Stevie Knicks had problem too but hers was from extreme cocaine abuse and so was Elton John. Remember he actually had surgery to try and recover his voice, and it changed it, he never was 100% again, he just adapted to what he had left vocally, he did this well but not to like was originally. .

Another singer from an older generation, Julie Andrews, who was known for her beautiful voice, had surgery in 1997 to have a cyst removed from her vocal chords and lost her singing voice permanently as a result of the surgery! I can't imagine what it was like for her. I've read it was devastating for her and made her extremely depressed.

And yeah, she worked the shit outta that, I mean, I can't imagine Total Eclipse of the Heart without that rasp, or Holding Out For a Hero. I mean, no one else could sing those songs other than her with that voice

From what I’ve read there really isn’t a cure for Reinke’s Edema. I’ve had surgery, and she (my physician) said I had an old hemorrhage in one vocal fold, and another about to burst omen the other side. She diagnosed me with suffering from Reinke’s Edema. I lost my voice for 2 months about 20 years ago, but they never gave me an explanation. Looking back I believe that is when that old hemorrhage occurred. Any way, my local cover band singing days are over-unfortunately.

@@Krae75 smoking, vocal misuse, and poor vocal hygiene (i.e. not staying hydrated, consuming lots of alcohol, smoking, etc) are often the causes of Reinke’s edema! Reinke’s edema is most commonly associated with smoking, so it is highly likely that smoking has brought on this diagnosis for her.

taking in mind all that is said, in all honesty, you can't compare a teenager's voice to a grown-up one, she was a baby in HM, her sound is more mature now and she's definitely the absolute best there is.

I was thinking I need to hear her singing the same song to even determine how much it changed. And even from one night to a next a singer's voice can sound a little different because of the strain being put on the vocal chords. But simply growing causes a change. It is more apparent in males, but us females have it happen too.

She was an adult in 2013. She turned 18 in 2010. Her voice changed an unnatural amount between then and now. My voice may sound a little different than when I was a teenager but it more or less sounds exactly the same as when I was 18-21. Miley’s voice changing this much is definitely not just aging…

This is perhaps the most compassionate video I've ever watched about someone's voice changing over time. Such gentle compassion, clear and concise explanation, and encouragement at the end. Wonderful as always. :)

Well to be fair Courtney Love wasn't out here charting the charts at age 13 with a duo persona. Going on 3 tours before the age of 15 and not only starring in her own tv series but also doing films. Miley was literally working as two people at once. Some child labor laws were definitely broken there lmfao

There's a reason Broadway performers have a "conservation voice" - _conservation,_ not conversation! They always ensure to speak minimally and very softly when doing 8 shows a week. Even though Miley may not sing 8 shows a week (more like 5 or 6), being careful and avoiding talking where possible is definitely a good idea. Oh, and NEVER dress-rehearse with full voice! Only use full voice during VOCAL rehearsal in a controlled environment with your vocal coach present! Hope this helps any aspiring performers out there!

Miley 2013 was unstoppable. She could out sing anyone. She was literally belting f5s and G5’s with ease yet being a mezzo soprano. I also love Miley’s ability to do rock growls. She’s definitely got a one of a kind voice.

@@j800r_aswell males that sing 5 octave notes tend to have very constricted voices with very poor resonance and are only squeezing to get there. They end up having those high notes by sacrificing vocal healthy, power, depth of tone, low notes and middle notes, and they sacrifice longevity too.

This was a great break down of why Miley is legit. She wears her heart on her sleeve and her soul in her vocals. This was extremely interesting! Thank you!

It's so important to rest your vocal chords. I love singing, and recently, I sang every day for over a week. My style improved and I hit a note I'd struggled to reach. But I could also feel it in my vocal chords. It wasn't pain exactly, more like mild irritation. And I actually had to stop listening to music for a while, because whenever I listen to music, I feel like I have to sing along, because if I don't, I feel like I'll combust. I feel awful that Miley didn't have days off. She sounds amazing, but at what cost? I hope her voice doesn't get any more serious damage. She said in her interview that she's taking care of it properly now, so I hope it works!

Miley has a very classic-rock-country-blues kind of voice, and I've always loved it.

Love this style of in-depth coverage. It's almost like a TED Talk. Opera singers typically go on for longer than 'pop' or 'rock' singers with no such radical changes. That is because they train properly and are thus able to protect and project their voices in a much more controlled way that is well within their true vocal range.

Are those specifically Scottish? Mine are a weird pale blue that's more grey-green, not like anyone else in my family, and now I'm wondering what colour my maternal grandmother (a Ross who grew up speaking Gaelic in Cape Breton) had. The only other person I ever met with the same was a Duncan (transported from Scotland for horse thieving!). I loved her very much but the real bonus was in the apocalypse we would never be short of rides!

Miley’s voice changed a lot between the seasons of Hannah Montana too. Like compare the song This Is The Life to I’ll Always Remember You. I doubt the change is fully because of maturity. First her voice sounded more congested, then it sounded raspier, now it’s just fully deep and raspy. I wonder what her voice would sound like if she hadn’t smoked at all

shes always been a mezzo... you can tell even when she was singing higher songs and during her time as a disney star she was still so young and the songs she was singing were very youthful so even though she was always a mezzo, the music shes singing now (country rock) allows her to embrace her mezzo sound a bit more

I admire Miley's honesty about this, however I really LOVE her new sound.

