My grandfather was born in Albania and moved to Smyrna in 1910 at the age of 5. There were lots of stories about Greeks massacred Turks during the Greco-Turkish war. And of course, Greeks tell stories vice versa. But it always surprises me, in today's Turkey, the people who live in the west of Turkey, in Smyrna etc. are the ones who like the Greeks most, although they had the hardest time with Greeks in the Greco-Turkish war. Conservative people of Turkey accuse seculars of being "Greek" :D To summarize, 1) Balkan immigrants fought Greek. 2) Balkan immigrants like Greek. 3) Anatolian Islamists don't like both Balkan immigrants and Greeks. :)

@@kozatas It was mainly the Italian corps that tried to capitalize on an emphatic Greek expedition fearing they would lose all of their control in east med so they first started the fire in our communities. The Italians were actually hitting both Greek and Turkish targets while they were spreading rumors blaming each and other accordingly. The Greek tactical army had a great discipline (at least most of the units) until they realized they would stay outside of Ankara for a long time before any supplies would arrive due to extensive supply lines so they had to follow a scorched earth strategy while falling back. And yes some Greek units lost control and discipline but this cannot compare to what the Turks have done to Armenians, Pontic Greeks, Kurds and Ionian Greeks over the last century

My ancestors from both sides are from the Pontic Greek villages of Trabzon/Trepizond. People in my village deny that they are descendants of Pontic Greeks (mainly because of the identity issues of Pontic Greeks in the Ottoman era). I, on the other hand, embrace my lineage and the country I was born in. I am proud of being both a Turkish and a Pontic Greek person and I don't feel forced to choose between them. Elderly in my village know Pontic Greek but young ones don't know at all. The houses are all in Pontic Greek architecture but are deteriorating due to the modifications that the current owners carry out. It's sad to see an endemic culture melt due to indifference.

When Turks first arrived to Anatolia, some of them converted to Orthodox Christianity with the influence of Byzantine Empire. In population exchange between Turks and Greeks after the Greco-Turkish war was based on religion, not ethnicity;between the Turks and the Greeks, Turkey took the Muslims and Greeks took the Christians regardless of their ethnicity. My father's side is from historical Pontus, my mother from Corinth. Father's side was treated terribly after Greece lost against the disintegrating Ottoman Empire and was forced to move to Thrace; they were given land from Turks removed from Thrace during the 1923 population exchange. I've thought too about how the Turkish family must have felt, forced to move from a a place called home for 400+ years, also by no fault of their own. I dont know their story beyond what I've just mentioned, but I cant imagine they had a good time, either. From 1914-1923 the world went mad, and not for the last time, sadly. Two very remarkable cultures and peoples - remarkable highs, and degrading lows - on both sides, no question (and the reason is because both are made up of human beings of course). What sticks out to me is the fantastic and somewhat humorous (to me, anyhow!) old-world pride that both peoples for the most part still have; perhaps that is why it is one of the only mutually willing historical population exchanges to have ever occured.

Nice video! "Byzantine Empire" is a term created after the end of the realm, its citizens continued to refer to their empire simply as the Roman Empire. Also one of the main keys of fall of the Constantinople was the "Justinianic Plague" the first major outbreak of the first plague pandemic, the first Old World pandemic of plague, the contagious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The disease afflicted the entire Mediterranean Basin, Europe, and the Near East, severely affecting the Sasanian Empire and the Byzantine Empire and especially its capital, Constantinople, the height of the epidemic which killed about a fifth of the population in the imperial capital, so its was very "easy" to conquer a city without army and population

One of the aspects that bound people in a nation together is sharing a common religion. One of the few aspects of nationalism comes from religious fervor. Switzerland is predominatly Catholic (Italians, French, and probably German Catholics), though there is the probability of other religions and ideologies coexisting in the country (e.g. Lutheranism, atheism, agnosticism, etc.), but aside from that they are predominatly Catholic. The Balkans, on the other hand, is a mixture of various religious and ethinicity groups, most of which dated back from the Middle Ages. Slovienia and Croatia are Catholic. Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece are Orthodox. Albania and Bosnia have Muslim majority. With that account, there is no way, even ideologically, that people from various ethnicities and religions are meant to coexist peacefully realistically, unless they are imposed by the dominant force and will of the country's goverment regardless of the ideology (e.g. people living in the former provinces of the Ottoman Empire [which tolerated their existence provided they pay tribute and taxes to their overlords], and Yugoslavia [Tito's methods of unity and brotherhood under his regime]) Other than that, nationalist fervor will always be imminent in the Balkans when someone brings religion to the table.

