It definitely takes patience. I’ve been on KZread as a creator for over two years and mine is the slowest growing account in my niche, so you really do have to focus on making the videos you want so that your own enjoyment of the topics carries you through. Also, as someone who wears glasses too, your glasses slipping makes you very relatable btw (oh, the struggle is real lol)

The glasses thing was why i started watching too.. that is so MEEEEE lol....

I know it takes patience. I have been uploading for about 3 years and I'm still slowly growing. It's hard work, but I'm willing to stick it out. It's really comforting that it takes bigger KZreadrs just as long to get their channel going. Tip: Whenever you feel upset about how low your sub count or view count is, just imagine however many subscribers/views you had are standing in the same room as you. 55 subs seems like not that much, but if you imagine them being in the same room as you, THAT'S A LOT OF PEOPLE.

You come across as trustworthy and authentic, someone who's really spent the time, done the work and learned from the experience. Thanks for sharing your notes, Kelsey! Looking forward to more.

I can not believe that you only had 532 subs just over a year ago! Wow! I'm sure that there were people watching this wondering how you would know how to grow a channel at that point. Nobody is questioning that now! Congrats! You'll pass 100K subs probably tomorrow. You know how to do it!

I suspect that particular video took off more in that time due to the season- in October it starts getting colder and in December is when it was most popular, so winter time in the northern hemisphere… oil paints have a lot of fumes and in warm weather you can paint outdoors or have windows open but not so much when it’s freezing cold outside. If your audience is mainly North America or maybe some UK then makes sense.

I watched your video "Launching Your Art Career in 2022" and I'm in the first stage of just needing to make stuff. My brain however starts worrying about future steps and the whole process halts. great content, i just found you out and i appreciate the sharing of very useful information for upcoming artists, i have made alot of the steps you talk about on my own path and grew alot as an artist on the past 2 years, im am not very much invested on my channel at this point of my career, but i have boosted it a bit on the past and i am planning to get back at it on the last 2 quarters of thsi year, for now im enrolled on another university technical course and just had my first child, but still i manage to paint everyday and make a very decent living from it, on Portuguese standards.. thanks for your transparency and great content

For me the most frustating thing is the watch time, since it's the only thing that's keeping me from being monotized here... Watch time is definitely the harder part of the monetization threshold to reach than subscribers. Try to really analyze your retention graphs on your videos to figure out how you can make your content more interesting. I took a look at your content-- I might try switching up your thumbnail design and make some search-driven content. Creators under 10k get a steep discount on Tubebuddy, which is a KZread SEO tool I absolutely swear by. I'm rooting for you Bia!

I've just started out doing art stuff on KZread (mostly resin dice) after trying social media and Twitch streaming for a year or so. Thanks for the tips! All your videos about behind the scenes stuff have been really inspiring. I think the biggest thing that's held me back is knowing my first videos aren't going to be very good, so it's very welcome to hear that I should just START.

i have a decent camera, its 7 years old now, but HD, and i don't really have any good lighting. i see the vision of what i would be on youtube, but, honestly i am not sure i could show up consistently seeing as i am not even happy enough with where my art is yet. the only prerequisite is being happy with where your art is and having a good rythm at making it that you can incorporate making videos in with. you have done a great job at progressing quickly and getting better at the production value. You make a good point about scripting things. makes me think of how bob ross or how kevin hill oil painting all have key phrases and very specific personalities that can easily drive the content in their episodes, on top of having a consistent and well defined style. KZread loves to tell you how your videos preform, but also LOVES to change how the algorithm works to make it harder for your videos to preform. i want to be like bob ross where ( if he were still here) he could make as many videos as he wanted on any subject, not just art, and people would watch because they are watching to watch him.

I think Bob Ross’ ability to make videos on any topic is definitely something that people with an audience can 100% do. If you’re thinking about starting on YT, I’d really recommend it! I’m far from happy with my art at the moment, and I think that’s a really relatable thing for people, but my painting process videos perform pretty well for me, particularly the vlogs, so I think people genuinely enjoy seeing the journey unfold. Thank you, for your helpful videos. ^^ I am not super sure, when I started, but it has ben a while already and only this year, (2022) I reached 50 subs. It is not a lot, but I am happy about it. Posting every week, is not really possible for me. Because I do animated content as well. I try to put something out once a month and that mostly works.^^

It takes a lot to get started, but sticking with it and finding a rhythm, coming up with new ideas and really making a job out of them is something completely different. And then there are those who are just lucky. Keep your fingers crossed for everyone who starts a youtube channel. Unfortunately it didn't work for me. Anyway Great Video but how did you find people for support each other?

