Hundreds of years ago, Christian buildings were built atop much older pagan sites as a way of honouring the site itself, and to keep it for the people, as it was always used for worship. Perhaps you have an old stone that was kept out of respect for the site itself. And it's at the doorway, a portal. Something to think about.

Just wanted to say that Yanis (sp) is worthy of some hardcore respect, that guy has a solid work ethic. And some massive patience, I hate being called "young, son, child, kid" by older people. LOL Although, I usually get em back by giving them grandpa walkers for gifts. :D --- EDIT - Look at the ceiling, or above the ceiling in Ryans apartment and see if there is any fire damage there, also look above the top apartment seiling and look to see if there is any fire damage above the ceiling. Since most people will do the bare minimum to fix / repair things.

The red pottery reminds me of samian ware. It was mass produced in Gaul (France) in the 1st/2nd century by the Romans. Roman glass was very thin. The grey bowl/cup is wheel made, and the fact you have the profile will make identification much easier.

It’s quite possible that the odd center stone was actually used as a fulcrum to hoist the threshold stone into place just as YOU used it with the steel bar. This place was a somewhat secluded convent. With an adjoining hospital. Through some of the worst times in history.... You have no IDEA how many people died in that place! One more or less doesn't really add up to the legions of ghosts inhabiting the place. You have to live with all of them - or don't.

We had a house fire that damaged 85% of our house. After renovations, we still got a seepage like that drip down the wall that you saw in the first room (in the top apartment). It's toxins from the smoke that are seeping out of the wall as it sweats due to humidity in the room. Definitely a fire and/or heavy smoker in that apartment. Also, Simon, that looks like it might be a French stoneware cider jug, maybe Calvados.

Finding pottery at an historic excavation site can tell a story about life at a site. If there are not enough fragments, it can be puzzling at times unless experts can identify what they are is key to knowing about them and what they were. An American in St. Louis, Missouri (The 2nd Empire Strikes Back channel) had a guy come over to metal detect his front and back yard for discarded historic bits and pieces. He has kept them as mementos hoping they belonged to the previous two owners.

I think that step at the entrance was part of an older building. It was pretty different to the existing building in style and it's depth certainly suggest it's from another time period. I think the oddly laid stone was a ramp for barrows. Possibly the archway was permanently open and the doors into the building started either side of the corridor?

Could be, but it's also below the corridor flagstones, which, with inclusion of the basement entrance, probably original to the convent as we know it. It's probably fairly easy to check for older buildings on this site? I'm assuming France also has an equivalent of the doomsday book? Especially as it was the French that implimented it here in the UK.

Firstly, Billy & family - enjoy your first proper holiday together. Secondly, it is really sad that a woman lost her life in the building. Very interested to see what Simon is finding whilst excavating. I am amazed at how big that granite piece is in the doorway. Excited to see what will be happening in Billy’s absence - and Phil coming to help. Loved the music at the start 💜. Ps. Hope Ryan is ok. Noticed he hasn’t put a video up. ❤️

We had a fire with extensive smoke damage. We paid a com pany to come in and midigate the soot. They did a great job. Years later i opened up a toy to put in a new battery and found soot inside of the battery cavity.

I had a favorite bear as a kid. It's what I grabbed to save from a fire back then. Decades I found it in a box of my stuff after my mom died. I could still smell the smoke.

I'm thinking that that large piece of granite / flagstone was put there as a way to keep the mud from coming in to that entrance. And I think the cobblestone was put later. I can feel old feet on that piece of granite in Old leather shoes tied on top. I know you may think I'm weird, but I can't get images and feelings from something when I look at it

Simon you will be finding so much good old stuff around your place. Will be nice to see it all. Anointing oil or Holy water maybe? Watching all the work you guys are doing to bring life back into that beautiful old place is very heart warming. Thanks for sharing. LOVE seeing the finds. Glad that Simon is "into" the history part. God bless and protect. Have a wonderful holiday with the family. The convent is in great hands.

Another great episode!! Whew! Alex makes vids even more of a joy to watch. What an incredible, talented team you have, Billy! They will continue to make you proud, while you enjoy a much deserved family vacay. Poor Ryan, new info threw him -- as it did me. More to come.

The first pottery chips remind me of what was popular in the 1970s. The second glass piece is like antique glass, as drinking vessels were made paper thin.

That stone in front of the doorstep could have been a part of a cornerstone from an older abby or convent or church elsewhere that had gone to ruin. Those stones would have been blessed or even from the resting place church of a saint and brought in to bless the convent and keep evil out..I wonder if the bottle jar that Simon found might be for oils. Either cooking or holy oils.

I hope you and your family have a lovely holiday Billy. It sounds like the team have an interesting time planned for us while you're away. I'm loving the little finds of pottery. You may want to speak with the insurers again and find out if anything else of interest happened at the convent. ❤🐨

Just thinking out loud again, re - the body on the stairs. Didn’t the insurance company lease the ground floor flat? (Dramatic music). I would get in touch with Inspector Clousea of the Surete. They may have more interesting facts about it. The Reception area now needs a glass cabinet on the wall to show artefacts found around the building but not dead bodies! Have a good holiday Billy and family. Great vlog again as per with Alex on cam/edit. Stay well you all.

Those stairs to the 3rd floor apartment are so steep. I can imagine someone running away from the fire, missing their footing and ending up with a broken neck.

Poor Ryan, his reaction to someone dying in the apartment, but he looked so relieved with each assurance Billy provided of it being in the above apartment...but doesn't seem THAT much more relieved ☺(and I don't blame him, what a find!)
