What If Keith Moon Had Not Been Taken Away? Vol V - Eminence Front - drum cover

Музыка

I thought about how would Keith approach this for a while. I took into account that Glyn Johns was involved with the It's Hard album and he was instrumental in getting Keith to play simpler on the Who Are You? album. I then decided it would be something akin to Slip Kid, a simple beat with a tom strike after the snare with the bass drum as he seemed to favor this move. Also in studying Keith I see a pattern without a pattern, what I mean is he will do a pattern in a verse or even one bar and alter it and alter it where most drummers would have a set pattern for the verse, chorus bridge and they will repeat each exactly. Then what I did was I listened to this song once as if Pete had brought in a demo and then played it and this is take 1, a one off so to speak as Keith would.
Hope you like it, if not it's cool, I'm just experimenting.

I often wonder what would have happened had he not been taken away myself. I would love to have heard what he would have done with "You Better, You Bet", "Another Tricky Day" or even "Athena". No offense to Kenny Jones, but he was more of a timekeper, but Keith not only turned the drums into a lead instrument but to me he was more into playing with the melody of a lot of songs.

aye, I did a bunch off Face Dances -Vol I - IV, that's exactly what Keith did, he never had any real drum lessons from a strict teacher like most of us who tell you "you can't do this, you don't do that", he did have some music lessons in school, played a horn and took lessons from Carlo Little, but he was a AAAA personality with a streak of ADD and lord knows what else so he played what he wanted how he wanted, he was very melodic, he followed the guitars and played with and around them. Some of his style stems from the early days when they were a 3 piece power trio and with 3 piece the drummer fills a lot of voids like Cream, Hendrix, early Grand Funk RR and he seemed to grow off that. There is definately something to be said for people that did not go to college for music and played from the heart because they make the best music, they aren't bound by rules.

  • @905Alive

    @905Alive

not really, during the Jones era Pete was still writing in a style for Keith's type of playing to a degree, WRU was transitional, Pete and Glyn Johns worked very hard to get Keith to drum simple and use the hi hat more, 905 is a signature of that, also a lot of Keith's work is over dubbed and spliced, I'm Free for example actually has Pete and John playing drums to lay down the groove and beat and Keith played over it, it is also rumored that Nigel Olssen (Elton John) did a bit of work on By Numbers and Slip Kid definately has 2-3 drum tracks on it, a basic beat and percussion over

The Keith style brings a totally different swing that appropriately darkens the mood for this supposed dark song and makes it better. It sort of adds a dark shadow to it. Kenny did a seamlessly clean part with great feel...along with a brighter, glammy mood which also made the song great. I like the Keith version better.

this was one of the first songs i covered when i refurbed an old Pearl Forum Series set. when i got a score for this song (drumscore.com plug), and listened to an isolated track, i was surprised at the fact that the drum part had far more complexity and variation than one might think with a casual listen. BUT - other than the end of Song is Over, i've never covered Keith Moon. it would take too much effort to cover it perfectly, if even possible, because of he constant ad-hoc improv nature of the way he drums. who knows...i might try one one day. i like what you did here though. good experiment.

With that said, this song would either have been written differently or Keith would have mucked it up a bit. def hard to say, this is one of the songs that is a Who song, like WGF and You Better You Bet and many others it revolves around an organ segment using apreggio, to complete a loop that continues throughout the song, I have never found any info as to when he wrote it, or started the concept, many songs on Face Dances def had been written before at least partly and had Keith's drumming in mind, writers like Pete have a ton of songs and ideas, many not complete that they come back to, a song like this sounds like an idea from before, the rest of It's Hard doesn't, and subsequent Who material off the last 2 albums doesn't sound like them at all.

nope, listen to WRU, the entire album was Pete and Glyn Johns working to get Keith to play less, 905 and Had Enough as well as Slip Kid are prime examples

I love your interpretation of what Keith would of played. Yet when we hear what Pete said in recent years. Keith if he didn't pass away, he would of probably faded away in a pathetic fashion. Just listen to the Who are You record and its not the same drummer from 5 years ago who blew minds with his ability to inspire other drummers....

