Glad you are enjoying the car. Thanks for the comment. I am seriously bummed that the Audi didn't work out for me. It was my first German car, and I had real high hopes. I loved it when it worked, and when it was not sitting at the dealership for weeks at a time. I still miss the car overall. Maybe someday I will get into another Audi and hopefully not have the same bad luck. Cheers!

Another B9 s4 owner in UK was explaining a similar clunking sound to yours, the dealer there found it to be a steering component issue. Dealer ended up buying the car back after the faulty component was replaced and the car still had the steering noise.

That is a shame on the issues. At least Audi did the right thing and bought it back. I honestly thought mine would be a steering rack issue. After checking everything else. However Audi/Tech's were never able to identify and fully fix the issue.

45K miles on my B9 A4 (2017) and have had two issues both being the SOS light. First time dealer took it in and had it for three weeks. Came back out and maybe 200 miles later it came back, I waited about 10k miles and a year to bring it in just due to inconvience and second time they fixed it in a few hours and good as new. I drive my car hard and do have a JB4 my only complaint really is shitty rotors I blew through my first set at 35k miles.

I just picked up a 2018 black optic with S package and other things with 26k miles on it, it’s super quiet with no issues. I had a Shelby that needed a new engine after 6k miles, with other issues too. For your car they should have put it on the lift with a person in the car, and stood right under it and see if they could find the knock. And literally reached in and grab each suspension component then shake it. Your sound seems to be the spring coils binding in the shock assembly, possibly not seated properly and/or not in the right position. Or just assembled wrong,

I agree, i've had many cars and a few of which had issues that needed addressing. This was just a nuisance as the car was at the dealer for weeks at a time, and I don't believe they attempted to actually resolve it while it was there. I am not mad at Audi. They definitely came through and did the right thing, as seen in my next discussion video. Glad your car is doing well. Overall it is an amazing car and I am sad to see it go. But it was just not being driven due to the issues.

looks like to me the front upper control arm which was probably not torqued correctly and probably not while it was under load (as it should). (bad mechanic) is my guess. If you are on a parking lot, open your hood , pop the plastic covers over your struts, you should see the control arms, have someone turn the wheel, you should see it pop somewhat. and localize the sound.

  • @NEMotoGuy

I actually checked on this when I still had the vehicle before I took it in to the dealership. Couldn't spot any abnormalities. The dealership replaced the entire front control arm assembly, including all the bushings and that did absolutely nothing to cure the problem. They replaced some more components as, with no luck. Audi purchased the car back from me as a lemon in early January, so I no longer have the car. Thank you for the feedback and advice, hopefully someone figures out what the problem was in my car. The problems aside, I really do miss the car a lot.

That is insane, a brand new S4 with significant issues right off the bat. Generally speaking, Audi cars rarely have bad ratings, the S4 has always been top tier. This is just plain bad luck to have a lemon S4. I know the dealership bought the car back from you, I really hope they don’t try to sell this particular one back to anybody. Car should be sent back to the manufacturer so they can do a thorough inspection on where they went wrong in manufacturing this car.

Is the noise speed dependent? It seems like it clicks every time you go lock to lock on the wheel. If that is the case you should have them check the steering column. Only so much you can tell from the video. More details, may be able to provide more troubleshooting tips.

The clunking occurs when accelerating from a stop, coming to a stop, turning either direction while in motion, turning either direction when at a stop. Make sure you watch them check your car out, when I had my C63, Mercedes would say they "Checked it out" but in reality, they didn't even take the car into get looked at, I wouldn't be surprised if Audi does the same, let your car sit in the parking lot for 2 days then call you "Looks good man!!" even though they never even touched the car. By the sounds of your video, they are doing that. My C63 had a blown ignition and wouldn't even start, so I had it towed in, the car sat for a week, then Mercedes calls me telling me the cars "fixed" I go in, and the Ignition wasn't even replaced, the car still wouldn't start. German car companies are kind of a joke when it comes to customer service, they are fun cars to drive but their customer service is utter garbage in my experiences. You would think when you drop 60k++ on a car they would at least have the common courtesy to be honest with you.

Audi ended up buying the car back as a lemon, so everything “worked out” I guess. Miss the car though...maybe after my new A90 Supra I will get an RS6 when they get to the US or an R8 😎😬

Glad I moved away from German vehicles, every german vehicle that I've had (all audi's of various models and years) had nothing but issues. They're high maintenance vehicles. They're awsome when they work but when shit hits the fan, it's a huge headache. Picked up a 2017 Lexus IS350 and that vehicle is awesome and bulletproof so far. If german vehicles were more reliable I would love to stay with my audi's specifically, always been an audi lover since day 1 but idk anymore the problems ran me away from them.

@@rrrambunctious4070 I actually came from a long line of WRX/STI as well. I traded in my 2017 STI that was modded for the 18 S4. Its a completely different animal over these JDM AWD cars. Driving the S4 feels a bit more relaxed/loose compared to the STI or even the C43 AMG coupe IMO. It can firm up with the dynamic sport mode, but I would not consider stock suspension as a hard canyon carver. The luxury/comfort quality in the S4 was IMO so much better than the C43 or BMW. The virtual cockpit is awesome, and the seats and interior feel/look are incredibly luxurious. Power is much more usable in daily conditions for the S4. I think the M340I handled a bit better and felt a bit quicker than the S4. I think the fit and finish over between the BMW/Benz is better in the Audi IMO. If I didn't get unlucky with the lemon S4 I would have loved to keep it. I truly enjoyed driving and just sitting in the cabin of the S4. Generally more quiet and less rattles in the Audi compared to the BMW. Again these are my personal experiences. I have a buddy that swears by BMW.

A week!!? What the heck. What's the point of owning a car, if it just stays in the shop? Just stick with Lexus, Acura, Toyota, Honda. Not sure if state specific, but you have 24 hours to bring the car back, if not satisfied with the work. Also, don't accept the car back, unless they fixed it. You should have recorded all this crap. sounds like they had the car over 1 mo nth easy. This is ridiculous. Also, Audi and VW dealers can call in an engineer to come and look at the vehicle to diagnose it. It sounds almost like the sway bar link.

Yea, this was a terrible first experience with a car brand unfortunately. In the less than one year I had the car it went to the dealership at least 7/8 times for the same issue. I swear I was in a loaner vehicle longer than in the S4. To the point where they said they were calling in an expert tech from Audi HQ to fly over and inspect the vehicle. AND they still could figure out the issue, which doesn't make any sense to me. It was just a poor dealership experience IMO. I ended up getting a lawyer and filing the car as a lemon and ended up returning the car back to Audi. It's a shame, but I have so many friends that have owned and still own and swear by Audi. I am hoping to jump into one again in the future, but we'll see. For now I am enjoying the new chapter with Toyota/BMW in my Supra. It's been a fantastic three years with this car.

Basically you don't want to share more information about yourself. I'm a software engineer myself and you have no idea how easy it is to get people information online these days and sell the data to other companies for advertisements. You are wondering why you are getting special offers from your local Toyota, maybe this is why. This is exactly what Google/Facebook are doing, selling your data. You just don't know how they do it. and this is how. I don't know maybe I'm just too paranoid about the topic of privacy. it was just a friendly suggestion. you know what..
