WOO HOO! I made it through this video without crying! That's progress, my friends! ;) So what have you missed about a country or culture when you moved away? If you left Scotland, what are things you'd miss! I'd love to hear all about it! 😁🌞

I was taken away from Scotland when I was 13 and have missed it every day since. It was always my intention to return, but somehow life got in the way of that. But you know what they say...it's never too late. Maybe yet. There's not a day goes by but I pine for home.

Being sworn at as a 'polite' greeting, good-bye or thrown in the middle of any conversation. Malcolm Tucker could really only be Scottish. Or the living history, even as an Atheist, the Abbey at Iona, the landing of Christianity in Scotland is dizzying view into the depths of history.

Sonnie Travels .........When I was 14 (in 1973) we visited family in California for about 5-6 weeks. After about week 4 I did tire of the “Thank you for shopping at Kmart/Sears/Penney’s” phrase, which was of course not said in Edinburgh shops. We visited a Scots club in Los Angles and as I stood in the doorway I was greeted with, “Hey pal, get oot the road”.............it was so refreshing🏴

Thank you so much! Scotland has a lot to love. I wish more people knew that :)
I love the degree to which you have attached to Scotland, and express it so well. We’re missing you already :) The deepest determining factor in Scottishness, I think, is the ‘take no bullshit’, be decent, kind and open whilst you laugh at yourself, and above all share in your humanity, because nobody is any better than any another. But make sure you know what you’re talking about before you sound off! It’s a powerful philosophy that emerges from the Reformation and Enlightenment. It meant that all individuals were educated and could create the conditions for self-advancement. Scotland once had the highest per capita literacy in the world. We have slipped a bit... But it’s the ‘magic’ that meant that Scots, despite our tiny population, had an impact far beyond these shores. c.f. Arthur Herman, ‘How Scots Invented the Modern World’, 2001

19 of the 56 delegates who signed the American declaration of independence where born in Scotland. Ideas and philosophies born from the Reformation and Enlightenment directly influenced many of our founding fathers. The father of the American navy, John Paul Jones, a Scot. I could go on and on. The very town I live in currently is named after a large land division in your country! If we are a nation built on immigrants then Scotland has to be one of the American foundational cultural cornerstones. I used to work for a college whose founder was a first generation Scottish immigrant way back in 1864. He started a school for working class people in a small rented room and grew that into the large multicity school it has become today. When we celebrated special occasions at the college they would break out the bagpipes. His tartan was akin to our school flag. The Tartan colors made up our school colors. Our mascot was a Scottish guy in a kilt holding the pipes. Impact far beyond your shores indeed! National Tartan day is April 6. Yep, there is a national Tartan day/week here in the US, did you know that? It celebrates the contributions the Declaration of Arbroath had in forming our own constitution. Our love affair with your country runs deeper than most Americans are probably comfortable admitting ;-) If I'm honest, I have to admit the accent from the Glasgow area ladies makes me stop dead in my tracks.

Best IPA ever. 4 The Whisky society at HWU (but also Dirty Dick's on Rose st.). 5 The beer fest at HWU 6 The variety of several great restaurants within walking distance from one another 7 Going for a stroll around the Castle area just for fun
Wow...This is a great video!! The presenter has such fantastic energy and positive enthusiasm. She is right what she says about Scotland...It is a wonderful diverse country with so much going for it. The wonderful natural surroundings, history and culture, the lovely friendliness of the people. Terrific video!!
Oh my gosh i do agree. I'm from Paris and Scotland is like no other places in the world. It's just incredible and i feel every single words you said in the video. I went there last September alone with my motorbike from Paris. James Field, Yea I've kinda planted my arse all over Uk , mostly doing plumbing, CH etc...and I've generally lived in little villages and small towns, and they tend to be the worst, they tend to think that the British, and I include the Irish in this, are a race of people, and they don't like it when you point out that we are mixed race to the point of raceless. I find that asking people their surnames, and then pointing out that they either Saxon, Norman, Viking or whatever...they tend not to like that, but as I am usually just passing thru' I couldn't give 2 fks what they think...Truth hurts as they say

