I was recently looking through my brother's things after he passed away (he didn't drink) and I found a bottle of 2012 Caymus. He must have won it somewhere. I'll tell you, years ago I had a few bottles of the 1987 Caymus and they were fabulous. This 2012 bottle (40th Anniversary) was an insipid fruit bomb. It was dark and big but no classic Napa cab flavors or complexity. I recently a bottle of 2018 E. Guigal Cotes Du Rhone red for $13 and it was 3X better than the Caymus.

I agree that Guigal is a very good example of Cotes Du Rhone and that Caymus Cabernet is not a indicative of a high quality Napa wine.

Nice video. Those Kirkland wines are often screaming values. I'll love to see your thoughts on more of them. Thanks for sharing this.

Costco outsources to agents in the Loire Valley who have relationships with growers who produce a wine for them under the Costco Kirkland label. In France they do the same with Champagne, Bordeaux, Premier Cru Chablis, Chateauneuf-Du Pape, Gigondas etc. All these have the Costco Kirkland label. Remember that Costco is the largest reseller of wine in the US. There’s an excess of wine in the world presently so many producers sell-off surplus wine to companies like Costco.

Never had Caymus and never will. (Unless someone is buying.)
