For today's feeding, we will need to modify your usual aquarium into a dining area for the carnivorous Venus flytrap!
The Venus flytrap catches its prey using a rosette of heart-shaped trap leaves armed with tiny teeth. The plant obtains minerals through photosynthesis, while organic matter comes from hunting insects. The leaves of the Venus flytrap contain a plant pigment called anthocyanin, which gives the edges a beautiful reddish hue when exposed to intense and prolonged light. It is believed that the red coloration of the upper part of the leaves attracts and lures insects. The leaves also secrete a slippery mucilage, similar to nectar, which further attracts insects with its scent. The mechanism for recognizing organic prey in Venus flytraps is remarkably technical and complex: the Dionaea distinguishes between the fall of a water droplet or speck of dust into its traps and the fall of an insect, reacting only to the latter.