We have a long and well documented history and I REALLY need to go back to the highlands, I went with family and family friends when I was 16 I think? We were staying in a small town called Carrbridge, I recommend looking it up its gorgeous! Your passion is so pleasing to watch, its so hard not to smile watching your videos hehe :P

Aww That's all so lovely to read! Thanks so much for commenting 😍😁 I'll be sure to Google Carrbridge. We've never been there that I can remember, but we were lucky enough to see a lot of other places in Scotland like Isle of Skye and Loch Ness (of course), we kayaked off the west coast and around the Isle of Mull, we hiked Benn Nevis and all around Loch Lomond too! I miss it so much. The history is amazing too, as you said. There's honestly something for everyone to love I think. Glasgow is a cool city, but I think I personally fit Edinburgh better. They're both great, but have a different feel to each of them. :)
Wow!!!! Being Scottish (I`m from Falkirk which is midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow) it is great to hear your obvious love of Scotland said with real feeling, enthusiasm and passion! WE ALMOST MOVED TO THE BAY AREA! Joe had a job offer out in Fremont, CA and we were looking at apartments out that way! We ended up deciding to move to Scotland instead (so I could get my education for less money than it would have been in California) and we never looked back. I love California, but I've got to say, I love Scotland more. Honestly, so many people smoke weed in Edinburgh and no one cares (I've literally seen people do it at bus stops). Although I am completely pro-legalizing it. Maybe one day Scotland will do so. My friend Rachel is from that same area and she prefers Edinburgh. Maybe you guys could move for a bit and try a new part of Scotland instead? :) You could always go back if you don't like it. :)

Stop it, you're making me feel homesick! As a Scot living in Spain I definitely miss small things here and there but the thing I miss the most is the people. That might be down to a language barrier but here in Spain when you're introduced to a group of people no one really makes the effort to make you feel welcome so you have to barge in on conversations. Which can be hard. And usually the topics of conversation are really stale compared with the hilarity sodden Scots conversations. The first time I took my Spanish girlfriend back home she thought I knew everyone because so man people would have a wee blether with us. I really miss that.

What makes me proud to be a Scot is the wonderful people who made such an incredible contribution to the world that we live in today ... Logie Baird (TV), Alexander Graham Bell (telephone), Alexander Fleming (penicillin), Adam Smith (Economics) ... and many others but perhaps the best is James Clerk Maxwell, whose Maxwell equations (used in everything electronic) put him up there with Einstein and Newton. There is a small Maxwell museum in Edinburgh.

We Miss you too. Haste ye back lass. I think you can get a Scottish accent on a GPS, just google the manufacture of device. It's Scot's Law, that you must allow anyone, to use your toilet, if asked. Thought, everyone knew this? Err... Glasgow is better looking than Edinburgh. Glasgow has more green parks than anywhere in UK! They were probably from the far North of Scotland & speak Doric, which you did'nt recognised? Our drinking tap water, is something I miss, if I left Scotland. Tasted London's & you can chew the chalk in it! Yuck! Nice colour of Dress, very Scottish too. Love from Scotland 5* :D

Since it's been over 6 months, I'm legally allowed to visit again haha, but the visa stuff is still an issue sadly. Haha I know people from Glasgow are really proud and that's awesome. I didn't know that! I wish I got to spend more time there. Thanks! It's one of my favourite colours! :)

Love your posts. All the best from Scaaatland.
I come from Alloa (near Stirling, sandwiched in between the Ochil Hills and River Forth) and tbh us Scots are often very negative about ourselves and our communities . It's so lovely to hear that you had a very different experience, as Robert Burns once said ' wad some power the giftie gie us, to see ourselves as others see us...' I'm so glad you enjoyed your time here. I hope you come back!

