I love this movie. I remember renting it from the video store around 93 and watching it with a couple of friends for a sleepover. I was probably 14 years old. The scene with the kid beating the crap out of Kiefer Sutherland was very creepy.

Indeed, the 90s was full of gems. More hidden gems than the overt gems of the 80s, but that is what makes the 90s fun, is seeking them hidden gems out.

I absolutely love this movie. In my opinion, it's not only one of the best Schumacher films, but one of the most iconic horror films of all time. It was an exemplary specimen of the Schumacher horror paradigm - the modern tone, innovative story, and impeccable cast. What I would give to get one more horror film from him.

The visuals and soundtrack also add to how beautiful as well as ominous the film is. Props to Schumacher, the ending made me teary eyed the first time I saw it in the 90s, I was a kid back then! Good times.

I really like Flatliners! It's a fun film that's well made & has a good cast. Kind of a "thriller" movie that feels like (and is) a nice time capsule of 1990.

Do not blame the screenwriter or his screenplay for Flatliners. I read the original script in 1989 and it was BRILLIANT. Great story, fantastic ending. I couldn't wait to see it. Then the movie came out the following year...and halfway through...I didn't know what I was seeing. I was told that Joel Schumacher, an atheist, removed all references to God and a positive afterlife, which destroyed the hopeful and exciting ending. Gone. After Pretty Woman came out before Flatliners, Julia Roberts' people told the production that the script had to be rewritten because "Julia can't do anything wrong." And that's the story. Everyone has done something wrong and it comes back after them. Nope, not America's newest sweetheart. Completely wreck the story to make her look good. So no one has ever seen just how great Flatliners really was. The ending as it is makes ZERO sense. Why would Keifer Sutherland "kill" himself using their medical procedure unless he knew someone was coming to revive him (he didn't). They should've used the original script on the remake and it might have gone somewhere...but Hollywood can't even do any better with a second chance.

I'm interested in looking up the original script. I am a fan of the OG film. I did like the ending shot of the film, the painting of God pointing, as if a warning to not mess with natural law and to play "god" with life or death in the way the medical students were. So I am interested to see what was changed/removed and compare the two scripts. Thanks for bringing attention to that. Dont care for remakes or reboots. Only the 80s could pull off good remakes.

@@ItsaKindOfMagic86 Julia's character's original story was that she falsely accused a college professor for sexual harassment to avoid getting one bad grade, which drove the professor to suicide. It's his ghost, with a bullet hole in the head, that haunts her until she jumps out of a window and kills herself. Keifer's character goes under to confront his tormentor (since he was dead) and he sees Julia in the tunnel of life. With the help of another man, they pull themselves out of death. Keifer is revived and they race down to the morgue to find Julia out of her drawer, wrapped in a sheet, and crying in a corner. The man who helped them in the tunnel was Kevin Bacon's religious father (revealed afterword). Kevin Bacon ends the film by thanking God for what happened.

One of my favorite thrillers. I love so much the gorgeous cinematography in Flatliners. Beautiful soundtrack as well. I had hoped that Joel Schumacher would have done his Batman movies in the same tone and style as it and as The Lost Boys, and not overly use the glowing Graffiti aesthetics and camp but I found out that studio interference had some blame to do with that, not all his fault. Hard pass on the remake 🙄 giant resounding *no thanks* to that mess.

It's a missed opportunity to me. Striking visuals and spectacular cast. Excellent idea for a movie. And in the end, nothing really came of it. Everyone lives, there are no consequences to playing God and trying to cheat death. Odd shit happens and that's about it.

  • @ItsaKindOfMagic86

I thought it served a good warning. It didnt have to have a gloomy nihilistic ending. The painting of God pointing at the end before the credits roll I think summed it up to say that life and death isnt something to be toyed with, and not to play "god". That is what I got from it when I watched it as a kid back in the 90s. I thought it was beautifully shot. It could have done well as a mini series if the want for more fleshing out of the characters, but that is the trouble when you have a cast of about 5 people, not all scripts can flesh them all out in the running time if the film is a one off (no sequels). they gave their backstory in the form of their past 'sins' and how they approach/deal with it. Keeping it simple is not all bad.
