    Insurance cost can vary a lot depending on which insurance company, type of bike, and age of the rider, and location. I'm in my 40's now, and I have insurance on my RS660, a $12,000 bike, for only $400 per year. And that is full coverage at maximum coverage values (I think $300,000 liability coverage). However, in my 20's, some companies wanted over $3,000 per year on a full fairing sportbike that had about a $6000 value, which I just couldn't do. My solution at that time was to get naked bikes instead of the full fairing versions. Choosing a bike with a smaller engine size might also help. So it's probably best to shop for insurance before deciding which bike to buy.

    If buying your first bike, buy a used one. Purchase price is cheaper, sales tax is cheaper, property tax is cheaper, insurance is cheaper, it adds up. Learn to do the maintenance yourself. Even installing your own tires isn't as hard as you might think - there are plenty of videos showing how to do it, but there is a learning curve to all of it.

    The most important thing about getting a second hand bike as your first one: you are a clueless moron and will do all sorts of stupid shit to it. You will drop it. You will abuse it. You will (hopefully not) crash it. Above anything else, your first bike will be your learning tool, wthether you want it or not.

    I got screwed buying used for my first purchase I researched and negotiated over dozens of options not rushing into anything. Saved up to pay the whole thing in cash. Thought I did everything right when I met the guy and his family I was a little prejudice thinking they were good people and there was no way I could be getting scammed. The next day the bike was acting up and he told me I should take it to a shop😂. There’s only so much you’ll actually know to look for as a beginner rider and while you may feel dealerships are ripping you off at times there’s nothing like a factory warranty. I’ll be buying another bike this winter for next season but the little I thought I was saving buying used ended up costing me thousands of dollars and an entire season of riding. Not saying everyone has the same experience and I’m sure a lot of people have bought used bikes that worked perfect for years but to say buying only either used or only new is best could not be further from the truth

    @@Roe0211 Yeah it's a risk. I've bought used 6 times and new 6 times. When I buy new, sometimes I've opted for the extended warranty, which is transferable to the next owner, that way when I go to sell it, the buyer can feel more confident that they are not getting sold a lemon. 2 of the used bikes did eventually develop engine or transmission issues, but only after I rode them myself a lot, which could happen to a new bike too. Even with a factory warranty on a new bike, it can be a time-consuming hassle to get anything fixed, and it will expire eventually, so you can still get screwed. I recently had an issue with my RS660, for example, which I bought new, and is still within the original 2-yr warranty. Cam chain tensioner rattle. Took the shop 2 months to replace the cam chain tensioner, something that I could have done myself within a week. And then when I went to pick it up, cam chain still rattling, they didn't even really fix it after all that downtime. If you buy new, and then have a major issue after the warranty is expired, you could lose more than you would have spent on an entire used bike. Do you know specifically what is the problem with the bike you bought?

    @@adamharnois7072 engine blew a piston it’s was a 21 z400 so I paid 3 k spent about 4k with driving to pick it up expenses I made in anticipation for the purchase new sticker for a 23 would’ve been 4.5 so maybe just under 6 grand ball park out the door for a brand new one from dealership. I talked over the phone with the guy who sold it to me and while there were concerns mostly were cosmetic which wasn’t an issue to me as I just wanted to learn and get started riding, I made a long drive to pick up the bike. It’s wasn’t until I called back the following day of the purchase that he told me of other issues. For me personally a beginner looking at entry level bikes what most would classify 500cc or below I just don’t think you’ll find yourself taking the loss from a dealership. Most of these class of bikes are under 6000 dollars especially if you can find a model at a dealership that is a couple years older. With that little of an investment you gain so much in terms of experience and knowledge in just a year or two. Then when you decide to buy something bigger you go into deals with experience knowing how a bike should ride and feel instead of just numbers and generic questions. I’m sure if everything would have worked out I’d be more biased towards buying used but it definitely ruined my first bike experience saving up for something i really wanted only to buy from someone I shouldn’t have.

    to give an idea of how much insurance can range I pay $6 a month for my KLR650 and the most I ever spend was $120 a month on a 600cc sport bike. But depending on your coverage, where you live and other factors can vary. You can by a 300cc bike used for 4k, insure it for $20 a month and get 70mpg. Even after spending money on gear its cheap. And you can get even cheaper if you get a scooter. But then you can spend 20k on a new hayabusa and have a $700 a month insurance bill and buy 4k worth of gear and get 30 mpg. You can make it as expensive as you want to.

