What Happened to Nick at Nite??

Ойын-сауық

In today's video I talk about one of the most influential channels and more specifically programming block from my childhood... Nick at Nite aired classic TV shows that to this day, I love to sit down and watch to pass the time.

Nick@Nite was what introduced me to Everybody Hates Chris, Full House, and Fresh Prince, which I watched all the time. It also introduced me to Friends and That 70s Show which I only really watched here and there but nonetheless they still kept me entertained. It’s sad to see what Nick@Nite has now become. I can’t even find reruns of these shows on TV sometimes. I would love for Nick@Nite to air these shows again, but sadly I think we’re at the point of no return

@@poposterous236 I wish they would bring back all those shows in reruns being everything you guys have mentioned from the 1950s-Early 2000s. Perhaps Nick At Nite can launch a sister channel or block made specifically for all of such reruns. Then again, it turns out form what I’ve seen there are already tons of such stations that play those reruns both thru actual cable and on other cable alternatives.

I remember their older programming, which included I Love Lucy, Leave It to Beaver, My Three Sons, The Donna Reed Show, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Get Smart, The Dick van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, F Troop, Laugh-In, etc. Nick at Nite always showed old classics. I think Nick at Night is what’s missing in the world. It allowed me as a child to watch classic shows and enjoy them as I did the modern ones in the 90s. I think kids now think everything is dated if it isn’t relevant of the last 5 years. I think it’s amazing to watch shows from various generations. I know kids who won’t even watch Rugrats or All That episodes. Sad. I grew up learning to love Brady Brunch, I Love Lucy, I Dream of Jeanine, Happy Days, Threes Company and more. All of those shows made me happy even though they were shows way before my time. Bring it back!

I grew up with the early-mid '00s variation of the block. Part of what made Nick at Nite so great was that they not only celebrated classic TV shows, but also mocked them for how dated they were. That's the part of Nick at Nite I miss. I feel like that aspect of the block started to die out by the early 2000s as the shows began to become more contemporary.

I first saw Nick at Nite when I was a kid in the late 80's. Back then they had black and white shows like Green Acres, My 3 Sons, and Mr. Ed. I watched alot of Nickelodeon when I was a kid, and the impression I got was that they wanted to provide something for everyone. In the morning it was called Nick Jr. where they had shows for the toddlers, or kids under 7. Then around noon it was called Nickelodeon where they had shows for kids who were a little older. And then at 8 or 9 PM it became Nick at Nite where the shows were more for adults. It seems like they wanted to reach every age group.

It was 1986 when I first watched it. 8PM-Donna Reed Show, 8:30-Mr. Ed, 9PM-Nick At Nite Movie, 11PM-I Spy, 12AM-Route 66. 1AM-6AM was a replay of 8PM-1AM. Not long later it was 10 sitcoms from 8-1 (Make Room For Daddy, My Three Sons, Dick Van Dyke, Susie, Superman, Laugh-in, SCTV, The Monkees) By the mid 1990s, most of the shows were from the 70s (Brady Bunch, Partridge Family, Happy Days, Mary Tyler Moore, The Jeffersons). In the early 2000s it seemed they skipped from the 70s to the 90s in their programming (Full House, Fresh Prince, Family Matters). There were many good kid friendly shows in the 1980s that were never on Nick-At-Nite like Punky Brewster, Mr. Belvedere, Small Wonder, Out Of This World. They did have the Facts Of Life, Growing Pains, and Charles In Charge, but they didn't stay long. By the late 2000s, it was obvious they were ditching the classic kid friendly shows as they were airing George Lopez, Friends, & Malcolm In The Middle which weren't that old at the time.

