dude you absolutely nailed Kirk's solo technique.... but ya, i think i will stick with no solo st. anger, because thats how i grew up and i loved this album actually, also i am a very "no to change" guy, so I like how it was in the original... steel snare, drop C tunning, raw vocals, wanna be Nu metal, the Frantic-tic-tic-tic-tic between the band members.... that is the sound of st. anger. fellas, agree with me or not, but that is St. Anger! great play bro, absolutely loved it
I'm one of those rare guys that like St. Anger. These solos would make it 10 times better.

I would also say in some parts, the tin snare could actually add some cool texture _(such as in the intro/breakdown from St. Anger. I think it sounds cool and percussive there)._ The problem is that it is *all over the record* and so overused, it affects the overall drum sound negatively. I don't actually hate it by itself. I also like versions I've heard with "proper" snare. To me, the tin snare sound could be neat if used _sparingly_ as an _effect_ - rather than the overall sound.

@@dl2.504B It’s funny because it’s true. Kirk told James and Lars multiple times in their documentary, Some Kind Of Monster, that not having solos on the new album (Saint Anger) just because not having solos in metal was the “in” thing at the time, was f*cking moronic. Remember this was back in the early 2000s when deathcore blew up out of nowhere. But those shitty early deathcore bands didn’t avoid solos because they weren’t hip, it was because they couldn’t play any. Why any band with such a renowned lead player would suddenly decide to not let him fulfill his role just to be like, “Hey, fellow kids!” is beyond me. 🤦🏻♂️ f*cking hell.

I definitely enjoyed this more. The fixed snare drum helps.
I love how much love St Anger gets in the comments. I remember in 2014 at Rock am Ring (German music festival), Metallica had this weird thing going on for their tour, where you could vote for a song via short message. There were three songs you could choose from and one of them was St Anger. Well, the crowd actually voted for St Anger. When they showed the results of the votes, the whole crowed cheered and James said in a really sad voice: "Yeah, it's an underrated song." Man, I felt that. And I agree. It IS an incredibly underrated song and album. Boy, let me tell you, 'tallica gave it there all that night. Them playing St Anger live there was amazing!

St Anger (Imo) is one of those albums that have no gray area. The parts are either absolute musical genious or smelly old pants. Glad they have revised the title track for live shows, sounds amazing.
I love that Kirk adds guitar solos live during these songs. I think he's played solos live for Frantic, St. Anger, Dirty Window and Sweet Amber but i maybe wrong.

A piece of music becomes "listenable" to the human ear because of the riffs, hooks, rhythms etc. Solos are just the face-melting cherry on top. You cannot make an actual "song", that only consists of one 5 minute guitar solo played by one guy. It needs the riffs, rhythms and so on. And I say that as a shredder myself. If you listen to these songs with Pete's solos and like them now you pretty much always liked them. Because solos don't make songs, riffs make songs. And just to be clear, I do think St Anger was and is a terribly underrated album. I personally think it's one of the weaker Metallica albums (along with Reload; I like maybe 2 or 3 songs off of Reload, although I absolutely love Load, it's an awesome Rock/Hard Rock album imo). I don't think St. Anger is a bad album, however. Again, just really underrated imo. People focus too much on the snare drum. I actually think that snare sound does work really well in the title track.

@@ThorsShadow A lot of St. Anger's problems go back to the terrible arrangements. Adding solos would have done a fair bit to decrease the pain of how long and repetitive the songs are. It almost looks and sounds (based on the way the album is written and Some Kind of Monster's depiction of the choice to not do solos as being a sudden change in the middle of producing the album) that the songs were written to have solos and then they just never recorded any - without altering the songs, leaving behind massive stretches of the same riff nearly on loop. Practically none of those songs needed to 5+ minutes long and all of them are.
The solos had a true Metallica vibe. You fkn killed this dude!
Your guitar tone was incredible in this. Thank you for making the album listenable
Absolutely nailed Kirk in every instance. Great playing, man!

I do, but feel like it was overused. I'm of the opinion that the tin snare makes a cool effect in some areas and belongs - but shouldn't have been the overall snare sound. But it made a positive impact effect wise in areas, such as St. Angers intro and breakdown sections.
Kirk is now even more pissed off about his lack of solos on St Anger.
Maaan if St. Anger had been made with those solos and the sound of the production you did, it would have been a damn gem of album
Now that's some incredibly low action on that guitar :O

I'd forgotten that there were tracks other that St.Anger and Frantic on there tbh. Still, good work Mr Cottrell!!
Metallica actually dabbled in adding solos to the St Anger songs all the way back in *2003* - if you watch any of the performances of Dirty Window during the Madly In Anger With The World tour, Kirk has a solo thrown in! I remember this vividly as I saw them at Earls Court in December 2003 being supported by Godsmack, and was genuinely shocked when the solo came out of nowhere They also started adding a solo to St Anger during some 2019 performances
I'm a big fan of St Anger 2015. If it had these solos on it, it would be even better.
