What Happened to Disney 3D Rereleases? - Before the Live Action Remakes

Ойын-сауық

If there's one thing Disney is good at, it's creating trends. Disney focuses on remaking animated classics into live action these days, but a few years ago, they were settling on just rereleasing those same movies instead... in 3D of course!
3D as a gimmick was a big hit at the start of the decade, and Disney capitalized by releasing the Lion King 3D in 2011. How did it do, and what caused the end of this trend?

I went to see Jurassic Park in 3D purely due to it being an opportunity to see the film in the cinema as I'd been too young as a kid. I think they, as you say, maybe put too much emphasis on the 3D being the big draw.

I neglected to mention JP here, but it was definitely a moderate success. It seemed one of the best fits for 3D though!

@@SuperMakki My experience with it was that I didn't really feel it added that much but neither did it take away from it by converting to 3D? Several shots were really impressive such as when the velociraptor lifts its head from under the plastic wrap or when the girl/stunt woman gets pulled up through the vent. Although a lot of the shots have wispy fine hair detail and I noticed that the hair detail had generally been left on the background layer a lot as it was obviously really hard to cut it out during the process. I really wish i'd seen Titanic or Terminator 2 in 3D when I had the chance, again mostly to see them on the big screen.

Yeah unfortunately the ship seems to have sailed, your best bet would be 3D Blu-rays? I doubt they're the same experience though, and no one really has 3D TV anymore. James Cameron's movies were the best converted to 3D imo, he really does have a passion for that technology

@@SuperMakki Projectors still support 3D though not all. Research needs to be done. It’s an option and even more so with the Ultra short throws these days.

I want The Little Mermaid 3D rerelease AND the Aladdin IMAX rerelease to ACTUALLY be brought back into production and ACTUALLY released into theaters in order to regain the success those very 3D and IMAX rereleases ACTUALLY deserve!

The 3D rerelease trend was better than the remake trend.

3d has come in and out of popularity for over 70 years now. It has always been a short term fad and never lasts. Want proof? Go to any electronics store and ask for a 3D TV set. They have not made any in years, because once the fad wore off nobody wanted them.