She's got so much talent! I love the way her voice sounds ❤️

She's become a lot more interesting both as a singer and a person to me. she's probably always been an interesting person but we're getting to see the real Miley these days and she's always cool to listen to.

Smoking, drugs, and alcohol? What used to be the life of a rockstar.

The way contemporary music is produced is an additional factor that contributes to people overstraining their voice. Bad technique can be ‚fixed‘ in post production to some extend and so companies have reduced or entirely stopped spending money on training and coaching their talent to actually learn good technique in the first place. Also a lot of music is so heavily compressed and ‚loud‘ that it gives listeners and especially people interested in singing a completely wrong impression of how singing works. If you Listen to vocalists today, especially young aspiring singers or talent show candidates, you can actually hear how hard they push their voices and how much strain they put on their vocal cords because many of them never had any sort of professional vocal coaching and they also picked up a lot of really unhealthy and bad habits from listening to music on the radio or on Spotify. When I started taking professional lessons twenty years ago I had to unlearn a whole lot of very bad habits I picked up from listening to music on TV and radio. music that even at the time was already often overproduced and over compressed and sung by people who also didn’t really have great technique to begin with. Things have only gotten worse over the last twenty years and so aspiring vocalists today tend to pick up even worse habits than I did.

Something i've gathered from a lot of pub singers & amateur bands etc is that they fall for the illusion that louder = better when it's not always true, that's what the microphone is for, it's the sound engineer's job to get the mix right. I've seen loads of inexperienced singers that have no musical ear for how their band sounds as a whole so gradually through the night they start getting louder and louder until it just sounds awful. This goes for any musician standing on a stage. A good musician listens to the whole band, bad musicians only listen to themselves.

"i didn't get recovery days there that was not important for someone that was making so much capital for such a big corporation". As an industry, the music business has an extremely poor track record of ensuring the well-being of its people (just look at how many artist end up dead or wrecked for life). It is e.g. well documented that taking people out of their environment and hauling them on tour around the world is severely stressful for their physical, mental and social health. Then you add in shenigans like Michael Jackson accidentally getting half his head burned off and you have a profession that looks more like a death trap than something people make a living of. I mean, most industries have managed to establish effective safeguards against the specific dangers of that industry except the music (and film) industry where such consideration seem to either not exist or, at best, seem pretty ineffective. There is College Humor's 'Construction Workers React to "Wrecking Ball"' which is meant humourous but it seems to contain an awful amount of truth each time I hear stories like that from the music industry.

that conclusion, though!! the world need you as you are. there's already a "like them", in the person of "them". it needs YOU like YOU are! when it wants you to change, you will. (that's a thing one of my coaches told me)

miley has a very unique and an amazingly stable voice and her techniques are absolutely chef's kiss

I remember when she was playing hanna montana there was an episode that aired about her vocal cords and it was pretty serious and I think it was this very condition and I do remember her in the episode completely freaking out about it and sad.

I have a paralyzed vocal cord from a thyroidectomy I had in 2013. I was actually moved to tears by this. Thank you!

Her voice is fucking incredible now. And although it much raspier, it still so powerful and controlled live.

I compare her changes (both in both vocal quality and choice of material), to those that Marianne Faithful went through. And is both cases, _as a listener,_ I prefer the later version. Oh, and--I think I've already said this, but it bears repeating: I love the expansion beyond just reactions, and especially the science-y direction you've chosen. Love the channel even more as time goes on.

It could, but seems like derm procedures and skincare can work really well in countering that damage since all of that has improved quite a lot even compared to 10 years ago.

Kudos to you for giving a clear and detailed explanation of Miley´s voice and concerns. I am 71 and never paid much attention to her, thought she was “too much” and wild. However, her song Flowers made me look at her in a different way and reading about her gave me a new understanding her career. She is devoted to her career and is now healthier than she has ever been. Consequently she is even looking prettier. As far as her voice, I Love It! Hopefully she is kind to herself and has learned to say HELL NO when being pushed around to make money from her voice.

I think she has matured since 2013... she isn't 21 year old party girl anymore, she's 31 year old divorced woman... and yes heartbreak from her divorce changed her and you can see it through those songs Flowers and Slide Away... she has stated in a couple songs that she isn't young or 17 anymore so she could be done with her "wild" era. When she was teen star in Hanna Montana she couldn't really do any of that wild stuff because she was underage back then and famous... so she musta had a late puberty in early 20s. I didn't really like her in the beginning but her last few ballads are really good. She definitely imitates Madonna like many other young popstars.

I'm going through this right now; trying to rescue the voice I had before the damage appeared. Fixing it is a long, hard road; requiring surgery, months of rest & vocal re-training. *It may still not recover* or may be permanently altered as in Miley's case. If you really value your voice *take care of it* just like any other part of your body 🙏

I have been watching Ms. Roars for over a year now and i just absolutely love the channel. Ive learned so much by just watching. Im always excited to see a new video.

As someone who has some minor vocal damage from improperly learning to scream (I have since learned the right way) the idea of vocal surgery is terrifying. I personally can't recommend it as so many people have problems afterwards or not even being able to sing anymore at all. Personally I would always suggest learning to work around it unless surgery is necessary for health reasons. I'm happier with my voice now than I have ever been, damage and all
