As a master gardener I have been dying to see the convent gardens - last year's clean up was so exciting and many interesting features were uncovered. Selfishly I wish equal time could be given to the garden and grounds as there is to the interior. The garden restoration project could be a new channel entirely for Billy and friends.

Definitely exciting. I keep thinking that there might be master gardeners (my mother in law was one, studied plant grafting at a botanic garden, among other things), who might volunteer, with helpers, to restore much of the gardens, once the heavy clearing is done. Another Petherick's You Tube channel??? I see the fruit trees, etc., especially since Alex has been filming, & wonder if they could be "saved."

Billy should borrow a small group of goats and an electric fence. They would clear the entire garden, brambles and all in a couple weeks. Free labour and you are feeding goats. We used goats and donkeys at our chateau. Cheers!

I'm really enjoying the intros to the videos since Alex started filming. Billy was excellent with his editing skills, and his videos were always entertaining, and with Alex there they still are, but there is a difference with the intros that seems to somehow make the convent more visible, the camera angles and captures are so much more intimate than before, that rather than just being excited about seeing what's going on there, I'm actually starting to get a much better feel for the place on a physical level now. I would love to see a tour of the overgrown gardens with Alex's camera, as he picks up a lot that gives a real feel for a space, and it would feel like a proper stroll through, something I would enjoy very much.

When I paused and zoomed in I am pretty sure that is Pius the 11th (1922-1939) and not his successor, Pius the 12th (1939-1958). Pp Pius XII had a fairly thin face and always looked kind of gaunt compared to Pp Pius XI. The two other medals were too hard to make out the writing, but I'm guessing Simon is right that it was St Christopher and The Blessed Virgin (looked like a Miraculous Medal from the detail I could see).

The pope on the medal is pope Pius XI, born on 31 May 1857 as Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, died on 10 January 1939. He was pope from 22 January 1922 untill his death. The text around his image is "PIVS XI PONT MAX". The words "PONT MAX" stands for "PONTIFEX MAXIMUS" and means "High Priest" in English. This is a title of the pope. On the other side is the St. Peters Basilic in Rome and the brick wall is actually the colonnade around St. Peter's Square. Interesting finds! Greetz, Mahdi

The first medal is a St Christopher pendent. We wore sacred medals around our necks on fine chains when I was at Catholic School. The niche most likely held a statue of the Virgin Mary. May was the Virgin's month and we took flowers to the statue. May Crowning was a Catholic tradition that seems to have started at the end of the 17th Century. You guys make me laugh so hard when you guess at the Sister's lives. 😂 I know there are priests and nuns who follow this and I'm sure they can tell you a lot!!! Phil, you are a dear friend. I no longer even attempt to do things without the correct tools. Cheaper and easier even to go buy them than spend hours and hours in pain, suffering, and swearing. Nice job with the flail and the well.

The one medal looked like a Pope Pius XI medal with his relief on one side and that of St. Peter's Square on the other. This would date to the early 1930's... Fun explorations!

The nuns most likely took a vow of poverty, the items that you find will not be worth a great deal. However, as historical finds they are preceless. I hope you continue detecting and build an even greater collection of trinkets. Maybe you can even talk Billy into investing in a better quality detector that won't trouble you as much, LOL 😊 Lastly, poor Phil, I actually felt his pain.

Everyone knows that at times, very specific language is required to finish a difficult task. Well done, Phillip. 😊 If I could live my life again, I would become an archeologist. I found an old dump on my farm and spent many hours digging up old jars and bottles...I never got tired of it, plus I have some pretty amazing things to display. ❤

Yannis english is sounding good. As I've said before I'm in love with Simon, I could put him in my pocket and bring him home with me. I like to hear Simon talk and explain what he is doing and the why of it. Poor Phil that job ahead of replacing the little blades looks daunting. Alex does a wonderul job of following you all around and filming what your doing. You all are such a blessing to Billy and his family,

Very exciting Simon to see you unearthing interesting finds, many of them so ancient. Also very exciting is hearing Yannis talking with his intro's and wind-ups everyday. Perhaps Yannis could read some of the French off the finds for us in Canada. I used to watch Time Team plus Mudlarking on the Thames foreshore. All the best for the garden ..can't wait for Monday Yaay!
