It's gonna be way less as what if estimates if we'll assume you are an evil sith lord. ie labor cost go way down when you enslave the workers. i feel like if we did build this, we would be so technologically advanced that no obstacles in this video would be of significance.

It would be difficult for one planet to build but for the empire who controlled thousands of planets and trillions of people it would be much easier. Have you ever looked at an ant colony and thought they may be just like us? Any species so advanced beyond us that they have figured out how to travel here and not die is more than that much different from us. Even if proxima centuri (the nearest Earth like planet) housed incredibly advanced alien life that could travel at the speed of light, it would take 1,500 years to get here. Space is full of radiation, so much that an astronaut who is in space for only a few months has a significant increase in chance for cancer. The best we could hope for is that we would be their pets... Because we would be so inferior to them as to be nearly invisible.

If You wanted to build a structure that big then you could just get some self replicating mining robots and sending them to an Uninhabited planets or or moon and you’d have all the resources you needed in no time which would be collected by construction drones to assemble the superstructure and would dramatically reduce the cost of construction.

The "lasers would just go through each other" realization has been around pretty much since the movie came out, but we also have some ideas for producing a temporary singularity by focusing high power lasers on a single point which looks similar to the first part. Obviously, that singularity is only going to be there as long as we're pumping energy into it with our death star, after which it will evaporate rapidly due to its small size. But the photon sphere can be used to collect high energy photons in the tight orbit around the black hole. This level of energy would explain why we can see the lasers. Carefully angling the lasers would then allow you to cause the black hole to evaporate at a controlled rate, shedding that laser energy in the direction you wanted. Why you'd want to do all this, I don't know, as all the energy used to make the miniature black hole could have just been pointed at the planet for better effect. But it would look something like the Death Star's superlaser up to the point of releasing the high energy light which would be blueshifted way outside the visible range.

The problem I've always had with the Death Star is There's not 1 bit of surface air traffic. Nothing. Any mega city in any Star Wars movie has surface traffic of some kind. A megalithic defensive platform of that size would centralize any military operations everywhere and would have massive ship yard and refueling capabilities. Even just in defense of the station. Simply using it as a single laser platform with no military escort or multiple purpose military deployment capabilities is foolish. Looking at it there's never any surface traffic even though it's the size of a small planetary military base.

So we would have a realistic movie of Star Wars.

I feel like money would be obsolete by the time humanity would aquire the capabilities to produce a Death Star. All the pricing is unnecessary.

Not completely and certainly not the case for the Empire in SW. However a large number of the maintenance costs proposed are just silly when used in relation to a civilization capable of building a Death Star in the first place. Seriously, who cares about waste disposal when you can eject anything you can't just vaporize into space?

That's not really true. If Earth was still a freedom type world that means they have to get paid with money. If we were an empire or have slaves we may not need money

What If : "...you could build the Death Star?" Me: If this isn't a trick question, I'd test it on vaporizing all of Earth's toxic and unrecyclable waste. Then ,assign it between the moon and Mars, to stop meteors/hostiles.

Correct, on both counts. Once a tool becomes weaponized. Greed, not safety fuels it. Our species won't need asteroids or aliens to wipe us out.

The death star is pretty cool, but we can probably destroy a planet with much less... With a little bit of antimatter, or if we can reach speeds faster than light, it would just throw a ship at the speed of light against the planet.

Most of the death star's scaffold can be built with fiberglass pylons and sheets and the ablative armor can be made with moon dust and fiberglass resin. Solar panels can then simply be affixed with self-tapping screws. The moon's core can be melted by wrapping the moon in a huge high current induction coil to provide magnetic shielding against radiation and by drawing a vacuum on this molten mass, oxygen can be liberated for the crew and carbon dioxide for the farm sectors. A death star may be to cumbersome for war, but for moving a segment of empire earth to another star system, there is much potential. Ps. To save on the effort of spinning the structure to simulate earth gravity, the outer surface should be angled ridges of alternating reflective and energy absorbing material. That way the sunlight pushes against the reflective surfaces and is pulled by the energy absorbing surfaces to spin the structure like a light powered turbine. The structure's spinning motion, derived from an outside source, will transfer it's motion to the liquid iron core to intensify the electromagnetic radiation shield and on voyages beyond the reach of the sun the molten core can be tapped to convert heat into electricity.

Let me start with this, A "weapon" or, as I would classify it, starship of this magnitude would be just as terrifying as it was beautiful as a platform. In the right hands, humanity could not only bring terrible consequences, but traverse the night's sky, and even prosper greatly, in a way that we never could imagine. A single use of such an incredible weapon would most likely be used in 2 scenarios... Scenario A: the net gain of resources would likely be so enormous, that you could use it multiple times and not even notice the economic impact. Scenario 2: there is a force, of planetary scale so powerful that human existence depends on it. Also, even without an antigravity device, scientists could at that point utilize the kinetic energy to fuel the ships on-board power systems for years. Providing light, heat, cooling, and maybe even fuel if there is a sufficient capacity for storage. I'd love to see an episode of "what if" that expresses this. People cling to the negative (rightfully) so much that it hinders our development at times. Maybe the BFG 10,000 from the Doom videogames would be more reasonable.
