What I Learned Doing all the exercises in "Beginning Drawing Atelier" by Juliette Aristides (Review)

NOT A SPONSORED VIDEO!
Hello everyone! I did ALL the exercises in Juliette Aristides' Beginner Drawing Atelier and I thought I'd do a flip through of the book showing the results.:)
If you are interested in learning classical realistic drawing like how the old masters did it, I highly highly recommend this book. You can get in in Chapters (here in Canada), Amazon, and pretty much any big bookstore:)
Update:
I finished Juliette's other book "Figure Drawing Atelier" as well and did a review. Link below.

Upon watching, I see how thourogh your lessons are, and the dearth of tuition I received in my lengthy education. I feel somewhat cheated, but at least elevated my skills several fold some years after leaving college. Hand on heart, I can say that I learned most from books.

Juliette, I love your book also and purchased it as soon as it came out! I recently saw your KZread videos that you did for a few lessons that accompany the book and I am so happy to have those to show my students!! Would you possibly consider doing other videos to accompany your book? I have been looking for a resource like this (atelier book + video) for a long time!

Thank you for taking the time to show each page. I just started drawing this week and I want to learn proper technique. I saw this book on Amazon and placed it in my cart, but was not sure it was for a true beginner like myself. I will definitely order this. Your exercises were great. I especially think that the last exercise was done really well.

You don’t need to turn your work upside down (regarding portraits)… so a tip 1. I believe you are drawing it by keeping it on a table. Instead keep the book straight up on an easel or stick it to a wall and then draw. That way you will get rid of the perspective distortion. And the 2. Have a blockin (setting up the boundaries at least) first so that your image is not bigger or smaller than the original. Have fun drawing

Your review was inspiring, it reminds me of the time when I was struggling to learn to draw. It's never easy and it can take years before you start seeing good results. I would also like to take this opportunity to strongly recommend J. Aristides books. If you are serious about learning how to draw and paint high quality classical style pictures, her books are among the best on the market.

@@EmmyMW I'm mostly self taught myself, but I find that I want to improve my work and I regret that I knew nothing about ateliers back in the 80's, probably because there wasn't many around? I learned practically nothing taking art classes in college so I turned to books and that's when i really began to learn. I was lucky to discover Harold Speeds books early on, but like you mentioned in your review here, I felt intimidated by the exercises he presented in his books. I was nowhere near that level of accomplishment but something about them motivated me to believe in myself and push forward. I have purchased four of Juliette's books and find they are extremely well written and very informative. Definitely worth their price. I find them inspirational and are a great source for cultivating ones artistic outlook.

I love that the book is systematic and thorough and that you followed it to the letter. Excellent. Do you think what you learnt informs the work you did since following the book or that you simply feel more confident from the control you gained?

That's a great question! I think it's both, but definitely having more confidence in drawing after doing the workbooks has had a bigger impact on my work.Doing the enveloping and such is something I will always include in drawing now, but the fact that I was able to do the exercises at all (even if sub par in some cases) has definitely made me realize I can keep pushing forward.
