About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

I trust everything you guys. Do. You do it with care and intent. How are Tony and Jonathan? We haven't seen them for a while.
Those are pollard willows, very common trees. They were originally grown to provide rods for weaving wicker baskets. They need to be pruned every winter, so the basket maker would always have thin material for their work. Since these old chateaux always had to be self supporting, there was always a farm, vegetable gardens and livestock attached (and even orangeries for more luxurious fruits). And every kind of baskets were always in need, so I think they kept them to provide travelling basket makers with material when they came by annually to work for a few weeks on the estate. By the way, Ash and Terry, what happened to the missing part of the iron fence at the edge of the barn?

Just 2 things to remember when pollarding...1.) follow the rule of thirds for old trees that have never been pollarded before. One third the first year and the remaining the following year. 2.) always do it when the tree is dormant to prevent shock to the tree...always in the winter season in other words. :)
Those look like whomping willows. Terry, did you bring these back from Hogwarts? 🧙🪄✨ There bizarre looking, I absolutely love them. You look like your standing inside a giant nest. Great job pruning back. Very healthy for the trees, as they’re dormant. They’ll burst to life even better now. My husband really appreciates you taking care of your equipment. It’s so ingrained for us after 35 yrs of doing landscaping. It’s great seeing homeowners doing the same. Great job all around! (Thought I was on OF for a second) 🤣🤣🛁🫧🥂🍾 Yous are great fun I can tell, and you definitely like being cheeky once in awhile. Thanks for the vlog.

.Crepe myrtle is about the only plant that is pollarded here in Atlanta. Since it is not a fruit bearing plant, it's really just a matter of taste. I'm on the side of this who favor the natural form and refer to collared crepe myrtles as crepe murder.
I love the way you two look at each other.
We see these knots or cankers on trees which have been affected by canker disease or improper pruning and failure to put pruning paint on open cuts freshly pruned. There is a spray you can use to treat the disease. I use spray paint to seal the fresh pruned areas. These cankers build up over time and eventually cut off critical sap circulation required to produce new healthy growth.

Yes, I understand it, but must admit I personally think they look awful. But that is just me and it is not my opinion that counts. I do applaud the family for taking care of them. The only time I see something like it here is where someone planted under/too close to a powerline n power company hacks them all up.
@cherylplucinski9651

I absolutely adore this family, But having a difficult time watching the devastation of these trees. Better to remove them entirely-especially if they are destroying the wall, and begin again. Once treated in this way, it takes a good deal of work to bring the tree back to a good shape. They will always look like something from The Hobbit. Remove and replant something that isn’t so time consuming for you to keep up, doesn’t damage your wall and is pleasing to the eye. Again, love you all and applaud all of the hard/wonderful work you have done.

Well, you would never, ever top a live oak! The tree would never look the same and it would eventually kill it. We don't destroy a 200 year old majestic tree, we replace the sidewalks, sewer lines, fences, etc, instead. We call them heritage trees, in many cities these trees must be saved and you would be heavily fined if it were cut down to build something over it....the tree must be incorporated into the landscape plan, or moved.

Dead or alive. 😳😱 If I find one at work (flipped up side down, "playing" dead, I will avoid the room until someone else can sweep it up. Before I had employees to help me I'd wait a week before I'd try sweeping it into a dustpan and I swear that's when it would start wiggling it's legs! I never knew what Pollarding a tree was until I watched another You tube Channel Chateau owner doing it. Makes a lot of sense and even better if you can use for kindling, etc. Good advice on chainsaw/ oil and blade maintenance.
Hi Guys, It is an interesting note below about pollarding willows. Here in the states, they let "Weeping Willows" grow and never trim them, however, never plant them near a house, well, or septic system since the roots grow towards any water source. They do make for a lovely view, so many are planted along river banks, streams, or ponds. Also, thanks for sharing the chain saw sharpening tool. I just ordered the same one on Amazon for my partner. Now we'll be able to sharpen our own chains, extend their life and spend less money replacing chains or paying for sharpening. Thanks, Mark

Thank you 😊
Well done Ash! Enjoyed watching you at work. You have gained expertise over your time at the Chateau. Thank you for the explanation on pollarding and the maintenance of your tools. Good to see. As they say, a workman is only as good as his tools. Also well done both of you for clearing the cuttings as you went. Gained firewood and used your time well. 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻♥️