Thank you Joe, it's hard to tell the future, remember Pete and Glyn worked Keith to play simpler for the album, I think if he had made the tour it could have gotten him back in shape, but he seemed destined to implode, so sad

Keith's drumming on Who Are You is brilliant and inspiring and in no way indicative to me of a drummer on his way out. Maybe it took him more time and effort to lay the tracks down, but it's all classic Keith to me.

I would have to agree with you. It was difficult for Keith to stay sober for a length of time. The videos of him playing in the live studio setting year before. He was sober and he was on fire!

It has been stated on a number of times that Pete said he would of fired Keith eventually. He wasn't up to par and was wasting away. He barely played on Who are you. Basically wasting studio time trying to play simple parts on the songs. He was incapable of going on tour to promote his last record. He drank his talent away. And that is really sad. Very original drummer.

I agree, at first I think we all had a shock, this was worse than BOC firing Albert, Keith was dead, the first clip I saw of them was before Face Dances and they opened with Kids Are Alright, and it was superb, when Face Dances came out I think we all still had an attitude but when I drummed to it I found there was challenge there and much of it is possibly Kenny's best recorded work, what we didn't know then was Pete and Glyn John's had worked Keith on WRU and Kenney to play simpler to match the times, the one thing about Jones I will never understand is the way he played Baba, it was all wrong, no cymbals, I also feel it was wrong for the Who to let him go, he was the right fit, Simon was too fusion, too perfect and Zak is great live but on the album falls flat, again, the only song he does on Endless Wire is Black Widow's Eye's, the rest is Pete Huntington who is the drummer for Pete's friend's Rachel Fuller and while he may be a great drummer everyone forgot one thing,.........Keith's rage and emotion, he drove their songs, he knew when to come up, down, lay back, for him it was a natural thing, an emotional roller coaster ride and that's why Tommy and Quad are so great and Endless Wire has no story, there's no emotion there. My video series titled What If Keith Moon Had Not Been Taken Away? is in no way meant to be down on Jones, just an experiment to see what it may have sounded like because through the next 2 albums Pete was still writing somewhat based on Keith's drumming, you can hear it.

never liked this tune it goes against everything the who were and mooine i am pretty sure would not be playing like this .Those who bitch about his drumming on who are you are losers as well the poor guy was having health issues during the whole recording process as documented and as a drummer i still love every track he played on .IN the end he lived up to his role in the who .when he died the band died until Zak surfaced .To me this the worst who tune ever recorded the energy is non existent and kenny being shoved a song being told to play it safe and i always was bothered by that knowing kenny was and still is a monster drummer .no disrespect here but people who say they study keiths playing is amusing and futile there was never and still not a drummer like him he was not meant to be studied he was meant to be an untouchable legend .

Well you don't the Who or Moon very well, first off this is a typical Townsend song for the time, using a keyboard arpegio backbeat to set a pattern, like Baba, and over time with each album they and Pete evolved, they never did the same exact style twice, as for Moon he like many drummers, great drummer have always influenced people, Moon himself was influenced by jazz greats and Carlo Little, like I say, if we don't get influenced and learn and then adapt influences to our own style or personality music will die and it's why modern music sucks, it's all dead tech no robot drum beat crap.

Quad, drummed to that album and music for 40 years now and my friend jon fishman played the entire album on tour with the band Phish for a tour ,his words were you have to be fit as hell to play it ,i reckon it was because moonie was tranked out of his brains on horse pills and brandy IT was moonies habit that pushed his drumming over the edge i have no doubt about that .The older i got the more i realized that and started looking to other drummers like jeff porcaro and Gadd for inspiration as much as i loved moon and he was the reason i started drumming in the early 70s the more i came to see what he was driven by is what killed him .personally i look toward other genres of music like jazz and other cultures theres enough out there to digest and still at my age evolve into something i never though possible electric drumming has allowed me that as well but i will say Quadrophenia might be the best work of rock drumming to this day i ever heard .Thats mostly because of pete, but moonies drumming especially on the rock is so powerful it hits the soul like a ton of bricks .

also remember Quad was done over many takes over a long period of time, Moon could never do it live and thats why they abandoned it, they altered that tour to cover some Quad, he never played it straight through, I have and it's a ungodly powerhouse aerobic workout the most intense I ever had and I've mountain biked and kayaked, etc etc, as whole it is an incredible piece of art
