What if the 2008 Formula 1 Season was run in REVERSE?

Спорт

The 2008 season was one of the most memorable in Formula 1 history. It was full of drama and controversy, the rise of new stars and the decline of old ones, and an epic battle for the Championship between Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton that wasn’t resolved until the last corner of the last lap of the last race. Four different drivers led the Championship at one time or another, but how would things look if the season was run in reverse, with the Brazilian Grand Prix being the season opener, and the Australian Grand Prix being the season finale? Obviously, it goes without saying that the end result remains the same, with Lewis Hamilton winning the Drivers’ Championship by one point from Felipe Massa and Ferrari winning the Constructors’ Championship by 21 points from McLaren; but it does drastically alter the trajectory of the two respective title fights and gives a new perspective on where Championships can be won and lost. This is the first video in a new series where I shall cover various Formula 1 seasons in this manner. As I’m essentially running time in reverse and cannot change any outcomes, a bit of artistic license will have to be taken with historical facts, particularly pertaining to seasons that had driver deaths. 2008, fortunately is not one that did, and there were also no driver changes or transfers, if you ignore the collapse of Super Aguri four races in, so this is a fairly easy starting point. With that out of the way, let’s see how the 2008 Formula 1 season looks when run in reverse.

I love how this just creates extraordinary nonsense. From turning the Brazilian GP into a somewhat unremarkable race, crashgate happening right after Alonso got a win on merit, to Torro Rosso reverting to a 2007 spec car in the final third of the year.

  • @potatogirlcultist19

No, Toro Rosso reverting to the 2007 car makes perfect sense, since Red Bull are trying to sabotage them by not donating any of their chassis to them since Toro Rosso are ahead of them, and it would be embarrasing if they lost to their junior team. However, they just look like even bigger clowns because Toro Rosso still beat them even with the sabotage.

Just in the same way Lewis could’ve won in 2021 if he didn’t go straight on wt the restart in Baku. These things happen. The only reason this stuff is a debate, is since the other driver involved in this is Lewis. If any other driver had beaten Massa to the title, in the exact same circumstances, the discussion around this would be different. I’m not saying Massa wiudlnt have done the same thing had it been another driver, I think he would, but people wouldn’t be jumping to defend him. The only reason people are doing that, is out of hatred towards Lewis. Which is why the same people who (rightly) tell Lewis fans to get over 2021, are the most vocal supporters of Massa in this situation. It’s blatant hypocrisy.

I realised if you reversed 2006, Alonso wins the title a race early in Malaysia, even with Fisichella winning. 2006 turns into a season where Michael was leading for most of it, but completely bottles it in the final 6 races. Massa & Button are also early season contenders. Reverse 2009 and Button wins it in the final race in Australia after completing an amazing late season run like Kimi in the real 2007 season. Whilst Kimi's reversed 2007 sees him dominate early on, only to hold on for dear life like Button's real 2009.

i like this idea of reversing a season to see what drivers and teams get surprise leads on the standings, just to plummet down as real life events dictate. I would wish to see what artistic licenses you could do on the seasons with major regulation changes, such as 2009, 2005, 1994 and such. It would be a challenge to explain cohesively why some teams suddenly get banned components fitted on their cars later on and some drivers miraculously coming back from career-threating injuries or extraordinary situations off-track. I trust you with this Peter 🙏

This stuff creates some craziness for any season that was actually competitive tbh 2021 would honestly feel the same, not even kidding 2019 would have looked like 2022 for Ferrari 2018 would have been Nigel Mansell 1991 for Vettel 2016 Hamilton win the first 4, and then have Rosberg pull off an absolutely incredible comeback after his bad luck in Monaco Rosberg wins 2014 if the final race was double points 2012 would have had Red Bull start bright then Ferrari’s pace drop off an absolute cliff 2010 would have had Vettel start the season really well, but suffer that DNF in Australia and then the drama of his Red Bull failing him in Bahrain 2009 would have had Button win 6 of the last 7 to absolutely steal the title 2005 and 2006 would be a seriously impressive Alonso comebacks

F1 2003 in reverse would be fun! McLaren begging Coulthard to slow down to try and make life difficult for Schumacher and coax Raikkonen to his second win on the bounce/of the season and nick the title. Only for Coulthard to reject the notion after years of being told to slow down for Finnish teammates.

Important points to consider 1. A brief summary of Winter Testing 2. Displaying calendar dates for GP's (eg. Australia, October 31-November 2 2008) 3. Lewis Hamilton 10 place penalty in Monaco for his Canada crash 4. ITV F1 2008 Intro would've had Anthony Davidson in the final 4 races of the season 5. Due to the reverse calendar races like Canada, Spain and Australia would've been a lot cooler 6. Martin Brundle and James Allen wouldn't have gone wild after Hamilton passed Glock in Brazil 7. David Coulthard special livery for Australia as he ran a special livery in his last GP 8. Hamilton & Rosberg in Australia would've had an even happier moment post race as Hamilton would've been champion 9. ITV F1 live viewing figures for Australia wouldn't be as high as Brazil due to the race start time and because Hamilton had an outside chance of the title 10. Canada would've been the first race after the summer break

Reverse 1976, where it turns into James Hunt dominating the first half the year (although you'd have to pretend Lauda got hurt in Monza rather than Nurburgring), but Lauda nearly completes an amazing comeback from his injuries for the title. Hunt gets slammed for his cavalier playboy lifestyle like we've seen with Kimi. Reverse 1979, where Alan Jones is a title contender, but fades off horribly.

You forgot to mention how BMW Sauber announce in midseason that they're going to put their entire focus on the 2009 car after an average start only for their results to take an inexplicably amazing upturn starting with their win at Canada 😉 I forgot how brimming the 2008 season was with people getting on the podium. F1 hasn't been anywhere near as exciting as 2008 since that season

In the first two cases it would have been interesting to see the track you choose for the GPs, who would have won and how the title fight might have changed.

1994 would require a lot of creative story telling. Like that amazing start to the season for Nigel Mansell then being dropped for David Coulthard... the two fatalities and other injuries like Wendlinger at Monaco will have to be explained away in other ways... Hill would look like WDC favorite up until the last four races. Where it all falls apart for him.
