What Happens When You Ask Me About My Hair | Myliek Teele | TEDxGeorgiaStateU

Growing up, Myleik Teele’s parents tried to shield her from all the dangers of the world, but they couldn’t protect her from her hair. Myleik shares her personal story to empower and encourage others.
California-bred innovator, Myleik Teele, has revolutionized the way women address their curly hair needs. As the founder of curlBOX, an exclusive monthly subscription box full of amazing products, the stylish entrepreneur has garnered partnerships with Procter & Gamble, Carol’s Daughter, Walmart, Target and Shea Moisture. Before creating curlBOX, the San Francisco State University graduate honed her talents for a decade in public relations. Teele worked with brands such as Calvin Klein Cosmetics, The Grammy Awards, American Idol and Nike, as well as music artists Prince, Linkin Park and Travis Barker. In 2010, Teele birthed Art of Facts Public Relations in Atlanta, Georgia. Naturally, Teele’s zeal for building brands would lead her to create the premier hair sampling box that’s developed a cult following of savvy women.

im so glad as a black woman that my Mom, grandmother, and aunts never made me feel that my thick course hair was not beautiful whether in it's natural state, hot combed or permed....my hair went through it all growing up and as an adult....now at 55 and for the past 20 years i have chosen to style my hair in it natural state and i would not have it any other way

It is beautiful to see the big picture of what God sent this wonderful woman to drive her to a better place. Being multi-ethnic I just don't belong even though I am everything and it is nice to see hair addressed as hair because we all have different needs.

The most inspirational and brave woman I've ever had the privilege of listening to...my only concern was that there was absolutely no warning given to the viewer before the graphic image of the depleted shelves of "hair relaxants" is put up!!!! I don't have children myself, but the thought of an innocent little kid of 18 or 19 accidentally viewing that terrifying photo is horrific.... but this is real life and maybe I'm wrong to want to protect kids from the harsh reality that there is simply more products to "add volume" to hair ,then there are products to "reduce volume" to hair.....

We must remove gender discrimination, it's time we end all hair on the top of anyone's head! Daily shavings will help empower the bald also. Too often hair can be a gender marker causing us to play into the false stereotypes of how need to people act. I know my hair is so long in the photo. I have to keep long to fit into this oppressive cis hetro biased society one day we will all be free of hair

yes, of course, she had washed her hair before, the point was that the community had changed. she said "no one else hair looked like that" meaning the white children in her new neighborhood. she didn't feel different previously in a community of people who looked like her.