Within 1990-91, shows like Mr. Ed and Dick Van Dyke were still staples, but Bewitched, Dragnet and F Troop all switched to color between seasons, and Get Smart switched to color after the pilot episode. The newest non-original program I remember in 1991 was Mark and Mindy, which had finished its first run just nine years earlier. It was also a spinoff of Happy Days, which Nick at Nite wouldn't air until 1996. Speaking of spinoffs, when TV Land launched in '96 it freed up space in the Nick at Nite lineup for much newer programming. For me, the moment I noticed Nick at Nite lost its way was when reruns of The Wonder Years beginning in 1997 when the series ended in 1993. Between Happy Days, The Wonder Years, Everybody Hates Chris and That '70s Show, Nick at Nite transitioned from showing programs from 20+ years ago to newer shows set 20 years earlier.

I was born on October 18, 2002 so my experience with Nick at night was at a later age more to my experience. I first started watching Nick at night when I was six I was spending the night at my old grandmother’s house. she had Nick at night on, and it was airing Malcolm in the middle, the fresh prince of Belair, and George Lopez, my personal favorite that’s basically the three shows they were airing their specific time, so naturally, I stayed up and watched Nick at night almost my entire life. I am sad that Nick at night is no longer in it’s glory form I gave up on Nick at night entirely The shows that are airing now or nothing compared to the shows of the classic era. I’m sorry to say goodbye Nick at night you were the channel I liked.😢

You were born in the year 2000 you really missed all the good times. I think to truly enjoyed Nickelodeon in its prime, you have to be born between 78 to 90. I was born in 83 and to me 1991 to 97 was peak Nickelodeon. They had a lot of live action shows, and game shows, the good burger movie was kind of their last big thing before it transitioned. After 97 it all became cartoons. In 2000 it became 24 hours SpongeBob.

I was born in December 2003 and Full House had been airing on Nick at Nite for 2 months at the time, starting syndication in October 2003. It aired regularly every year from then on until the late 2010s where it only started airing occasionally. And then on September 28th, 2021 it aired for the final time. A piece of my childhood died that night. 18 years of syndication is pretty incredible. I would also watch Home Improvement, The Nanny, Everybody Hates Chris, and Glenn Martin DDS. I would sometimes stay up until midnight on weekends watching those with my mom at a young age when I couldn't sleep. Another classic I grew up with, George Lopez had 13 years under it's belt on Nick at Nite from 2007 to 2020, and now the longest running syndicated show that's still airing is Friends, which started airing in 2011. 12 years so far. I would discover The fresh prince of Bel-Air air in the mid 2010s, but then it stopped airing around 2018. It's so sad man. 😞💔

I’m on the older end. Just turned 50 this month. I was a teen in the 80s when Nick @ Nite was in its infancy. I was intrigued by all those old black & white shows. I encourage you to watch them. Of most of them I’d really only seen I Love Lucy & the Dick Van Dyke Show before. Before Nick @ Night, I’d only ever seen the color reruns of My Three Sons, and never knew about the older brother, Mike, OR their grandfather, Bub. My favorite of all of these shows is The Donna Reed Show. It was not like the other family shows of its era. That family was a little more progressive for the times, I think (esp w/ some themes and conversations). And one of my other favorite shows ended up being Private Secretary/The Ann Sothern Show, which I had to either stay up late to watch or tape on the VCR (once we finally got one).

Children's shows in the morning, kids in the afternoon, adults in the evening and night. It was like the human aging cycle within a day, with shows planned for the entire family. It was brilliant. And the shows on Nick at Nite, at its best, were timeless. I was a middle schooler in the mid 90s but I eagerly tuned into shows like I Love Lucy, F Troop, and Get Smart and others. I was definitely not watching when it got "The Nanny" and shows like Fresh Prince and Full House were still in fresh syndication.

