What Happened To China's Fake European Towns? I Was Shocked! 🇨🇳🇫🇷🇬🇧 (

If you travel into the suburbs of Hangzhou, you'll be greeted by a curious sight: a full-length replica of the Eiffel Tower, along with a knockoff Champs-Élysées from Paris to go along with it. There's nowhere else in the world that you could've found someone with enough money and a lack of common sense to build such a thing. Only in China, and I'm grateful for their strange decision.
In fact, there's not just a fake Eiffel Tower, there's also a fake England, Germany, and apparently even Wyoming. These unique property developments were all over the country, and I thought I'd go and check them out, starting with a fake London on the outskirts of Shanghai.

I went to Hallstatt, Austria earlier this year and learned that they're suffering from overtourism because of the Hallstatt replica in China. People visit the fake Hallstatt and then decide they want to travel to Europe to see the real thing. They had to limit the number of tour buses allowed in on any given day because overtourism was becoming such a problem (lucky for me I picked a pretty quiet day to go and was able to enjoy the town without fighting crowds)

In Hallstatt they have over 1700 visitors per inhabitant per year. In Venice i think they have around 30 or something. It's not just China though, it's also Korea, Japan, Arabic countries and a bit from everywhere. It will be restricted in the future, they are planning something just at the moment.

Sabbatical was asked a few times by older women if he was married. It's quite common that the older generation in China cares about if a person around 30 is married and suggests him/her to marry and have children, but I didn't expect them to ask an American tourist this question😂. They generally think a person should get married and start a family by around 30. The younger generation generally cares little about if a person is married or not. There are a lot difference between older and younger generations.

Yes it was a difficult country but in the end the people were so incredibly welcoming and warm. I miss it.

For anyone confused by the flickering lights: Cameras made in America/lighting in America operates at a standard of 60Hz (this can be changed in-camera, of course), but China uses a 220V 50Hz system. As a result, the strobing of the lights at 50Hz causes aliasing due to the desync with his cameras 60Hz frequency (NTSC). It can be fixed by switching to the proper frequency for the lighting environment you find yourself in (In this case, Tommy should switch to PAL 50Hz).

Background of the confusing love story Tommy mentioned on the broken bridge: By the banks of West Lake, two serpents who had cultivated into human forms, Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing, rose from the lake's depths to explore the human world. They encountered the scholar Xu Xian on the Broken Bridge during a sudden downpour, and he kindly offered them shelter under his umbrella. This chance meeting forged a deep friendship among the three. Over time, Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian's affection for each other grew stronger, leading them to marry and open a pharmacy. Known for their kindness and medical skills, Bai Suzhen earned the beloved title of "Lady White." However, their happiness attracted the jealousy and interference of Fahai, a monk from Jinshan Temple. Fahai revealed Bai Suzhen's true identity, attempting to separate the couple. Bai Suzhen fought fiercely against Fahai to rescue Xu Xian, who had been imprisoned by the monk. Despite being pregnant, she bravely confronted Fahai. Ultimately, her powers were not enough, and Fahai imprisoned her under Leifeng Pagoda, tragically separating the loving couple.

I love Hangzhou. I dont remember whether there was a high speed train from shanghai in my time. I always used to fly down. Last time I was there was shortly after they finished the Hongqiao airport. They rebuilt that airport - from being like a giant stalinist public toilet to brand new what it is today - in about 10 months. I once had about 40 factory workers line up for a photo with me next to the lake one night. My mandarin was really bad back then so I have no idea why. ps technically, Hangzhou was the capital of the southern song.