It's absolutely a marathon! Just reached 1k subs myself and I've been at this for over a year. I think the best thing is to do is to make a strategy, stick with it, and see where you end up in 3-6 months, then pivot if needed.

I think you are a very knolegbile person you don't know the great deal of admiration I have for you. Kelsey, I pray to God that you have a lot greater growth than what you have right now God sees everything and I believe firmly that he blesses people like you who bless others. Just a quick question about audio and cameras: most of what I'm planning to do (with another KZread channel) is mostly 3D stuff, would I really need a camera for that or would OBS Studio to capture the screen be enough? Also, with the audio, my laptop has a built-in camera but I also have a dynamic microphone that I got mainly for recording using a cassette recorder (I'm also a musician but I'm really planning for that to be audio only or integrated with some of my videos), would using either of those and using Audacity (the only audio editor that I truly trust) would be okay to start (probably have to record the audio over and over until my talking sounds clear enough to be able to understand)?

Hey Kelsey! I've been viewing a lot of your videos recently and have been picking up a lot of great tips. I started my channel about a year ago and it's pretty much been a throw things at the wall and see what sticks kind of thing as well as getting comfortable on camera. I think one of my concerns is using my channel as a way to promote my artwork as oppose to being primarily teaching based. I would assume I'd have have to have amazing artwork in order to grow that way but I think im going to try more info driven content in the coming year. If you wouldn't mind taking a quick skim over my channel to see what you think a good direction for me to follow would be, I'd really appreciate that! Thanks for all your hard work!

Hey Shaun! I took a look at your channel. I definitely agree that info based content (what I like to consider value based content) is a great direction to pivot in. I do still think showing your process is important, though. I can't say what direction is best for you, I think figuring out who your ideal audience is is the best way to gain more clarity on that. I will say that improving the visual quality of your videos, editing out long pauses and filler words like "um" as well as inspiring a bit more curiosity in the viewer with your thumbnails would help you grow more. I’ve been posting speedpaints and animations since I was in middle school. I’m about to turn 21. I worry those old videos are bad for professionalism and my traction on this platform but I don’t think I can leave the channel. Getting subscribers is my struggle. I've been doing my art channel for over 4 months now. Not having problems with views or watch time. But getting subscribers is ridiculously difficult. After over 1200 views I don't even have 20 subs. Don't know if it's just the niche or my content 😁 Grateful for any advice

You’re doing totally fine actually in terms of views/subs ratio, just make sure you’re showing some personality and giving people a reason to stick around. Jokes or an entertaining editing style can go a long way

@@KelseyRodriguez Thanks for the advice! So 1 new subscriber for every 100- 300 views is considered normal? I somehow always thought that a beginner should get roughly 1+ sub every day. Which would make 365 subs after a year (or in cases like yours over 1000 subs in a year). I also thought people stick around mainly for the informational value. Didn't think that entertainment in such video formats would be that big of a deal. But yeah, I can see how making it more entertaining adds more value to the content. Just takes more time to produce, so I'd have to sacrifice quantity for quality.

I think it peaked because of the holidays. People researched for gift giving and those that received it researched how to use it.

How does algorithm know what a video without sound is about? Let's say I'm just drawing and have no voice over, how will algorithm know whom to show it to? Will it not work at all if I don't say keywords in the video? Have you had any experience with that?

Hmm, I don't have a lot of experience with that, but if you have keyword in the title and description I'd imagine things would probably be fine, but even text built into the video, like captions detailing the process, would help your ranking. Though there are plenty of videos that rank well in search that don't have VoiceOver

This video was very helpful. I’ve actually been on youtube for a long time. Some years have been more consistent than others. Your channel is motivating me to revive my channel and get back into a consistent work flow between art creation and video content. Would love if you could check me out.
