    What is not mentioned is making the bomb is MUCH more difficult than making an atomic bomb. The antimatter would vaporize the bomb as it tried to combine with the normal matter creating a hot (very hot!) fire but no big explosion. This is the same problem as with atom bombs, keeping the bomb together long enough to make it blow up all at once.

    Not only that, if we ever did find a way to gather antimatter and then find a way to harness the energy the last thing we should be doing with it is making pointless bombs, obviously powering our planet would be the first priority and secondly finding a way to use the energy to travel the stars.

KZread has an automatic system that'll recommend based on watch/search history, which is why a lot people are getting recommended these videos. The problem with these bomb calculations is that they assume 100% conversion efficiency. In the case of nuclear weapons, though, most of the fuel is thrown away after the initiation of fission (or fusion) due to the intense energy release forming a shockwave that blows it away. With antimatter, there is no critical mass below which it won't react with normal matter, but the shockwave would distribute the energy release over time and space -- instead of the antimatter being annihilated within the casing of the bomb at the time of detonation, it could be annihilated miles away and seconds to minutes after initial detonation, depending on how it's dispersed. It would be more of a carpet bombing than a single big bomb. Also, the video glosses over the fact that antimatter is not a mineable natural resource. It has to be made. You might be able to do better than strict thermodynamics (X joules of energy required to synthesize enough antimatter to annihilate with X joules of energy) by inducing radioactivity in normal matter (e.g. through neutron bombardment) and harvesting off any antimatter decay products, but this would still require an enormous amount of energy and would be slow to boot. The world would have to dedicate decades of full-time energy production to have a hope of constructing a "world-ending" antimatter device. (Note that I'm not saying thermodynamics is wrong, just that you might be able to release energy that is latent within substances instead of generating it yourself. Similar to cracking and refining crude oil into gasoline rather than spending a much greater amount of energy dissociating water into oxygen and hydrogen to use as fuel.)

  • @biggpete100

    @biggpete100

    Interesting post. The blast pattern of an antimatter bomb would certainly be different from that of a nuclear device. Suppose you had a 1 kg block of anti-iron. Suppose all you did was expose that block to the open air. The reaction pattern would logically occur from the outside in. Meaning that at time zero, the number of particles that annihilate would be a function of the surface area of the block and the particle density of the surrounding air. Since, per the standard model, antimatter and matter behave the same way, we can assume that this reaction at time zero would send a shock wave both outward and inward.... the inward wave would shatter the block and expose more material to the air. Additionally, some of the air would disappear to a vacuum, because it would have been annihilated. So you would have a chain reaction including fracturing, explosion, implosion, and vacuum filling. Just all very interesting. In a very short amount of time, the whole block would be gone and a massive amount of energy would be released. To your second point, I think manufacturing antimatter is an engineering problem, not a physics problem. Eventually they'll figure out how to do it economically. Probably the best way is not in a particle accelerator, but something involving photon collision. Maybe all they need to do is develop a gamma laser. Manufacturing antimatter is a problem that will be solved, in my opinion. The difficult part is storing it. I almost think you'd need to store it in high orbit. If we start mass-producing this stuff, I don't really trust magnet traps to work 100% of the time.

    Realistically, I believe there would be laws saying you can use an Antimatter Bomb but ONLY if there's a threat to mankind and life in general then you're restricted to using 1 Bomb in 1 Galaxy but because this will be expensive if artificially made including the Antimatter used in it, you can't use multiple Bombs in a short time frame, basically for threats like the one I mentioned but there's also the possibility that an Antimatter Bomb will be restricted to areas away from Solar Systems with Exoplanets UNLESS it again is a threat to mankind and life, something like the Flood.

    Lol, no one? I’ve been saying it for years that antimatter bombs are only some time away from reality. It makes the perfect bomb. And if I’ve been saying it, you can guarantee governments knew 20 years before me. So yeah, it will eventually happen and with economies of scale antimatter can become far cheaper to make. You ever wonder why the US government is cool with getting rid of their stockpile of nuclear weapons? In 100 years they won’t need nuclear deterrents because they’ll have something better.

    The thing is, even if the earthquake *did* slow the Earth down, days wouldn't become shorter - they'd become longer, because it'd take longer for the Earth to complete a rotation. The logic there is flawed. I assume that's what confused the original commenter.
