Race and Ethnicity Through Hair | Tiana Barkley | TEDxNewarkAcademy

Growing up with hair that didn't look like her peers', Tiana Barkley knows first hand the long-lasting effects hair can have on a child into their teenage years and throughout their life. Having hair that does not fit into stereotypical beauty standards can result in positive and negative judgements from both one's peers and oneself. Inspired by her Puerto Rican and African American heritage and her own experiences, Tiana speaks on how one's race and ethnicity can be explored through their hair, and she delivers a message of the importance of taking care of your hair. Hair not only serves as a first impression; it allows one to express themselves, racially and socially, as well as accept their true identities.
Tiana Barkley is a senior at Newark Academy. She is involved in many activities, including the Equity and Inclusion Team, a committee composed of faculty and students to help promote diversity in her school. She recently participated in the Student Diversity and Leadership Conference and has used her platform as a dancer to perform about social injustices. Outside of her academics, Tiana is very dedicated to her school's dance program and softball team. She has completed a two-week homestay with a family in Galicia, Spain, as well as hurricane restoration and other community service projects in New Orleans.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Relaxing hair twice a year will leave your hair a mess. I know that's not the point of the video but that's what destroyed her hair. Relaxers have to be kept up more often than that or the hair will break where it meets the new growth. And I have wavy hair so I know from experience plus I used to be a hairdresser.

I couldn't do a public talk. Even with everything that I know that many people don't, I still couldn't. My brain would shut down and I'd forget what needs to be said. I want to put my work up on my channel, but there's so much negativity in this world I'd worry people would take offense. I worry that even my existence is offensive, because few people think like me. I believe people can have different opinions and neither side has to be completely wrong. That's me.

I understand you but I also want to say if you feel like you have something to say, say it. Your existence is not offensive because it just isn't and if anyone says it is they have a problem. I like how objective you are few people believe that neither side has to be completely wrong. just thought i'd leave this here. bye have a wonderful life *smiley face*

So...hair matters, but, it also doesn't matter? P.S. All the way through I kept thinking, "she does know she's talking 'bout hair, right"?

Is this really worth a ted lecture? As a 4b myself I understand hair struggles. I thought this was going to be a bit more scientific but it just seemed a bit of a rant. Maybe white people watching might benefit 🤷🏽‍♀️ if they care

African Americans make up only 13% of the US population. Why would you expect the majority of hair salons to cater to you? It's like me (a white person) going to Nigeria and complaining that there aren't a bunch of people that know how to style my type of hair.

Stop insulting the white people. You should take a DNA test. More than likely you have some European ancestry. Most African-Americans are mixed race and don't even know it.
