, a Morse code station etc. It's not HiFi equipment but it is old tech.

VJ Loops and fractals are ideal for this. Also crystal ball or 3D/VR type perspectives. Great also for ChromaDepth 3D glasses in night clubs, lounges, embedded within tables and other furnishings, funky art night lights, modify the surface with multifinger touch so you can recreate a Tesla ball. Perfect for sci-FI props and developing hemispheric 360 degree games and equilateral video and picture viewing perhaps to show motion tracking outputs. Rif it to a floating waterproof vehicle or a submersible one for use in pools, lakes, aquariums to see how aquatic life react to it. Permission pending O course from aquarium management 😁

For the trekkies, there's always Picard's fishbowl effect as well. Edits: minor text fixes

real time image processor pipeline running and adapting the video on the fly? Another thing I can think of is planetarium software. Atleast some of those have projection modes for using spherical screens. Custom image generator software. First thing to come to my mind is a moving scary eye with a projection software that in real time generates the corrected image and thus moves the eye ball around on the sphere.
