I have been driving electric since 2011 and never have run out of charge. I plan to arrive at the next charger at 20%, about 50 EPA miles, reserve "fuel." If the car's arrival SOC estimate starts dropping, I am still comfortable with as little as 10% reserve. However if windy, stormy, or below freezing, I will slow down and conserve my use of heat when below 20%. In those cases, it is better to slow down early, and if your reserve looks good as you get closer to the next charger, then speed back up. This gives you more options vs. waiting until your SOC is low before slowing down.