Complete political nonsense from the start to the end as first they somehow claim Anatolia got hellenized peacefully while in reality Greek historians tell very different story like how entire population of Troy got slaughtered or enslaved when Greeks captured the city!! Lets assume those Greek historians were lying somehow what about thousands of paintings which can be found all around Greece showing enslaved Anatolians getting beheaded as offerings to greek gods?? They are lies as well??? Peaceful hellenization is just a total joke in every way and they even completely ignored Roman atrocities such blinding thousands of Bulgars by Basil II, other massacres of Pagans or Latin genocide done by Greeks, i guess those were irrelevant.. Then they claim Ottoman had turkification and conversion projects which is a total lie without any question due Ottoman was actually very tolerant against other Abrahamic religions such as when Christians captured Iberian peninsula they issued an order that everybody had to convert to Christianity including Jews if they wanted to stay in Spain and tens of thousands of Jews refused and migrated into Ottoman where they could live freely under Millet system which was letting minorities to even introduce their own laws!! And they were full citizens of Ottoman that their only difference to Muslims was paying slightly higher tax called Jizya tax, in fact there wasn't even a Turkish millet rather Turks were considered as a part of Muslim millet and had exactly same rights as Arabs etc which shows how ridiculous claiming Ottoman had turkification project!! And forceful recruitment aka blood tax was only taken if somebody failed to pay their taxes so rich non-Muslims like Greeks never had to enlist their children while much poorer Balkan nations like Serbians often had to enlist their children but there are even records people offered their children themselves simply because living in a poor village during medieval era was much more dangerous than becoming one of the most elite soldiers on Earth who got paid very high salaries as well!! Some westerners consider Janissaries as slavery somehow while they were getting paid very well, they could marry, retire and buy property, what a ''slavery'' indeed which literally had way more rights than ''free'' villeins who were vast majority of European population for centuries.. Then they completely ignore there were millions of Muslims living in Balkans and after Ottoman lost those places they faced every kind of atrocities, hundreds of thousands got killed and millions were forced to migrate into Ottoman!! Same happened in Crimea in 1783 and Circassia in 1860 where Muslims were completely ethnic cleansed by killings or forceful displacements to Ottoman but even if Balkan, Crimea and Circassia massacres happened decades before Anatolia it is somehow told as Ottoman started this violence for obvious reasons ofc!! But in reality those massacres were the whole reason why Ottoman nations were becoming extremely hostile against each others and the violence continued in Anatolia as well where Greeks and Armenians rebelled against Ottoman and started to attack both Ottoman forces and Turkish civilians while in return Turkish civilians attacked them and Anatolia was fallen into a total civil war which was why population exchanges happened as living together peacefully wasn't possible anymore!! Here is an academic writing published by seven western universities which is about how Greeks and Armenians killed hundreds of thousands Turkish civilians in Anatolia: www.academia.edu/35312332/Revisiting_the_Fire_of_Izmir But sadly nobody cares about the real history including even so called historians which is why there are so many nonsenses in ''history'' books that this video is one of those, what a shame...

What? You do know that the Seljuk Empire, which defeated the Romans (or Byzantines) at Manzikert, was a Turko-Persian empire. When the Oghuz Turks settled in Anatolia, they were already heavily mixed with Persians. Do not act as if Persians and Turks have historically been enemies. If anything, they mostly cooperated with eachother. From the Seljuks, to the Khwarezmian Empire, to the Timurids.

The majority of Greeks in coastal west anatolian cities were of Greek mainland origin. Apart from pontic Greeks capadocians who maybe were christian Turks, the rest in west anatolia were modern times colonists. @@sahsah6852 yeah you are right about the coastel ones and probably about western anatolians but i think they were not that much in west Anatolia. Some of the modern Greeks think that the pontics and anatolian greeks are hellenic but they are not hellenic they are kinda pure anatolian because they didnt get islamized by Turks they stand as christians and today we can see that by Dna studies they dont have any east Eurasian genes higher than 1 percent(Western Anatolian Turks have like 12-14 percent east eurasian genes which means like 35-40 percent of Turkic heritage.).Btw most of the modern populations like Turks For example most of the Greeks are average 30-35 percent ancient Hellenic or Central asian Turks like Kazakhs are average 45-50 percent Turkic in modern world every nation is mixed but the important thing is they are still carrying their culture and ancient genes.Cheers from Turkey.

Forced to become muslims and then regarded as Turks, although they are of greek origin. Coastal Turkey has actually population of greek origin. You have to take into consideration that during the Ottoman Empire the identification factor was according to religion, not language or origin. Hence, all greeks that converted to islam, were baptised automatically as "turks".

Trebizond wasn’t formed by locals. A deposed Byzantine emperor marched into it with a mercenary army and made it his realm during the collapse of the fourth crusade.