I've heard a mixture from people, but from my limited experience most were very proud of their country and its people :) Thanks so much! I hope I can come back too! We'll definitely at least visit again. :)

That sounds beautiful! 😍 But yeah, you can't beat the friendliness in Scotland! 😁
I'm Scottish and have lived here all my life However, during the 90s and 00s I spent a lot of time in France and fell in love with everything French. I can remember missing France so much when I wasn't there and I just ached to get back. Around that time I also recall a discussion I had with my wife, who also adores France, where we wondered if anyone missed Scotland the way we missed France. We weren't convinced that anyone would. However, thanks to you and lots of other YTers I now realise that a great many people do miss Scotland. It has led me to appreciate this wonderful wee country all the more so I offer my heartfelt thanks to you and all your fellow vloggers.
You're always more than welcome back :D, you clearly enjoyed your time here :).

Loved it. Me maw's frae Glesga, and i live in Borneo. I miss Bonnie Scotland, especially my mum's side of the family, with their Scottish twang.
I'm from Dundee, moved over to Munich for work, but always miss home and of course the friends
Sonnie, I stumbled upon your vid. It is great. We holidayed in the US in October. San Francisco, LA, Houston, Memphis & Chicago. Mainly by train. The one thing I really enjoyed was teaching willing train passengers the Scots Language. Not always profane, honest! Words like 'Dreich', and 'Haud yer weisht'. The most naughty one was the multiple use of the word, 'fanny'. ' 'Swiftkey' now have 'Scots' as a language option. Re helping tourists out. I have done this loads of times. I feel it is almost my duty to try and give every tourist a good story to take back home. I am proud of my country, but all good things have to be worked at.

+Kenneth I'm so glad you did! That's so awesome of you and I especially agree with the last sentence. No place is perfect sadly. Did you see my Scots video? I think you'd like it. Luckily, I learned a lot from it. :)
Great video! I've got an enduring love for the British country side, sadly I'm not very well travelled in Scotland, though I'd like to be, but I love the Yorkshire Moors and the Peak District, I'd definitely miss those if I ever moved away. There are so many places I want to visit, but for us there's no big desire to actually live anywhere else - it's still super cool to watch you guys do it though! P.S. I love your top in this video.

Thanks so much! ^_^ I got it at Macys in the US when I was 16 (lmao wow it's over 10 years old!). I'm glad you liked it. :) I wish we got to explore more of the UK. We were focused on Scotland so we didn't even make it to Northern Ireland or Wales :( I'm determined to see more of it though :)

Hey cat lady! Lol I hope you and Joe are well. You really make Scotland sound great. I'm definitely heading there some day. Have you ever seen the series "Outlander"? It's on Starz here in the U.S. it's really interesting. It shows a lot of the history and hits on some of the folklore of the area. The main female character is from Inverness. If you ever get a chance to watch it, it's interesting. I lived in Berlin Germany for a couple years. I loved the food, the people and the history over there. And of course the beer wasn't bad. I wish you luck and are travels on your journeys. Hope you have a great day.

Thanks so much. We're doing well. My friends love Outlander, but we haven't watched it yet. I'm worried it'll make me miss Scotland more lol We've been to Berlin! We were thinking about moving there after Japan, but we haven't decided on anything official yet :)

I’ve visited Scotland several times and I agree wholeheartedly Scotland is outstanding. I’ve not yet been north of Inverness but look forward to exploring there next time. I have to say you shocked me when you spoke of the many languages you were used to hearing and you mentioned specifically Cantonese. As some who’s lived in China north & south for more than two decades I find it uncommon to hear someone like yourself who can differentiate between the different dialects of Chinese. I’m a Mandarin speaker but having lived in the south for 14 years I’ve also picked up a bit of Cantonese so I can tell the difference myself. Enjoy Japan! I’ve been visiting there a couple times a year for many years and really love it there too.
A love my country man, good to know there is many good things she has to say :) hope yous come back