    EU citizen, 35 y.o. I spent approx $4000 to acquire the license alone. So at the moment I have nothing but another letter on my driving license. So getting a bike isn't a money saving endeavour, that's for sure. However, taxes and fees aren't bad here, perhaps $20 a year. I was quoted $350 a year full coverage for a brand new 2024 SUZUKI V-Strom 800DE which isn't too bad either. I suppose you can keep insurance costs down since the cost of entry is so high and getting the license is quite challenging.

    One silver lining is a lot of these costs go down over time. The initial upfront investment is huge. But once you're just paying for gas, insurance (cheaper as the bike gets older), and maintenance - it's actually pretty cheap to keep going. Also you can you should look into doing some of the maintenance yourself! Probably not the 600 mile maintenance cause that one is really important. But after that doing regular stuff like chain adjustment and oil/oil filter is really not that hard!

    I agree with the sentiment for sure. But a lot of this is very dependent on your location and yourself. But where I am the course was like $100, insurance is cheap, taxes are pretty low, and registration isnt very expensive. And some of the gear id personally say you can go cheaper on or find good deals. You can find helmets that are plenty equipped and ece 22.06 rated for under $200, for example. But basically, a lot of the costs are super variable.

    yep its expensive as hell, so far I have spent around 15k, and only 7k of that is the bike itself. The rest are gear, insurance, riding courses (I live in eu with its eu bs laws and its expensive af to get the license like so far it has costed me 2k just for the license alone and its on the average side) and then like around another 1k for mics like lock, cover, tools etc. Its expensive af and I have no problem with that if I can get the license. They are soo fkn strict with it and if u do like a single mistake ur out and u need to wait weeks and another 150$ just for the test alone, and plus another 50$ to rent a trailer since u cant ride ur mc to the test alone.

    I don't know where in Europe you are. But some schools let you rent out the bike for the riding exams. The exam prices also vary country by country as well as waiting times. Though it seems motorcycle license is treated like a luxury at this point. I wish the EU made adjustments and let you ride 125cc if you've got a car driving license aka B category instead of only 50 cc. Way too many steps to get a full motorcycle license.

    First bike should always be used. Apparently nobody ever taught you about BEGINNER GEAR.. gloves $50-$80 jeans $100 jacket $80-$150, helmet $250, boots or shoes $80-$150. Absolutely no reason to invest $500-$800 for a first helmet unless it's just a helmet you REALLY can't live without. Some fees you can't avoid like tag n title fees and insurance. MSF in my opinion can be avoided if you u have patience and a solid person to teach you how to ride the RIGHT way. After year 1 though.... THEN it gets really expensive because at this point you're truly in the gear game and sharing to look into or things you can do to and with the bike

  • @motorcyclifter

    @motorcyclifter

    Ай бұрын

    First of all, the sentence "apparently nobody ever taught you about beginner gear" is moronic because the title of this series is literally called "what i wish i knew before buying a motorcycle". Secondly, there is no such thing as "beginner gear", only different ratings of safety. If you want to be cheap and buy low safety rated stuff, you might as well wear regular clothes cause it wont be protecting much at all. All of the highest rated safety gear is going to be the most expensive gear, unarguable. Thirdly, your point about avoiding the MSF is nonsensical. Almost no one has "a solid person to teach you" as you described to teach them plus I wouldnt trust people who have been on bikes either way to teach them because they often have bad riding habits and cant even do basic slow speed and safety drills like emergency stopping the correct way. All of your points are flawed. Very bad advice. The only good piece of advice you gave it to buy a used bike as a first bike.

    My insurance on the MT10 is actually 1/4th the cost than it was on my brand new ktm 390.
