Yes, the majority of Iberians were Muslims at that time, and even the Inquisition was not easy for the Spanish because it took a long time and they killed hundreds of thousands of Muslims and the rest were forcibly converted. Haven't you noticed that the Iberians at that time spoke Arabic? And there are thousands of Arabic words in Spanish and Portuguese today.

It took over 300 years to become dominant in Lower Egypt, much longer in southern Egypt and there are still 6 million Coptic speakers there today. It is questionable whether a majority of Iberians ever spoke Arabic because the Reconquista began before its presence was consolidated.

What was crucial in European history was that Islam was driven out (Granada, Vienna) and the European countries were able to develop with the Enlightenment, democratization, humanism, education, secularism, freedom of the press and equality between men and women;! All attributes that are still missing in Islamic states today:! Despite all the turbulence, Europe is still a "promised land!" If only muslim society developed on the same foot. For as far i am concerned and know my history, the caliphate was a pretty tolerant rule, in contrast to the christian kingdoms back then (and hundred years further on). It seems that after the fall of islamic rule in Spain, the islamic world as a whole had a fall itself. They became poor, had no to little to eat and didn’t develop scientifically anymore. The term “Caliphate” had a whole different meaning back then in comparison to now, where it is pretty much like the christian kingdoms back then. Intolerant, repressive and no room for minorities.
