What Happened to the Moss Ball Ecosphere?
What happened to the moss ball tree ecosphere? How is this doing today? Is this sustainable long-term? Will the snails live? I think you get the idea!
I've been getting questions about this ecosphere on every video since it was uploaded. I only pulled a small fraction for the beginning segment, but needless to say, it was time to address them. If there's something else you can think of that I left out of the video, be sure to let me know and I'll do my best to get back to you.
Also... I'm sorry I had to go and do that to you! ;) You should know by now that it's not my style at all.I have to keep you on your toes though... Don't hate me!

If you dont feed yer snails calcium, they will actually outgrow their shells and bascally bascally explode. I had that happen to an old snail i got years ago.

To add calcium and magnesium to the set up, add crushed egg shell. 2-3 eggs worth should do it.

How crushed are we talking? Like, small pieces for them to chew on...or powder? If the former, wondering if they'd enjoy a small cuttle shell? `(or a piece of a bought one from a pet shop if you can't find your own on a beach) I have some powdered eggshell from when I used to have chickens. I'd save the shells, wash and dry them, then dump them all in a blender until powdered. I'd add this to their feed occassionally. I'm gonna assume the former though...cos that just makes more sense. Was just asking to confirm this. :D

@@TheMurlocKeeper The grain size of your egg shell can vary depending on how quickly you need them to be 'used' in their environment, Bigger pieces would get slower release, finer grains would release quicker. Cuttle shell would work but they seem to be quicker than egg shells.

TheMurlocKeeper I rinse eggshells to get rid of the protein layer inside it and then crush them with the end of a rolling pin to the size large gravel grains. Then I would place it in pantiehose and put it in the filter. If I were him I would float the pantyhose on top of the terrarium until the snails look normal again

I have a tip for you! Each time you do a water change, add a small amount of Seachem Trace Elements into the dechlorinated water. It'll provide the Marimo Ball Tree as well as Snails with essential minerals to allow them to flourish long-term! I hope you can read my post and try it! :)

thnaks for your videos i made a terrarium nov 2 2018 from my own backyard and added some ferns from a local park and its still going strong with minimal maintenance :) you are inspiring
giggles at the term "extra crispy" :@) love it. i am going to steal that one. thank you for the update on it.
for the calcium issue, could you use finely crushed eggshells? we wash our eggshells, put them in oven for about 10-15 minutes (to prevent any disease), them crush them with roller. they are great for our chickens. maybe you could mix some in with the sand.
My first ecosphere was underwater i made it last year it balanced out perfect with the help of the plants the shrimp and the snails i love your videos i always learn something new each time one comes out Respect man

Oh just fyi..the reason the snails are lacking calcium may be due to the moss balls..they require high level of calcium to thrive, so they kind of been feeding on your snail shells for awhile i think😅 So yeah additional calcium in the sphere would be nice at this point
ayyy, just finished maintenance on 2 of my terrariums, thanks for the vid tanner, can't wait to see the new projects
LOVE it! I plan to make a 'tree' like this for the inside of my betta tank. Brilliant idea.

short and sweet, got all the info i needed from it so hey, thank you.
Someone probably mentioned this but if you get cuttle bone (like birds use for their beaks) & stick small pieces into the sand it will assist the snails with the calcium they need to keep their shells in great shape! At least that’s one idea & I don’t wanna go through comments but wanted to mention that.. I have a ton of Marimo moss balls & would love to attempt this project if I found the right container.. the tree kind of reminds me of a bonsai... love it.. I love the pink rams horn shells with the red body & think they would make a cool color addition to your project! They are also some other colors including a beautiful light blue & of course they would not grow too big for the container..... gotta get on your IG! Love what you do.. jen

I like the comment about semantics about "true ecosystem", do what you gotta do to keep it beautiful! I've been doing reef tanks for so long and I hear so many weird comments, like " let the reef feed the fish", whatever. haha. Your moss tree is beautiful btw. enjoyed the video, I may try something similar someday soon. thanks! Todd
That is amazing. Ty
Don't feel bad about making short videos, this is perfect for an update video
For cleaning small amount of water, I use a turkey baster. :) It doesn't work on everything but it helps.
good going tanner. it reminded me that i have to take care of mine right now. cp.
Can I ask a question? Do you have to cycle a jar like this like how you would cycle a tank? It doesn't seem so, and in that case, why not? Are the snails just hardy enough to survive the cycling process, or is that only a thing in open systems?
Beautiful...the moss is pretty too.
Nice! No problem about the shorter video. Looks like you had some copepods living in there before the water change. Awesome! 😃🌿💦👍
Re the calcium for the snails - crack off tiny bits of (dried!) cuttlefish (usually sold for aviary birds) and hide the bits in the sand. They will eat it as required. I used to keep giant land snails and they loved the stuff. Big love from Scotland :)
