Yes Bruv a long time. Though technology today is really improving but politics will always be there that's why it will really take years before we can explore space. We haven't even explored the ocean enough yet. I think there are plenty of things in the ocean that can really help us understand the space itself and someday it will help us explore it.

@NappyHeaded_ZeroCombs Broke in weeks? Then either this dome was created badly or the people selected sucked. Astronauts are a in space in the ISS for months sometimes without meeting new people. While not being selsufficient, they do live in a tiny space together. Or what about a submarine crew living together for a very long time under water? Which experiment is it you mentioned?

Who loses if this becomes reality? Those scalping us for oil and gas costs (getting heavy subsidies while making record profits). Those scalping us by profiteering from oil wars would lose a lot: we spend far more on military than on space -even such a huge space effort as this is nothing to the cost of an oil war (and somehow nobody asks how we'll pay for those). Those whose wealth is in oil, or in gold in vaults would lose almost entirely, almost immediately. And people ask why we stopped going into space after the propaganda game of going to the Moon. Who makes the decisions, and who pays them?

The biggest thing this misses is that the difference between it and other S.F. megastructures in space, is that this is possible entirely with known (1970s) technology. Note that by the time the first habitat is done (for the workers, for as long as they're up there, not necessarily for life), we're mining the Moon or better then NEAs, and such questions of "cost" or "money" are irrelevant. This ends scarcity of energy or materials on Earth, ends scarcity of things like previously rare or "precious" metals. This ends heavy, primary acquisitive, polluting industries on Earth.

Only if we decide not to do it. The NASA Ames / Stanford studies found that there were no new inventions needed to start, and that the first such habitat for workers at the factories would have been done by 2000 or so. Cost would have been ≈4x the Apollo program: for comparison, during the same time period as Apollo, the US spent as much on cosmetics and large States spent more on liquor, than we spent going to the Moon. This would cost like ≈3 of our CVNs and their air wings and escorts and the logistics to deploy them. Far less than a small oil war or the bailouts we've seen. Note that by the time the first hab is done we're mining NEAs and all questions of "cost" or "budget" or "money" go out the airlock. The profitability of mining NEAs blows away the total world GDP. The stuff is raining down on us and the ones easiest to reach for mining are also the ones most likely to hit us.