I say this as a 90s kid born mid-80s. Then again, I was a weird kid. Maybe they could put old 90's Nick shows into the block (Cartoon Network is doing it with Adult Swim's Checkered Past block of programming) as it would might fit the oldies theme (it does about as much as Friends or The Office), it could get people nostalgic for those classics back on Nick, and it would make it stand out from it's competitors MeTV, Antenna TV and TV Land (not saying the entire schedule should be that btw but I think it's an idea that could give it variety and attention)

Great video, really brings back some fond memories. It's nice to hear that someone as young as you was captivated by those older sitcoms. I grew up watching Nick at Nite in the '90s. It was a big part of my childhood and teen years, the default go-to channel at night. I Love Lucy, Three's Company, All in the Family, The Brady Bunch, Happy Days, The Jeffersons, Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched, The Wonder Years, Diff'rent Strokes, Laverne and Shirley, The Facts of Life, the list goes on and on. Some of those shows may have actually been on TV Land, but close enough. Those classic sitcoms are some of the best shows ever made and taught me so much. They're more than likely why I still to this day prefer watching old shows and movies. It's sad to see the recent state of the channel. I haven't watched it in probably a decade or longer, and last I remember they were seemingly always playing George Lopez. Even at that time it felt like Nick at Nite was essentially done; a far cry from what it once was.

Ok. Maybe I feel a little old being born in 1987, but I watched Nick at Nite in the 90's, and I was introduced to I Love Lucy then. It's easily one of the greatest tv shows of all time, and if it wasn't for Nick at Nite, I would've never appreciated that show in the mid-90's. My grandma, who was born in 1923, would watch it with me and talked about how much she enjoyed that show back in the day. So, in one way, the block capitalized on revitalizing classic shows for new audiences. But yeah, streaming killed that. But from what you describe, Nick at Nite, from what I knew it as, quickly changed to more recent years of television versus black and white shows.

  • @mattmc5069

I first watched nick at nite in the late 1980s. Then It was all 1950s-1960s shows. I didn't watch that much then but definitely enjoyed "I love Lucy". The theory behind the block was brilliant. They needed night time programing but that was a time kids where not up. This stumped Nick for a solution. They recently aired "lassie" reruns and then began to get letters from parents thanking them for introducing their kids to something they grew up with. Now they had their answer: Nick was for kids but adults paid the cable bill. Reruns had a bad rep but Nick at Nite always advertised it's reruns as classic tv. As "essential" tv for kids and families: baby boomers kids. They also used 35 mm master prints and even form the negatives if possible and transfered to 2 inch tape. Other reruns in the 80s used cheap dirty 16 mm prints. So that would be like a respected streamer today airing "classic tv" and airing pokemon and Rugrats in 4k quality. 90s early 2000s kids would subscribe in a minute and be delighted.

Nick at Night when I was a kid was Mr. Edd, Superman and I think they had the 60s batman on as their transitional programming (8 PM slot). I do remember when I got older as an adult and still had cable they spammed Wings and Cheers. Which I watched a lot cheers is still one of my all time favorite sitcoms and wings was always a guilty pleasure. They always seem to struggle to figure out what they can license and afford for a somewhat niche audience for a paid cable channel. There's free channels that play old TV shows too so they have to offer a bit more value but they don't bring in the revenue probably to justify the rights fees

I'd also like to say that I loved the fact that nickelodeon's night time block was just full of nice family sitcoms while cartoon networks nighttime block, adult swim, had shows that were specifically targeted at adults and were way more vulgar and dirty than nick@nites shows.

I first got introduced to this channel back in 2009-2011 when they used to air shows like Everybody Hate's Chris, Full House, George Lopez, Family Matters and other classic shows. However, the block began to die for me since like 2016 when not only the branding got more generic, but the line up of shows is rapidly declining. It's much worse these days as Friends is the only thing that airs on the Nick @ Nite time slot along with a couple SpongeBob episodes they may air occasionally since 2018 or 2019, and random movies. Nickelodeon as a whole is just a dry deserted place that lacks variety in programming when it comes to having other shows. The only thing they have going for is the new splat logo, which imo is unique, but that doesn't mean Nickelodeon is suddenly back the 90s and 2000s. Personally I didn't mind the 2009 logo that much, but the splat will always be more iconic.

