    I am from Glasgow and have lived in many countries since 1971. 50+ years, mostly in Italy, I have adapted to overseas life. Now retired I live in the Canary Islands. What do I miss? Not a lot really as I can prepare most traditional dishes at home however there is nothing like Stornoway black pudding or a good haggis. What makes me sentimental for Scotland - traditional songs and the pipes and drums.

  • @SonnieTravels

    People in the UK (and not just Scotland) learned to queue during the two world wars in the first half of the twentieth century because everything was rationed and in short supply. We have never unlearned the habit and are the better for it. You wait for your turn and that's that.

    Definitely have to be very careful about bringing medications, because many medications that are legal elsewhere are illegal in Japan, like almost all ADHD meds, or other prescription meds. Always research the specific medication, it might require documentation, applications, or be outright illegal.

    I was recently digging about in the file structure of my (Android) smartphone when, lo and behold, I came across the voice files Google Maps uses when it's telling me where to go. In theory I know how to replace them but these projects usually end up impaled on unforeseen problems. Changing the accent is a given but it would obviously have to involve a fair bit of swearing and political incorrectitude!

    Customer service sucks big time in Scotland as well as public offices. Compared to Europe, it feels like you've travelled back in time to the middle ages or something. Everything takes AGES here. The disasters like landslides, fires, floods, storms and power outages are accepted as the norm instead of fixing bridges, dams, etc. to make the environment safer. The drinking in the streets is not cool, the number of junkies and drunkards are insane here. On a positive note, the language is wonderful, people are friendly and chatty, they really do not judge you, they do accept you as you are and the landscape is amazing.

    I was more surprised that you and your husband didn’t correct and rebuke the guy for his outrageous statements talking about trying to get him to commit adultery in front of you. You seem much more outraged about their attitude toward tattoos than the practice of cheating.

  • @SonnieTravels
    @SonnieTravels Жыл бұрын

    We've argued with our friends about their thoughts on cheating, but it's their culture there. So it's not like we can say, "No, you're wrong." The cheating luckily doesn't effect us because we don't cheat haha But I was certainly offended and made that known. The teacher who said that, well that was a tough position to be in because I was surrounded by coworkers and the principal was there too. So we tried explaining that that's not how it works for us and that Joe wasn't interested, etc. But the teacher was also very drunk tbh. I didn't feel the same way about our working relationship after that either. The tattoo stuff was something that could really effect us, however. We could've been fired, forced to move, etc.

  • @danielnosuke

    @@SonnieTravels If you guys are moral relativists, then there's no real meaning to being offended. It kind of seemed like that was where y'all are coming from. • @SonnieTravels
    @SonnieTravels Жыл бұрын

    @Daniel Morgan When it comes to human rights, women's equality, animal rights etc. I'm more outspoken, but with the cheating stuff, if that's how their marriages work, who am I to say it's wrong? It's just not for us or something we participate in. I know he didn't mean offence by it, but from my standpoint, someone in front of me telling my husband he can cheat wasn't a great feeling. But it is what it is.

    You are very sweet. I never have been to Scotland and I have Scottish heritage and some Irish. I think I would like culture shock just because it is different. So, about the atheism. Speak your mind and try not to worry about what other people think or say. I actually am a Christian, but I don't really go to church ever. I don't like how different it is and fake. A lot of Christians are weird and so, so fake. I do have my bible study sessions on zoom. But yeah, God gave everyone free will to choose. Sorry, you had to deal with such pressure and abandonment from those people. At least you are away from that and free to breathe a little. Please keep making videos of Scotland, I am very interested.
