10:56 "We suggest you increase the volume of your sound" because the BBC was then broadcasting on the 405-line system, which used AM sound rather than FM, meaning it would get quieter with lower power.

I know this is a long shot... but anybody know the Tefi song played in the Outro?

Never heard of Hula Hoops. Must be a UK thing. Sure as hell look better and probably taste better than Funyuns.

The Sports products were popular in California, where I grew up. I had the Sony Sports CFS 950 for use by the pool at my first apartment. I was trying to be cool, I wasn't.

Brilliant! My sister had one new, it was in the boot of her Triumph Spitfire when involved in an accident on her way to college and one of the speakers was badly damaged. As a pre teen ,into such exiting devices as music machines, I wrote to Sanyo who were able to supply a new plastic case for me to transfer over the internals and all was good. The car was less fortunate

There are several Tefi recordings on the Internet Archive. I assume they've been enhanced a bit, but they sound remarkably good!

Yeah, stupid sales decisions can kill the best products. Thanks for digging this up! It sure is fascinating. Had to grin at the song titles and product names. Very typical 1950s Germany indeed. :-)

I don't see that the singles were a poorly-conceived idea. It seems to be very straightforward and, of course, it has a distinct advantage over records: its linear velocity does not decrease over the running time of the program material.

In Germany, sometimes you could import the (english) Laserdisc even before it was shown in the theatres... imagine that today! "Would you like to watch Blade tonight?" - "The premiere is next week!?" - "No I was thinking of watching it at home, my LaserDisc just arrived" (@Techmoan, I actually bought my Player in the 90's to play the Arcade Version of Dragon's Lair by connecting it to my Amiga...)

The speed did change but it is still really slow. I recognize all the singers and know first-hand how they all sound. What would really help is to install a variable capacitor and adjust the speed that way. Heck, there may already be one installed in this unit. I'm sure there's a service manual out there, as all Japanese hardware at the time had one. The manual should have a section on calibrating the unit.

I can see it now: Thanks to this series, youngsters and hipsters will discover the Tefi format and there'll be a resurgence (or surgence) in popularity creating demand for working Tefifons. Audiophiles will claim they sound better than vinyl, and old players in rough condition will sell for thousands until some Chinese company starts banging out cheap plastic Tefi players with names like Crosley, Victrola, and Boytone. Then some German company will dig out the old cartridge manufacturing tools and start making new Tefi cartridges, and a few of the hippest alternative groups will issue their latest albums only on Tefi, for like twice the cost of a vinyl LP. I'm looking forward to the comparisons between modern cheap plastic Chinese Tefi machines (that all use the same imported mechanism with the same cheap DC motor found in everything else today) and the true vintage ones from the 1950s! Better get that wow and flutter meter calibrated!

Those singles, fiddly or not, I'm quite impressed with the sound quality. Vastly better than my experience with flexible 7" records and considering as a kid I would just play the same track over and over again, it being a little fiddly doesn't seem like a big deal.