They had other shows I can't even remember because most of them were so boring to me. But I Love Lucy...that was the best. Lucy was basically a cartoon character, lol. Stuff like Fresh Prince, Rosanne, Full House...new episodes were coming out in the 90's, so it was weird seeing them in the 2000's. Only a 10 year gap? In the 90's the "newest" shows were from the 70's.

No kidding! I was born in the very late 1970s, so those older shows for me were also from the 50s and 60s.

Not even just Nick's schedules... any network run by Viacom is absolutely stale... almost like nothing changed in 10 years. MTV, Comedy Central, CMT, BET and all their subsidiary channels are all basically where they were at a decade ago... and if not, they're worse for ware.

Eddie good video idea well done speaking on this topic and giving us some history about it. I'm 39 during 1990 my parents first got cable tv and that's when I first found out about Nick at night. I watched Nick at night from 1990 till around 2000 during those years the channel would air shows from the 1950s though the late 70s. And back when tv Land first showed up I loved that channel too. I thank Nick at night for introducing me to classic TV from the past. I'm a streaming person myself and thanks to channels like Tubi tv and Pluto tv I can find lots of the shows I use to watch back in the day on them. I also like how basic tv has what I call the throwback channels Metv antenna tv Get tv Etc That also air the old school shows.

My solution: cease all TV during Nick at nite and just play reruns of old SpongeBob. Of course I'm only being half serious because the other half of me would absolutely fall for that.

Even though you weren't around for the original Nick at Nite years, I wasn't around for the Civil War, but I have read a book about it and can speak on it. This video is missing out on the "true" glory years of Nick at Nite. I remember staying up late to watch Taxi. Get Smart, Dragnet, and so many others on Nick at Nite. Nick at Nite is always going to reflect the shows from 10-15 years or so prior that resonate with the key 18-49 demo that grew up with these shows or first saw then as young adults with its legacy programing.

Nick At Night was at its best in the 2000s and early 2010s, stop the BS and fxck boy games. Those were the years when they showed actual good sitcoms from the 90s and early 2000s like Fresh Prince, Malcolm In The Middle, The Nanny, Family Matters, George Lopez Show etc. Live with it or go to the retirement home gramps 👴🏻

When you're old enough now that literally none of the shows you watched as a kid for that 2 hour block from 8pm to 10pm are not mentioned at all and you remember when TV Land actually became a thing. I guess that's where they put my Nick @ Nite shows. Every night it would be The Munsters, I Dream of Jeannie, I Love Lucy and then Bewitched. Shows to this day I still adore. Heck, know each episode of them all these years later. "Nick @ Night. All night, every night."

I grew up with the 2008-2014 Nick Era, and at that time, Nick At Nite was mostly airing 80s & 90s shows like Full House. I remember watching Nickelodeon most of the time throughout Kindergarden-4th grade. And I was into the Nicktoons & the Sitcoms that Nickelodeon made, so I was confused as to why there’s this random show about a family who lives in San Francisco doing average things. Of course, I would eventually become a fan of Full House through the Nick At Nite programming block, but when I was a kid, it was new seeing an old show getting reruns. In fact, that’s probably when I discovered what the word Reruns means.

Nick @ Night was such a game changer for me. I always loved television, but that where I was introduced to classic sitcoms that defined generations, and I loved them all. My favorite was The Nanny, which I thought was HILARIOUS! Nick @ Night and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network were honestly genius

Full House was my favorite Late-night show on Nick@Nite since I first started watching it from 2016, until August of 2021. Even though they kept doing reruns of the same shows from the first season to the last, I still enjoyed every moment of it. Plus, it was hard for me to catch the episodes when they started airing in the early morning hours by late 2020, but I still managed to catch them. If I recall correctly, the last episode of Full House to air on Nick@Nite was the episode where Danny Tanner turned 30. I miss the memories.

Well now we have a bunch of retro TV stations for free on broadcast like MeTV, Cozi TV, Antenna TV, Rewind TV, Catchy Comedy, Laff TV, and etc. which have a lot of throwback comedies from the past. It just feels like cable overall was amazing back in the 90s and 2000s.
