Kieth Moon was a legendary drummer. He was the Hendrix of drum players. No one is wired like him to be able to play like him. His playing went great with the Who's music. It's hard to picture him playing with another band.
KEITH MOON put the drums up front so you had to notice him. He was the greatest drummer ever ever no body can play like MOONY
So glad you used a '65 who song. Moon's drumming that era is criminally underrated

you can play the beat he lays down, but he fills like no one else. a one man band.
I think Moon took it to another level with Quadrophenia--the entire album. In many tracks, he basically played "lead guitar."

@@Spreadsheeter I love the track "5:15". Moon plays "train" not drums. Sounds exactly like a slam door commuter train going down to Brighton. 😁 I really miss those old train carriages, you could stick your head out the window. Not like today's claustrophobic tin cans. Every time I miss them, I can play that track and listen to the wheels bumping over points in the characteristic rhythm. Da-dum, da-dum...
Your Keith Moon style solo was fierce. Bravo!

When you played " The real me " it gave me goosebumps , like you were channeling Moon. Quadrephenia is a special album for me because of the meaning implied to each piece tells the story at a time when Pete was concept driven, but also I feel they were at the peak of their recording prowess on this album . Love reign over me is still one of the best songs ever . Thank you man. Keep up good work.

Great piece. For me what made Moon such a great drummer was his energy, and his live playing, where he improvised more than just about anyone. Young man Blues one of the best examples of that. Also the way his playing style was almost a lead guitar in terms of the contribution of the drum track towards the song. Too many today have forgotten Moon and The Who

Yes, that would be more of a talking video. My ones are more about playing
Great analysis of KMs playing. I never thought of ranking his compositions by difficulty... To be honest, I never thought of attempting to play them as compositions!!! I always just banged along with the song, when I was a teenage Who fan in the 1980s... And the "Young Man Blues" seems to have been the highest difficulty! Great work making sense of Keith Moon, and his drumming. The Jazz influence is interesting. Have you thought of Elvin Jones? The way Moon supported Pete Townsands' guitar leads reminds me of Elvin Jones supporting Ornette Colemans Sax playing. I think they called it "Free Jazz"... I don't know who Carlo Little is. I suppose you could say that Hal Blain influenced Moon as far as drum set up, and tuning w/o overtones. Early Keith Moon recordings have some pretty ringy toms! I have read that Moon and all the contemporary drummers took lessons from Jazz drummer Jim Marshall who also made the loud guitar amps Towndsend used. IMHO en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Marshall_(businessman) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlo_Little

Although you say his special weapon is the kick in fills, what I like most about The Who is the fast endless rudiments. Therefore, my two favorite videos are Mitch Mitchels and this one. What are your tips to develop this style of drumming? Of course I do practice rudiments and I nail double strokes, flams, drags, and so on; but how can I practice to play it naturally and intuitively in songs like keith, Mitch, and you?
@Pietro.Valente
Жыл бұрын
The key is to play rudimental drum solos like the book of Charley Wilcoxon "The All-American Drummer. 150 rudimental solos." When you need to make them sound good together you are really perfecting the rudiments. Then slowly they will become part of your vocabulary.

These are great. What about Happy Jack, Fortune Teller> Tattoo (talk about controlled chaos, the rolls in Tattoo go straight into delicate cymbal taps), I Don't Even Know Myself (crazy fills into wood block, and acting like a loon doing it), and Amazing Journey> Sparks? I think apart from the insane fills themselves, is how on the beat he really was, and how he could switch dynamically from a herd of elephants to mice on a tile floor. My favorite drummer, and it isn't close.

Been a WHO fan since 1970; yet musically incompetent. I liken Moon’s drumming to a rhythmic avalanche. How do you replicate that: it’s one of its kind; in the moment and both destructive and impressive!
Moon famously hated performing drum solos. The Who set him up during a concert once as they stopped playing to allow for Keith to do a solo and Keith just stopped playing also. lol

I agree a Ringo video would be good. In my opinion he is overly criticized because he wasn't as flamboyant or virtuosic as so many others. But he was key to defining the sound of one of the most legendary bands (if not THE most legendary) of the classic rock genre. He's an outstanding example of a drummer who played THE SONG, opposite of a drummer like Buddy Rich who thought every song was a launching point for a self-aggrandizing drum solo.