Sonnie you are so right we are blessed to live in such a lovely country. I live in the City, Dundee but within an hour I can be in St Andrews, Angus Glens, Pitlochry, 2 hours Fort William, the Borders and 3 hours Inverness and the Highlands, I think I will have wee tour of Fife tomorrow, just because I can lol
Hi. When my son was stationed in Japan for 3 1/2 yes I got to visit him for 2 weeks. Japan is amazing!! I am of Scottish/Irish decent. My Mom and I have been planning a trip to Scottland for many yrs now. Haven't been there yet due to my son's Navy schedule and deployment.
I'm absolutely blown away by your enthusiasm for my country. If only some people here had half of your infectious enthusiasm and realise what's on their own doorstep, they too would be blown away. Btw, I love Edinburgh aswell in the rain. 😎
I'm glad you look back on your time in my country so favourably. In fact, the reason I found your channel was because I wanted to see a foreigners perspective of Scotland. Plenty of my friends would be on the first flight out if they had the chance, but I've always thought that's just a "grass is always greener" type of thing. Sure, the weather isn't always great but I really can't imagine myself living anywhere else. Maybe you'll be back one day ;)
@SonnieTravels

I TOTALLY agree about the "grass is always greener" mentality. The majority of Americans I've met that have lived in both places prefer the UK. If you've seen my video about working in the US vs the UK, it gives a big indicator of why that may be lol I hope I'll be back one day. :)
I was out of Glasgow for about 8 weeks recently, and surprisingly I REALLY missed the rain! No rain in 8 weeks, where as it's about every 2nd day in Glasgow :)

You're just soooo enthusiastic and it gladdens my heart to hear you speaking about my wee country in such positive terms. I always think my accent sounds TERRIBLE (especially when I hear myself recorded) so I'm always delighted when I hear that someone else thinks it's OK. There are plenty things I'd miss if I were to leave, mostly food related :-) but I guess most people will say square sausage and Irn Bru etc. I'd miss being able to cross the road without a pedestrian crossing or green man, and having unrestricted access to the great outdoors, and I'd have to agree with you about the Highlands ... the beaches up that west coast too, they're fantastic.

There are plenty of people out there who adore Scottish accents! :) Yes! A lot of people have mentioned the square sausages and Irn Bru lol Yes. I miss the nature of Scotland so much!
Would love to visit there.
Scotland is sooooo incredible! And the way you describe it, it´s just like that!! Dont´t forget the hairy cows and the heather over the highlands in May. They make extraordinary gems out of them! I brought my own piece of Scotland from de isle of Skye...

I'm so glad you liked the video! ^_^ It would've been an incredibly long video if I named everything I loved about Scotland in it, but I'm glad you mentioned the coos and heather :D Gotta love em!
Not sure if this'll work but: Go onto your phone or tablets setting app Tap on Language and input Tap on Text/Speech output Under "Preferred Engine" select another Text/Speech option Voice Navigation should use the voice you selected. The voice in other apps may change too. Hope this helps
Arthur's Seat is a challenging walk but sitting at the top you can see almost the whole city and there's just this pool of green in it below you. So strange but really cool :)

I got to know about your channel through Rachel and Jun's, I am loving your videos on Scotland! I recently moved back to India after living for a year and half in Belfast NI. Can totally correlate to your experience. Though I have travelled a lot back then but Edinburgh holds a very special place in my heart. Amazing people and work culture. Though I was a student in Belfast, amy favourite professor is Scottish, aahh what a gentleman he is! I loved my 4 days stay there, especially during the Christmas. It's great to know that people move to Japan from the UK 😅 I am moving this September to kanazawa Ishikawa prefecture.

I've never been to New Orleans, but I've heard wonderful things about it! Maybe you could study there? i know getting a visa in America is just as difficult as getting one in the UK :( I hope I can too! It all depends on Brexit (as you already know) So only time will tell! :)
I stay in Scotland, since I can remember I have wanted to moved to America but now watching this just reminds me of how wonderful it is but yes I would miss all the stuff you said but the humour would be what I miss most plus the glasweigan slang
